Welcome to the 2010 Advanced Apprenticeship Graduation Ceremony
The Consortium for Learning (CfL)
was created in May 2002, to provide
representation and support to the local
network of Work Based Learning (WBL)
Providers, with the aim of raising the
profi le and increasing participation in WBL,
including Apprenticeships.
In 2008 CfL became a registered charity and
adopted the following charitable objectives:
• Improving access to and increasing
participation in Work Based Learning
opportunities for young people
to encourage engagement and
participation in learning post-16;
• Raising the profi le of Work Based
Learning, Apprenticeships and such
other vocational training with colleges,
schools and other educational
institutions to increase awareness;
• Acting as a representative and resource
for Work Based Learning providers in
the Humber sub-region, promoting good
practice and continually improve the
quality of WBL provision.
There are a wide range of key activities
that CfL takes forward in relation to these
objectives, which includes services CfL
offers to its members and additional
activities supporting the promotion of
Apprenticeships. This includes delivering
Apprenticeship Information and Advice
Workshops, hour-long interactive lessons
to local secondary schools, which provide
pupils with a full introduction to what
Apprenticeships can offer.
One of the achievements that CfL
is extremely proud is the Advanced
Apprenticeship Graduation Ceremony.
Now in its fi fth year, this high profi le
graduation ceremony celebrates and
recognises the achievement of all Advanced
Apprentices across the Humber sub-region
(comprising the East Riding of Yorkshire,
Hull, North East Lincolnshire and North
Lincolnshire).
I am delighted to welcome you to our fi fth
Advanced Apprenticeship Graduation
Ceremony.
Attendance at this extremely successful
ceremony has increased from 88 Advanced
Apprentices in the fi rst year to over 150 in
2010. The attending Advanced Apprentices
all wear mortar board and gown, are

presented with a certifi cate and are joined
at the ceremony by their family, friends,
employers and Apprenticeship providers.
I would like to give special thanks to
the sponsors of this prestigious event,
Aimhigher Humber and Hull College, for
their kind contributions in making this an
extra special day for all of the Advanced
Apprentices.
Apprenticeships are becoming increasingly
popular and the government has set
demanding targets to further increase
the numbers of Apprenticeships over
the next few years. The partnership
between Apprentice, Employer and the
Apprenticeship Provider is essential to their
success and today’s ceremony recognises
this.
Advanced Apprenticeships are tough
frameworks to complete, requiring absolute
commitment and determination from
everyone involved. All of the Advanced
Apprentices here today have proved they
had these skills to succeed and who
better to celebrate it with than the family,
friends, employers and Apprenticeship
Providers that helped and supported this
achievement.

What next?
Achievement of an Advanced Apprenticeship does not have to be
the end for learning. Progression to higher level
qualifi cations is a real opportunity.
Higher level qualifi cations don’t just mean
an Honours degree, there are a range of
higher level qualifi cations available from
higher level NVQ’s, Foundation degrees
to a Diploma of HE. Universities and
Higher Education Colleges recognise
Advanced Apprenticeship achievement
as part of their entry requirements and do
not always require young people to have
‘A’ Levels.
Higher Level NVQ’s
Undertaking a higher level NVQ provides
competences that involve the application
of knowledge and skills in a broad range
of complex, technical or professional work
activities. There is a substantial degree of
personal autonomy as well as responsibility
for the work of others. The allocation of
substantial resources features strongly, as
do personal accountabilities for analysis and
diagnosis, design, planning, execution and
evaluation. To apply for a higher level NVQ,
speak to a WBL Provider.
Degrees
There are various degrees available such
as Bachelor Degrees, Foundation Degrees,
Masters Degrees and Doctorates.
For many industries a degree is necessary
for example Law and Medicine. The majority
of courses last three years but there are
also four year sandwich courses where one
year of study is spent in industry. Degrees
can be studied full time or part time. To
apply for a full time higher level course at a
Higher Education Institution (HEI) you may
have to apply through UCAS (Universities
and Colleges Admissions Service) visit the
website www.ucas.com. To apply for a part
time, fl exible course at a HEI, you should
apply directly to your chosen University or
College.
HNC/HND
A Higher National Certifi cate (HNC) or
Diploma (HND) is available in a range
of subjects from accounting to video
production. HNC’s are often studied part
time over two years, ideal for those who
also work. HND’s take two years full time
to complete, or longer part time. HNC’s
can allow entry into the second year of an

honours degree while HND’s allow entry into
the second or third year. To apply for a full
time, part time or fl exible course at a HEI,
you should apply directly to your chosen
University or College.

Success story
Dave Thompson is a communications
and information administrator at the
Consortium for Learning (CfL) and recently
completed his Advanced Apprenticeship
in Customer Service with HYA Training. He
provides information and communication
to Apprenticeship providers across the
Humber sub-region.
As part of his role Dave set up the Humber
Apprentice Panel (HAP) to help local
Apprentices communicate with each other
and share views on Apprenticeships with
providers and external organisations. He
was appointed vice chair of the Yorkshire
and Humber Regional Learner Panel
two years ago, and spoke in front of 400
delegates at a Learner Voice conference,
which Dave never thought possible before
starting his Apprenticeship.
Through his work on the Humber Apprentice
Panel, Dave has liaised with ministers
and government departments, and has
developed an interactive workshop
delivered to Apprenticeship provider staff
and their Apprentices.
Dave and HAP have been acknowledged
through a number of prestigious awards,
with Dave being recognised as runner up
in the national VQ Hero awards in 2008
and both Dave and HAP were shortlisted
in the 2009 national Learning and Skills
Improvement Service (LSIS) Learner Voice
Awards.
The most recent success for Dave was as
a winner in the Yorkshire and the Humber
Apprenticeship Awards. Here Dave was
named as the 2009 Regional Advanced
Apprentice of the Year at the prestigious
Celebration of Learning and Skills (CoLaS)
Awards.
Since completing his Advanced
Apprenticeship winning this award Dave has
progressed onto additional qualifi cations
and is currently undertaking the Preparing
to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector
(PTLLS) Award.
Dave is also a key member of the CfL team
responsible for developing, planning and
managing the Advanced Apprenticeship
Graduation Ceremony.
