Rappel concernant les dénombrableset indénombrablesE Les dénombrables sont des noms qui désignent des choses, des êtresque l’on peut compter. Ces noms peuvent être employés au singulier etau pluriel.Exemples : a car, two cars…a horse, three horses…People est dénombrable, mais toujours pluriel (sans S !) lorsqu’il signifiedes gens ; il peut donc être précédé de 2, 3, etc. il signifie dans ce cas2, 3… personnes.Exemple : Five people attended yesterday’s meeting.E Les indénombrables désignent des choses, des activités, des notions(sentiments, qualités…) que l’on considère de façon globale. On ne peutpas les «compter». Ils sont toujours au singulier.Exemples :ALIMENTS, MATÉRIAUX : wood (le bois), bread (le pain)…NOTIONS (abstraites) : advice (des conseils), news (des nouvelles), information(des renseignements), evidence (des preuves), work (l’emploi, letravail).ÉLÉMENTS CONCRETS : furniture (des meubles), luggage (des bagages),hair (des cheveux).ACTIVITÉS : reading (la lecture), dancing (la danse) : ce sont des gérondifs,dérivés de verbes. Laughter (des rires), football…Certains noms peuvent être dénombrables ou indénombrables selon lescas.
