Telstra Ironwoman Cont...Home to regroup and off again forNewcastle. This time Mumma Bull,Margo and I joined her. This time itwas the ELIMINATOR. The lastfour get knocked out each rounduntil there are six left in the fourth. The Eliminator in itself adds thatextra bit of pressure, the NEED tomake it through. All was goingwell, mentally prepared for theorder of events to be Ski, Swim,Board, only to be text after briefingthat this had changed to Ski BoardSwim. So we redirected andrefocused how to mentally preparefor the Ski, Board, Swim. If you’rethinking “what does it matter?”Well, it matters when you’re younginexperienced and prepared forone think, only for it to be changedat a moment notice. So Alyssa has a great warm uplooks good, fresh, ready to go andis all smiles. We set up the ski andpaddle and Alyssa gets readyunder the tent for the bigannouncement. The weather wasboiling, water was cool, handlerswere nervously excited andemotions were running high. Liningup on the ramp with the MasterAndrew Buhk yelling “Ladies in theStarters hands” the girls setthemselves. BANG the gun goesand the race is on. Heart rates rise.Smooth ski race for Alyssa, gets offclean runs with the girls still downthe back needing to move up toavoid elimination. Straight ontothe board and still in danger ofelimination, she finished the boardleg still in 14th spot. She needs tobe in 13th or higher to stay in therace. Into her swim leg she turnsthe cans and comes into the wavezone. She cracks a wave with halfthe field, gets up, starts runningand crosses the line, top 10.Woohoo through to next round. So, regroup and refocus. BrodieMoir winner of that round choosesthe order, Ski, Board, Swim AGAIN!Ten minutes to refocus, get thebreath back, have a drink, swimdown get back on stage and goagain. Again The Master “Buhky”“Ladies in the Starters hands”BANG and they’re off, good startfor Alyssa in a good spot, coming insmooth looking good, wave builds, second guessed herself and sleweddown the wave, CRASHING intoHayley Bateup sending her flying, two other girls also lose their skis.Alyssa not knowing whether to getback on and paddle in or swim in,finally sees me waving her in leavesthe ski and swims. She arrives inlast position and needs to runthem down. Onto the board,Alyssa is still working hard. Thetension builds as the girls come inon the board, their handlers yellingat them, encouraging them. Alyssacomes in 12th place. She needs tobe in 9th place or faster to make itthrough. Immediately into thewater she swims a great racepassing Hayley Bateup. She turnsthe last can comes into the wavezone but… no waves. She swimsthe whole way back, gets up andruns… she comes in 10th butneeded to be 9th. She missesround 3 but achieved an awesomeresults. Alyssa was happy with herperformance and moved from 14thto 13th on the ladder. Needless tosay she has not made a new friendin Hayley Bateup! The next race was at the infamousPortsea. Now, Portsea is“infamous” due to the size the surfcan get to. Some years it’s nothing, other years, 10-12ft waves. Heavy, thick, waves coming fromTasmania. The water is cold anddark water. Scared yet? Wellimagine, being on a ski for one yearthinking about tackling these kindof conditions. Intimidating, scary, petrifying or all of the above. This time, Brother Bull, Sam, BigDaddy Bull, David, Shane Dalzieland myself head down to Portsea. We get out of the car and look overthe top of the cliff. OMG surf is up,but very do-able for Alyssa. Wetake Alyssa to her accommodationonly to discover she is roomingwith… Hayley Bateup. Alyssa’s facedrops, shoulders drop, it’s not agreat start. The briefing starts at 4pm. Wehead to the beach for a warm up,to feel the surf, get to know whatit’s like and what it does. We cantell the fear is rising in Alyssabecause she forgets to bring hertogs towel, cap and goggles!!! Weare trying to comfort her and saythis was good for her, picking allthe good things to see and goodthings about the surf only to thenwitness a thumper wave setcoming through. The tears start! Ilook for Buhky to find out who Icould ask to swim out with her andfind Phil Clayton. Phil talks toAlyssa and says he will swim outwith her after the briefing. A sighof relief comes over me, (andAlyssa). We attend the briefingwhere she hears the legends, KyHurst Shannon Eckstein andCourtney Hancock talking aboutthe size of the waves and breakingskis. Not really what we wantAlyssa to listen to!Phil Clayton is a legend of thesport. He has so much history andknowledge and the opportunity forAlyssa to swim out with him andbenefit from his mentoring wasinvaluable. Off they go, into the ripand it sucks them straight out theback. He tells her what to look forand what to do in differentsituations. She is now smiling,HOORAY. She goes out on herboard again flying out in the rip.Hair dry, easy. Done !!!Newsletter of the Alexandra Headland Surf Lifesaving Club www.alexsurfclub.com.au Page 8

