Race director MoeLalonde and his committee, many of whom are UticaRoadrunners, did a great job, both with event logisticsand a fine awards program featuring lovely potteryprizes at the town’s central gazebo. Despite temperatureshovering around 90F and humidity at least as high, 40Club members were among the 294 finishers, sevenmore than last year. Best male and female Club racerswere Steve Paddock, third overall, and Ellen Furnari, third female overall, as well as first in her 25-29 age group. The big news from the KAC 5K was that our masters andgrandmaster runners absolutely ruled! John Draper, sixth place overall, captured the top male mastersaward, with Scott Suba next fastest in twelfth place. The older age groups were utterly dominated by UticaRoadrunners, with the following members first in theirfive-year categories: Cornelia Brown and Tom Bick, 60-64; Susan Luley and Bruce Palmer, 55-59; Tina Lindseyand Bill Kosina, 50-54; as well as Scott and John takingM45-49 and M40-44, respectively. In age-graded performance, Utica Roadrunners took 10 ofthe top 16 places! Summer Sizzle 5-MilerGrows in Numbers andRunner Approval! An extremely scenic, modified, well-marked, seemingly less-hilly, fast-finish course drew27 more participants than last year to the Utica Roadrunners’ Summer Sizzle 5-Miler onSunday, June 9, with an even more impressive volunteer presence than previous years.Race Director Dennis Johnson designed and coordinated a well-sponsored event, whichfeatured a festive awards party at the finish line pavilion knoll below the SUNY-IT campuscenter. The Club-sponsored event, which wound its way amidst the picturesque campusroads, walkways and reduced, manicured cross-country trails, benefited the Stevens-SwanHumane Society.Unique to the race was the family team awards, with a preponderance of accoladesgoing to Utica Roadrunners with the fastest combined times. Mark Novak and RyanKelly took the Father & Daughter prize; David and William Paddock, the Father & Sonaward; Alexander and Dina White, the Husband & Wife category; Maryann and JustynaWilkinson, the Mother & Daughter honors; and Leisa and Devin Murphy, the Mother &Son laurels. In looking at the Club’s best age-graded performances (i.e., age and gender calculated tocorresponding world records), our Grandmaster women surpassed even younger menin their efforts! The following were all considered Regional Class caliber: Susan Luley(75.18%), Bruce Palmer (74.76%), Tina Lindsey (73.81%), Paul Humphrey (73.81%), IngridOtto-Jones (71.35%), Tom Bick (70.55%), Cory Battles (70.35%), and Ginny Truax (70.1%).Also with highly graded efforts were Justyna Wilkinson (69.94%), Gary Kulis (69.92%),and Scott Suba (69.13%). Female numbers very nearly equaled male participation at theSummer Sizzle, not usual for most races where guys normally surpass gals two-to-one.Top age-group winners were: Ingrid Otto-Jones (F45-49), Tina Lindsey (F50-54), SusanLuley (F55-59), Cornelia Brown (F60+), Ryan Misencik (M35-39), Paul Humphrey (M45-49), Gary Kulis (M50-54), Bruce Palmer (M55-59), Tom Bick (M60-64), Rich Hahn (M65-69), and Joe Madeira (M70+). The Club’s fastest runners were Cory Battles, Josh Kuellingand Paul Humphrey, finishing sixth through eighth, respectively. Breaking the top 25 ofthe 156 racers were Bruce Palmer (12th), Scott Suba (19th), Gary Kulis (22nd), JustynaWilkinson (24th), and Ryan Misencik (25th).The Official Newsletter of the Utica RoadrunnersJULY 2013 11

Now exactly halfway through the 2013 Grand Prix season, surprising outcomes continue toheadline the standings, with determined, dark horse racers surpassing the perennial leadersdue to their dedication to the series. James Latshaw has wrested the lead in the M40-44 andothers have moved up onto their age-group podia. Thus far, we have 44 more Grand Prix eventparticipations than last year, and only two age groups unoccupied. Seventy-two males and 49females are represented among 121 Utica Roadrunners in the Grand Prix. But, there’s still time toget involved with Grand Prix racing and challenge even those with seemingly insurmountabledominance. Remember, age group honors are based on your best seven races, with awardsalso going to those with most cumulative points, 100% participation, and family involvement.(GP standings available at: www.uticaroadrunners.org)The Grand Prix now takes more than a month’s hiatus to make room for Boilermaker training, but comes back with the very distinctive and popular “official Boilermaker cool-down,” theMillers Mills Sundae 5K run on July 21st. (Hardcopy registrations are available online at: http://millersmillsny.webs.com/sundae-run and at our weekly Wednesday development runs.)See you on the road and trails, and remember to stay strong, train safe, and race swift!~ Ted Lenio 6/11/13The Official Newsletter of the Utica RoadrunnersJULY 2013 12

