November 2006 Web Page www.chili.orgVolume 19 Issue 11BREAST CANCER AWARENESS COOKOFFAUTOMATED EXTERNALDEFIBRILLATOR FUNDThe 6th Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Cookoff held Saturday, October 14th,in Midland, Texas was again a great success. The “first” numbers are in and thecookoff raised $25,000.00 with a few donations still to come. A total of 50 chili cooksand 21 bar-b-que teams entered with a number of folks traveling quite a distance tosupport the cookoff. Some of the cooks who come to this cookoff are “once a year”cooks – just for this event. When Lee Roy and I look at the sign-in sheets after thecookoff is over and we realize that we know everyone, it really makes you feel good.It is a reminder that we have been blessed with a great number of friends.A really nice thing to notice about a cookoff is the help from the people from yourdesignated charity. From receptionists, to lab techs, to patients, to recipients of helpfrom the Gifts of Hope – they were there. As you all know a cookoff of this size does not just happen. I can’t thank any of youenough for all that you did to make this such a success. From the Fish Fry Fridaynight to the stacking of tables and chairs when it was over – and everything that wasdone “in between” – Thank You from the deepest part of our hearts.” (PatsyChildress)Dodie Simpson, Great Pepper of the Black Gold Pod, presents a check for $1000to Directors Ken Rodd and Douglas Seelig for the AED Fund. Page 6 Terlingua Trails November 2006NOBODY TOLD MEI’ve been to my first Great Pepper’s Meeting, and I can assure you that nobody told me what to expect.I’m not sure that anyone can tell you what to expect. You can learn more about CASI and chili cooking thanyou can imagine, and you can meet more chili cooksthan you knew existed! No sooner had we arrived at the hotel onThursday than people called my name, shook my hand, and said they were glad to see me. I didn’t know mostof them, but they had met me at a cookoff somewhere. It was kind of embarrassing, but it was nice. I’ve got to pay more attention to learningpeople’s names. After checking in at the registration desk and getting my name tag, even morestrangers shook my hand. Many of them recognized my name from seeing it on thesecolumns. I didn’t know anybody read my words! As we made our way to the Hospitality Room for the first of many times, morestrangers shook my hand. Strangers were rapidly being replaced by friends. Lots ofpeople were visiting the Hospitality Room, and all of them were friendly. I guess chilicooks are just willing to meet people, just as they are willing to have fun. All of theCASI Directors were there, and they, too, were very friendly.I’m a Shriner, too, and everybody knows that Shriners are experts at meetingpeople and having fun with folks that were strangers a few minutes ago. I can testifythat Chiliheads are even better at making new friends. I was surprised and impressedwith their acceptance of this northern hillbilly in a strange land.Friday started pretty slow. We ate breakfast in the hotel coffee shop withVirgil & Roylene Johnson, and between bites we met more new friends. After lunch on Friday, all of the candidates for Director met with the GreatPeppers and guests for a series of roundtable discussions. For several minutes, eachcandidate sat with 8 to 12 Great Peppers and answered questions about their plans forCASI and cookoffs. Most candidates cited the need for making CASI grow, butproposed solutions were scarce. It’s a tough problem, and our directors can’t fix italone. After the roundtable discussions were complete, we attended a session withExecutive Director Alan Dean covering a number of concerns and asking forcomments. I guess he was really asking for ideas and help. We talked about insurance, and we talked about how to get new members. We talked about a lot of things. It wasa pretty good day, all around. Then it was back to the Hospitality Room, where the real business of themeeting transpires. There is food and drink available and a great deal of conversation.Sometime later, we fell into bed for a few hours of sleep. You have to learn to “sleepfast” so that you can get 8 hours of sleep in about 4 hours.Saturday is the Big Day! This is the actual Great Pepper’s Meeting that is thereason for this gathering of friends. It starts about 9:00 am with seating of delegatesand seeding of new pods. This year, there was some discussion and a bit ofdisagreement, but everything was settled peaceably and without bloodshed. The “Meeting” part of the meeting gave us some real information, such as theamount of money raised for charity ($1,000,000), the number of chilis judged(13,741), and the number of cooks and show teams qualified (368 and 164). We heardthat CASI has about 1600 members, and wants more. Then came reports from eachof the Directors giving information on their particular area of interest. There’s a newweb page (www.krazyflats.com) and we may not be able to have campfires at TICCthis year because of dry conditions. After the meeting, back to the Hospitality Room. All in all, it was a good meeting and I had a great time. I’ve always thoughtthat chili people are the finest, friendliest, most fun-loving people in the world, and thisget-together convinced me that I’m right. Anybody can attend the Great Pepper’sMeeting, but you have to be a Delegate to vote. I’d suggest that you go to Tyler, Texas, next year.Steve DowdyBess’ BestHello to all from beautiful Lamar, Missouri. Thanks to all who took the time to look Harry and I up atTerlingua and say hi.This past chili year has really been a bummer forus as far as traveling and cooking. What started out to bea fun filled year, or that is the way we had