Telstra Ironwoman Cont...Standing on the beach talking toTrevor Hendy and Phil Claytonwhen Phil says he remembered thefirst time he saw Portsea, he criedand Trevor did exactly what Phildid for Alyssa. Now that is the signof true champions, passing onknowledge to help the young gunscome through.Race day comes, Phil's words toAlyssa are “It’s only water.” Offshe goes for a warm up swim withSam, sucked out in the rip again, around the cans and back in.Shane waxes the board and ski toprovide more grip for theconditions. Alyssa goes out on theboard. She flies out, smooth, cleannot a care in the world. Then ontothe ski, with more wax thannormal, she gets SMASHED by theshore dump, tears roll down,Shane explains the need for morewax, but she didn’t like it. Shanewaved me down to help with thetears and to explain about the wax.I tell her it’s like a seat belt withthat much wax in these conditions, but Alyssa still doesn’t like it. I tellher “great athletes adjust, so todayis the day to be a great athlete.”She gets on still not happy, wigglesaround but off she goes and makesit out clean and smooth. Tensionsare rising in all areas. Alyssa comesin and Sam sets the up ski readyfor the race. We discuss the raceplan and the instructions. The fearis still evident in Alyssa's eyes butshe gets warm by putting a hotwater bottle inside her jacket.“OK Ladies you’re on… line it up”were the words from theorganisers. The ski leg is first, girls areshivering, fear in a lot of eyes, eventhe legends, they knew whatPortsea can deliver. The gun goes, they grab their skis and run downto the rip. Some more so thanothers, Shane yelling “Get On”,she’s on clean no wiggling, she getssucked out in the rip wavesforming out the back, tension onthe beach. “She needs to commit, she needs to go now, bloody hell”were some words being said. She’sout over the last wave. Remembersome of these waves are huge, thetip of the ski to the end of the skicover the face of the wave. What agreat start. Now to get in, NaomiFlood the Olympian takes controlof the first leg makes it look easy.Alyssa comes in smooth justslightly losing it at the end. Thenshe’s into her favourite leg; theboard. She goes with the packaround the cans. Theses cans are aLONG way out. Paddling well, comes to the wave zone, Alyssadoesn’t want to take the wave butPortsea had a different idea, it tookher and she had to commit. It wasa BIG one, down she went and heldit. Well done. Now into the swimleg. She goes in with the group andmust be tired now. This is twicethe distance of a normalIronwoman race. Keeping up withthe pack and looking for a wave, but no avail, so Alyssa swims thewhole way in, finishing in 14thspot.“OK ladies you have 10mins, getyourselves warm and ready to go.”Alyssa goes for swim down, niceand easy, gets her breath backready to do it all again. This time itwas Board, Swim, Ski. She takes offon the board, this time committing, listening to Shane, in 4th placegoing around the distant cans, intothe wave zone just behind the top3 girls pushing for a wave. Justmisses the wave and the other 3get it. Now she looks behind herand a boomer has formed, everyone riding the same wave 13girls on this boomer. They come in,chaos in the transition, boardsgoing everywhere, Sam getsswamped. Off she goes into theswim, gets a mouth full of water, still pushing forward coughing andspluttering. Once she gets intorhythm she swims well. There isstill no wave for her on the wayback in and she swims the wholeway. Now for the ski leg. Againthe handlers and coaches areyelling about where to go andwhen to get on. Alyssa is on andstarts paddling with just the tips ofthe paddle going in the water,Shane yells ”just commit to it”,waves forming, she goes over thefirst over and clears the second,SHE’S OUT. Sigh of relief, now sheraces the other girls. She has agreat ski leg comes in smooth, holding it together, this timepaddles down the wave. She musthave listened to Shane’s advice toget in front of the white water. Shepulls away from the other girls, hasa little roll off at the end butfinishes strong coming in 7thbeating some big names likeHayley Bateup and Brodie Moir.BIG smiles, BIG sigh of relief and ahuge weight off her shoulders. She did it! She faced her fears andconquered them. It was aremarkable effort.Alyssa is homeward bound for thenext three carnivals.
