Each new generation of bodyarmor is designed to offer increased protection and comfort to theSoldier by stopping or slowing bullets and fragments and reducingthe number and severity of wounds.IBA is the model name for modular, multiple-threat body armor, consisting of the Outer Tactical Vest (OTV), Small Arms ProtectiveInsert/Enhanced SAPI (SAPI)/(ESAPI), Deltoid and AxillaryProtector (DAP), and the Enhanced Side Ballistic Insert (ESBI).Eight sizes of OTV and five sizes of front and back ergonomicallydesigned SAPI/ESAPI ballistic plates are being fielded. The basicsystem weight (OTV and SAPI) is 15.7 pounds(size medium), which is 9 pounds lighterthan the PASGT/ISAPO combination. TheOTV, without plates, weighs 7.7 pounds(size medium) and protects against fragmentationand 9mm rounds. The SAPI/ESAPI plates provide additional protectionand can withstand multiple small armshits. There are attachable throat andgroin protectors for increased protectionand webbing loops onthe front and back of the vestfor attaching pouches fromthe Modular LightweightLoad-CarryingEquipment (MOLLE).Enhanced Small Arms Protective Insert (ESAPI)Performance CharacteristicsComponent Materials: OTV/DAP/ESBI Carrier: Cordura, Kevlar,and/or Twaron. Deltoid and Axillary Protectors (DAP)Enhanced Side Ballistic Insert (ESBI)Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) combat operationsincreased the extensive use of improvised explosivedevices (IED) by terrorist insurgents. Whereas theOuter Tactical Vest (OTV) of the Interceptor Body Armor(IBA) provides torso protection from the fragmentaryeffects of IEDs, combat commanders and medicalpersonnel identified a shortfall in the upper arm andunder arm areas not currently covered by the IBA. Tomeet this threat and to provide an increased level ofprotection, Deltoid and Axillary Protectors (DAP) and theEnhanced Side Ballistic Insert (ESBI) were developed.DAP consists of two ambidextrous modular components, the Deltoid (upper arm) Protector and the Axillary (underarm) Protector. The Deltoid Protector attaches at the shoulderof the OTV and is secured around the wearer’s armwith a strap. The Axillary Protector is worn under the OTVand is attached to the underside of the shoulder portion ofthe OTV and to the interior adjustment strap on the lowerside of the OTV. The DAP provides the same level of protectionas the OTV. They are issued as an assembly of twoeach Deltoid and Axillary Protectors.Performance CharacteristicsComponent MaterialsDAP and ESBI Carrier: Cordura, Kevlar, and/or TwaronBallistic Insert: Composite ballistic ceramic platewith coated ballistic fabric backingColor: Universal Camouflage PatternWeight:DAP: 5.3 pounds per setESBI: 7.1 pounds per setSize: N/AThe ESBI consists of two ambidextrous modular components, the carrier assembly, and the ballistic insert. Thecarrier assembly attaches to the OTV by using the webbingon both the front and the back of the carrier, and can befurther secured through incorporation with the DAP. TheESBI can use either a 7 x 8 inch ESBI or a size extra smallESAPI. The ESBI will be issued in sets each consisting oftwo carriers and two inserts.Deltoid/Upper ArmAxillary/UnderarmEnhanced Side BallisticInsert
