A recent survey by travel websiteTrip Advisor found that nearly half of the top 20international destinations for Chinese travellerswere in Southeast Asia, while locations such asKyoto, Japan, and Jeju Island in South Koreaare undergoing explosive growth in interestfrom mainland Chinese tourists. According toChinese travel agency Ctrip, Chinese interest inSoutheast Asia is driven by the country’s youngwhite-collar workers, who don’t have the timeor money to go as far as Europe. Trip Adviser’s20 most popular outbound destinations formainland Chinese travellers were based onJuly and August 2013 figures on Daodao.com,a customised version of Trip Advisor designedspecifically for Chinese travellers. Hong Kongwas at the top of the list of popular destinationsamong Chinese tourists, followed by Phuket inThailand and Taiwan. We all know not to fly when we’re sick - an airplane is a petri dishfor germs. But what if you’re already at your destination whenyou catch something? We interviewed Devyani Lal, M.D.,a rhinologist at the Mayo Clinic’s Arizona campus, for advice includinghow to alleviate your symptoms and avoid infecting other travelers.Postpone your flight“If you are really sick, you should juststay at your destination,” Dr Lal says. Most airlines let you rebook, but you’ll becharged a cancellation fee (anywhere from$120 to $180, depending on the type ofticket you purchased) and any differencein airfare. Travel Insurance may cover thecost of rescheduling your flight, though youwill probably need a doctor’s certificate.Smartraveller.com.au states travel insuranceis as essential as your passport, regardless ofyour travel destination. If you can’t affordtravel insurance, you can’t afford to travel! If you incur medical expenses while overseasand you don’t have travel insurance, you arepersonally liable for covering these costs. The Government cannot pay for medicalexpenses overseas. Nor will your domesticprivate health insurance. Some travelinsurance offer a trip-interruption benefitthat includes illness. So if you’re too sickto board the plane and you get a doctorscertificate you may be covered. If you must travel, wear a maskIt will undoubtedly call attention to you,and that’s probably a good thing. If you’resick “you’re creating a virus factory,” Dr Lalsays, and you don’t want to subject others toyour germs. (As Lal points out, 90 percent ofcolds are caused by viruses, which are highlycontagious. Bacterial infections are lesscommon and don’t spread as easily.) Somepharmacies and airport vendors sell masks.Congestion reliefThe Neti pot is an Indian device used toclean out the sinuses: You pour warm, saltywater from the pot into one nostril and let itdrain out the other. “The Neti pot has verylow side effects and is well tolerated by mostpatients, Dr. Lal says. “I’d say that 99 percentof my patients like it.” As another option, trysquirting salty water (either previously boiledor distilled) into your nostrils with a plasticsqueeze bottle. Both Neti pots and nasalsqueeze bottles are sold at pharmacies. (Besure to clean the Neti pot or squeeze bottleas directed between uses.*)Help for a sinus infectionStart treatment with a nasal decongestant(such as Vicks Sinex), since there are fewerside effects, Dr. Lal says. If that doesn’t help, try an oral decongestant such as Sudafed.(Don’t take Sudafed if you have severehigh blood pressure, or severe coronaryartery disease.) To keep your ears fromhurting during the flight, use a nasal spray25 minutes before takeoff and 25 minutesbefore landing. “The lining of the nose isconnected to the eustachian tube, whichequalizes pressure from the ear to preventpain,” Dr. Lal explains.Antibiotics - the last resortAs viruses cause most sinus infections andcolds, antibiotics are useless against them(and a cold will go away in a week anyway). But should your cold not go away after aweek, or has gotten worse, you may havea bacterial infection. See a doctor, whomay prescribe antibiotics. If you’re proneto infection and are traveling to a countrywhere finding antibiotics may be difficult, consider asking your doctor to give you ashort course of antibiotics to carry with youjust in case.4 NOVEMBER 2013*Consult your doctor before taking any medication or starting any treatment. Use all medication and products as directed.ENDLESS VACATION 5

LANDMARKSFRENCH VINEYARDSParisFEATUREDWINE-GROWINGREGIONVine TuningRhone Valley and The RivieraBased on an article by Gary Walther, Vine Tuning(U.S. Endless Vacation magazine)RHONEVALLEYMarseillesAvignonScads of wineries in France welcome visitors, but the point is to visit theones that are grand cru (that is, exceptional) in terms of both history andlandscape - offering not just a taste of the wine but also a taste of theregional wine culture and terroir. Here are 5 French estates that do just that.NiceTHE RIVIERAThe RivieraChâteau de CrématThe intertwined C’s carved into thestonework and etched into the windowshere should look familiar. That’s right, theymake up the Chanel logo, except Crémathad the logo first. In the 1920s, CocoChanel was pals with the then owner, andhe gave her the copyright as a gift. (Thechâteau’s logo is now CK, for current ownerCornelis Kamerbeek.) Crémat stands in thehills above Nice in the Bellet appellation, the smallest in France. Don’t miss theTerrasse du Ciel (Terrace of Heaven) forits panoramic view of Nice and the sea. Theeasiest way to get there is on the No. 62bus from Nice. Catch it at the Magnan busstation, and after a scenic 25-minute ride,it will stop right outside the château’s gates.442 Chemin de Crémat, NiceClos Sainte MagdeleineThis is the Miss World of vineyards, seton a thumb-shaped peninsula high abovethe Mediterranean. The wines are from theCassis appellation (pronounced cass-seeto distinguish it from the black currantliqueur) and the estate is best known forits white wine, exotic with notes of almondand honey. The tour takes in the domaine, where groves of olive, mulberry and almondtrees grow, and the cellar, concludingwith a tasting ($22 per person). Cassis,a particularly comely town, is 15 milessoutheast of Marseilles. For one of themost scenic drives on this coast, follow thewinding Route du Crête from Cassis toLa Ciotat. clossaintemagdeleine.frNOTHING TO WINE ABOUT: (left to right) Avignonis only 20 miles from Domaine de Coyeux and is wellworth the detour. Cassis,a beautiful and unique wine making region thatoverlooks Neice.Rhone ValleyChâteau de BeaucastelThis top winery shows off the rugged vineyardlandscape of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The terrain’schief peculiarity is its galets, softball-sizedstones that look like the remnants of a meteorshower. In fact, they were torn from the Alpsduring the last Ice Age and deposited here. Some experts say the stones help ripen thegrapes by absorbing heat during the dayand releasing it at night. Beaucastel, oneof Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s best, is the onlyproperty that still uses all 13 grape varietalspermitted by law in the appellation. You willbe delighted by the impressive barrel roomand the charming tour guide. The tasting room atthis top producer, which also makes redwine, has an impossibly beautiful setting. The vineyards undulate away toward robustrock outcroppings called the Dentelles deMontmirail for their teethlike shape. Thetasting room is in a modern rendition of atraditional Provençal mas, or farmhouse.Route de Lafare, Beaumes-de-VeniseChâteau la CanorgueThis property is in Bonnieux, the classicProvençal hill town that formed the heartof the world described by Peter Mayle in hisbest seller, “A Good Year”. In fact, the 17thcenturychâteau is such an exempla - honeycoloredstone, cornflower-blue shutters - thatit was the setting for the 2006 film of thesame name, starring Russell Crowe and AlbertFinney. (Trivia: A swimming pool installedfor the movie was later covered over and theground replanted with vines.)
