The ‘Grand Vin’ was mated to a simple plate of cheeses, nuts, and sweets in order to giveit center stage. 2010 THORN-CLARKE WILLIAM RANDELL BAROSSA SHIRAZ. The winery’sflagship cuvee, named for a pioneering ancestor, gains superb concentration of very low-yieldingold vines and complexity from 18 months’ minimum in barrels. Well, this was the big boy.Despite its daunting price, it was a best-seller this evening thanks to its impressive quality.OCTOBER 21 MICHIGAN TROPHY WINNERS DINNER AT GRANGE KITCHEN -Yours truly assembled and presented eight star Michigan wines to accompany a wonderfulmenu conceived by Chef-Proprietor Brandon Johns following his tasting the wines. L. MAWBYLEELANAU PENINSULA BLANC DE BLANCS led off in the aperitif role. This perennial GoldMedal and sometimes Best Sparkling Wine Trophy winner came in for high praise of itschardonnay and bottle bouquet goodnesses.Sauteed Michigan Shrimp and Smoked Ham sustained Chef Brandon’s reputation forsourcing his ingredients with 60 miles of the restaurant. The Okemos-raised shrimp were fullflavored,as were the strips of smoked ham (Brandon loves to work with porcine products).Alongside, I presented CHATEAU FONTAINE LEELANAU PENINSULA PINOT BLANC, the firstwine to win a trophy in back to back vintages. It showed why Michigan’s pinot blancs areconsidered world class. Also, CHATEAU GRAND TRAVERSE OLD MISSION PENINSULASHIP OF FOOLS, a rollicking boat of three pinots - blanc, gris, and noir. Gold Medal winner andfully deserving.Spicy Fried Pork Belly with Korean Style Kimchi Pancakes joined BOATHOUSE SEMISWEET LEELANAU PENINSULA RIESLING, a Trophy winner in the 2012 vintage. ‘Sweetmatches spicy’ proved the winning formula here, and Michigan riesling’s naturally high aciditymade matters even better. The pork belly was an astonishingly tender and flavorful puff, on ofthe highlights of the evening, not to mention the unique pancakes. Enter Michigan’s southwestgrowing region and red wine, FENN VALLEY LAKE MICHIGAN SHORE CAPRICCIO, daringlymatched to Rainbow Trout, Wheat Berries, and Stewed Mushrooms. Because this chambourcinmerlotcuvee had no tannin and the fish no ‘fishiness’, the combination worked well. Capricciowon a Trophy last year and a Gold Medal in 2013.The master course, Braised Lamb, Smoked Lamb Sausage, and Polenta enjoyed two redwines: PENINSULA CELLARS OLD MISSION PENINSULA CABERNET FRANC, winner of theBest Dry Red Wine Trophy, and GILL’S PIER LEELANAU PENINSULA JUST UNLEASHED,a five-variety cuvee that won a Gold Medal in the Semi Dry Red arena. The first wine, one ofMichigan’s best ever cabernet francs, was a classic match. The fact that the second worked welltoo once again reminds us that banning wines with residual sweetness from the dinner table isa mistake.A dessert of Pear, Almond, and Elderberry components was enhanced by Michigan’sgreatest fortified wine, ST. JULIAN LAKE MICHIGAN SHORE SOLERA CREAM SHERRY,drawn from a solera begun over 60 years ago. That it’s based on the humble niagara grapevariety gives testament to the important role of cask aging when it comes to sweet, fortifiedwines.Ann Arbor Tasters Guild page 2