planned it, allgot changed in March when I fell and broke my arm and wrist. Our traveling wasback and forth to Springfield either to the hospital or a doctor’s office. The onlyconnection all this traveling had to do with chili was almost every trip or visit theywanted to know if we had brought chili with us.Harry and I want to say congratulations to all the winners of Terlingua2006. Being a past TICC winner in 2000, it is a feeling that words cannot reallydescribe, and it is something that you earn and no one can ever take it away fromyou. Again, congratulations. With Terlingua 2006 in the books that means that Thanksgiving is right ontop of us and following Thanksgiving is the ho-ho season. For those who are notaround Harry as I am every day, I must explain Harry has a nickname for everythingand I mean everything. As Harry would explain it, the ho-ho season is the time between Thanksgivingand Christmas that most everyone forgets what the Christmas season really is andreplaces it with shopping and buying everything for everyone that they don’t needand the person doesn’t have the money to spend. So they go in debt and wear outthe credit cards only to gripe and complain when the bills starting coming in afterthe first of the New Year. My problem is that Harry has the ho-ho season 365 daysa year.Thank you all for your time this time & remember to start slow & then taperoff!Bess & HarryDonations, Contributions and MemorialsDonations were given to the AED Fund by Borderline Chliheads, CapitalOne, Cowtown CASI, Goat Gap Publishing Company, Green CountryPod, Keystone State Pod, Pod on the Pedernales, and Puget Pod.Donations were made to the AED Fund in memory of Jackie Brown byMarcia Gamino and Pod of the Pass.A donation was made to the CASI Scholarship Fund in memory of PeggyRobbins by Cowtown CASI .A donation was made to the CASI Scholarship Fund in memory of DaleKaraff by Herb & Ruby Ross.A donation was made to the CASI Scholarship Fund in memory of JackieBrown by Michael Peterson.

November 2006 Terlingua Trails Page 7Tales from the RanchOrale CASI, que pasa y how’severybody? What a wonderful summer wehad. Lots of cookoffs and lots of vacationtime, also. Barb and I managed to do a littlefishing along the way and made a fewstops at some casinos here and there. Beingof Indian decent, you might say I investedtoward the well being of my people. Anyway, summer is about over and I’m really ready for some cold weather. It was a good chili year. I only had 3 blowouts on the road, no wrecks, acouple or three bloody Mary mornings, and half a dozen or so burnt chili pots. Otherthan that, it was a good year. The VISA card people even increased my spendinglimit. Yea, buddy. As for the ranch, well things are kind of not normal. It appears that I’vegot this sick and twisted chicken running around the hen house naked, driving myone rooster insane. She has taken this molting thing to the max. All of my otherhens are ok except for this one perverted clucker. We’re talking the feathers aregone, folks. It’s not a pretty sight. I feel sorry for ole Mr. Foghorn-Leghorn. Ilooked in the hen house this morning and there he was sitting in the corner callingtime out.Not giving up on the matter or wondering what I’m going to do about thisordeal, I picked up the land line and called my trusty companion and fellow rancherMr. Dave Boone and commenced to explaining to Dave about my unusual situation.Mr. Dave said he would make a couple of phone calls and get back to me. I wenton about my rat killing.About 30 minutes later, the phone in the barn went off and sure enough itwas my trusty companion and fellow rancher, Mr. Dave Boone. He told me thathe had been talking to Mr. Tex Riley and Mr. Green Jeans (Steve Nadeau), twofellow ranchers from the Central Texas Ranchers Association, and they had readsomewhere in the Farm and Ranch Journal about a new male enhancementformula for roosters. Yo, Rita. It is supposed to be added to the water supply andwa-la, next thing you know you’ve got another Smiling Bob commercial withfeathers.Well, folks, if you think my problems are over, they ain’t. I’ve still got thisone perverted naked chicken, and winter is coming on. If she doesn’t grow somefeathers soon, she’s gonna freeze to death.I got to thinking hard about this and a Tom Terrific idea came to mind. Whydon’t I go into town to the WalMart store and get a box of Pampers or a box ofHuggies. I figure me and this twisted chicken are about the same size as when Iwas born, so the diapers oughta fit. I got some bulldog clips in my chili box I canuse to put these diapers on so hey, hen house problems are over. Enough for theranch happenings.By the time this article comes out, TICC will be over. I hope everybody hada good time and got home safe. If you didn’t make the cut on Saturday, pick youout another cookoff out of the Trails and keep on cooking. It ain’t over till the fatlady sings plus the charities need us. Gotta go, folks, I’m running out of English.Bueno, bye.Patsy Childress wins first place bronze tophy at the White BuffaloBBQ & Chili Cookoff held in Snyder Texas. Page 26 Terlingua Trails November 2006Free Quarter Page Adto CASI Pods, State, Regional andInternational OpensAs a CASI Pod you are required to put on a pod cookoffonce a year. To help you advertise your pod cookoff we alloweach pod to place one quarter page ad in the Terlingua Trails, each year, free of charge. This ad should run the month beforeyour cookoff occurs. Should you decide that you need an adlarger than a quarter page we will simply bill you for the differencein price. This ad should not be confused with the articleadvertising your cookoff in the "Cooking with CASI Calendar"section in the Terlingua Trails.