uns; and the scores of marathons and half-marathons,triathlons and CrossFit competitions that are selling outfrom Kona to Daytona Beach. If you aren’t training for somephysical ordeal that entails safety-pinning a race number toyour person, then surely you’ve been hit up for sponsorshipdollars by someone who is. . .We are not talking about a fitness craze; that connotessomething faddish and temporary, like parachute pants orGroupon. America is in the midst of a sustained trend, whatRunning USA ca the Second Running Boom (with boomletsin triathlon and MOB runs). The number of U.S. road-racefinishes has tripled since 1990, to 13.9 million in 2011. Andduring that time it’s become increasingly important to putthe seat down in the Porta Potties in the parking lot: Racefields have gone from 75% male to 55% female. . .Social media have also fueled the boom, ratcheting upthe “Look at me!” factor while piquing the curiosity of theuninitiated. “You see your buddy on Facebook,” says JohnKorff, who has participated in more than 100 enduranceraces, including 100-mile ultramarathons, “and he’sstanding there in his spandex shorts and race T-shirt, guthanging out, and he’s just finished a marathon. So you startthinking, Well, I’ve got a gut . . . Maybe I can do this too.”To stand at the finish line in Las Vegas is to know that you,Gut-Hanging-Out-Over-Your-Shorts-Guy, can definitely doit. There was no shortage of plodders and walkers on theStrip, acolytes of John Bingham, a.k.a. the Penguin, authorof An Accidental Athlete (a memoir of taking up runningat age 43) and self-described “spokesman for the slowrunningmovement.” His mantra: The miracle isn’t that Ifinished. The miracle is that I had the courage to start.Such bromides had long provoked sneers from runningsnobs who believed that if you couldn’t finish a marathonin, say, 3-1/2 hours, you had no business taking the start. Here we arrive at the crux of today’s Endurance Renaissance. In the decades-long battle between the Penguins and thesinewy, 45-beats-per-minute-resting-heart-rate, front-ofthe-packSerious Runners, the Penguins have won a decisivevictory. They’ve done this by uncoupling performancefrom identity: You don’t need to be fast to be consideredan endurance athlete.Having crunched numbers dating back three decades,Klingensmith reports that as the number of marathonershas ballooned, so has their average time. “The averagefinish of a marathon has gotten 40 minutes slower in thepast 30 years,” he notes. “There’s a whole range of reasonspeople are signing up for these events” – to commemoratea loved one, to raise money to fight diseases, to lose weight,to keep weight off – “but I don’t think performance ranksvery high on the list.”Kingsmith distinguishes between “competers” and“completers.” . . . Mary Wittenberg, the head of New YorkRoad Runners . . . recognizes “the beginning of a philosophyshift,” a collective attitude of non-judgment according towhich “everybody is celebrating everybody else who’s outthere.” . . .Scott Dickey, CEO of Competitor Group Inc. identifies stillanother “external factor” prodding runners to the start line.He calls it the Biggest Loser effect. “The fact that there wasa prime-time television show about people who were veryobese, who were losing hundreds of pounds in a bootcampsetting and who, at the end of each season, attempta marathon,” Dickey says, was a powerful recruiting tool forendurance events.”]So, we at SpliTimes and the Utica Roadrunners would liketo know what you think and how you feel about this spateof strenuous, sometimes silly, yet universally satisfyingchallenges. Is this trend significant . . . to you, your familyand friends, and/or have implications for our Club? Pleaseshare your reactions, views, comments, questions, opinions, even idle musings on our Facebook page or to the SpliTimesnewsletter. ~ Ted Lenio Utica Roadrunner Norm Cognetto (right) enjoys a cold drink with his brother,Rick after finishing the first annual Mighty Run 5K that took place on thegrounds of the Masonic Care Community. The Official Newsletter of the Utica RoadrunnersJULY 2013 15

Cory Battles, email: ctbny@hotmail.com.At the (Other) RacesUtica Roadrunners proved tough as “swamp rats” at the 34 th Annual Hess Express 5K and 10K Runs at Oneida ShoresPark on Saturday, June 15 th . Joining a growing trend of racers running multiple events in one day or over several, our ownBruce Palmer and Tina Lindsey ran BOTH distances, with less than a half hour recovery time! The gun cracked for thecertifi ed 5K race at 9 A.M. as 377 participants wound their way along the shore. Tina’s 25:30 earned her fi rst place inF50-54 and an age-graded performance of 67.41%, while Bruce captured second place in M55-59 with 21:51 (70.33%).Coincidentally and curiously, Josh Kuelling ran the exact same time as Bruce, though it resulted in his fi rst place awardin M30-34 (59:32%)! Let’s hear it one more time for our grandmaster speedsters! The 10K start was exactly one hour after the 5K gun, and saw seven Utica Roadrunners nearly all taking their respectiveage-group podia. Special recognition goes out to Joanne Reese for her 80.06% highest age-graded, national classperformance! With most senior runners listed fi rst, the results were: Bob Vandenbergh, fi rst in M65-69, with 50:29(69.88%); Richard Hahn, second in M65-69, with 1:00:50 (57.39%); Tom Bick, third in M60-64, with 47:47 (70.49%);Joanne Reese, fi rst in F60-64, with 48:58 (80.06%); Cornelia Brown, second in F60-64, with 58:08 (69.39%); and lastbut not least, Bruce Palmer with 43:50 and second highest Utica Roadrunners age-graded performance of 72.97%; andBettina Lindsey, fi rst in F50-54, with 52:06 (67.62%).~ Ted Lenio, 6/27/13The Official Newsletter of the Utica RoadrunnersJULY 2013 20
