The constructionindustry had been identified as themain culprit for causing environmentaldegradation. As an industry, it is amajor consumer of natural resourcesand energy and one of the highestproducer of waste as well as themajor source of CO2 emissions, andpollution. The construction industryin general consumes as much as 40percent of energy, 12 percent of itswater and contributes towards 40percent of the waste that are sent tothe landfill.Nonetheless, construction remainsa critical component of nationaldevelopment. Projects whichcontributes to the socio-economicwell-being of a country, will requirean increase in construction activitiesnationwide – to build homes,commercial centres and infrastructure.To address this emerging concern, itis timely and highly appropriate forSoutheast Asia, as a region, to embarkon the green agenda in constructionto ensure that construction of builtenvironment is conducted in a waythat sustains the environment and itscapacity to nourish its inhabitants.Considering the rapid economicprogress experienced by countriesin Southeast Asia, it is very timely forCIDB and UBM Malaysia to bring theEcoBuild Conference and Exhibitionto the region this year. Pada majlistersebut, mereka menerima SijilKecekapan Kemahiran masing-masing.Daripada jumlah tersebut, 100 pelatihtelah ditaja oleh Yayasan FELDA didalam bidang kimpalan di bawah TheWelding Institute (TWI), manakalaIRDA telah memilih 60 orang pelatihuntuk menjadi perintis projekPinewood Iskandar Malaysia Studio.Selain daripada itu seramai 100 orangpelatih pula yang berpeluang menjalanilatihan dalam industri bersama 20syarikat kontraktor tempatan.Sejak penubuhan ABM WilayahSelatan pada 2001, ia telah berjayamengeluarkan lebih daripada 12,844orang pelatih berkemahiran dalamtred-tred pembinaan terpilih. Selainitu ABM Wilayah Selatan ini juga telahmelatih seramai 18,737 personel binaandi dalam pelbagai bidang.Sejak penubuhan ABMWilayah Selatan pada2001, ia telah berjayamengeluarkan lebihdaripada 12,844 orangpelatih berkemahirandalam tred-tredpembinaan terpilih.

That is howlong Dato’ Ng Kee Leen has been inthe construction business and intendsto stay that way for many more yearsto come.And for all his hard work, the industryrecently recognised him for his effortswhen he was named the recipient ofthe “Prominent Player Award” by theConstruction Industry DevelopmentBoard (CIDB).The annual award ceremony going onto its 12th year was held to recognisedindustry players who had contributedimmensely towards the constructionindustry throughout the years.“I was genuinely surprised to receivedthe award,” said Dato Ng at a glitzyceremony Malaysian ConstructionIndustry Excellence Awards (MCIEA)on March 29.“The construction industry has alwaysbeen a key partner of the nation’sgrowth. It contributes about 5 to 6 percent of the GDP, but its multiplyinglinkage to about 140 related subsectors including many SMEs, affectsup to 20 per cent of the country’seconomy. As a result this impact ishuge and critical to the health of theeconomy. The construction sectorhas also helped to raise our standardof living and quality of life. Withoutcapable contractors, our country willnot have the world class infrastructureand facilities that we see today,” headded.He received the recognition along withall his peers who won in various othercategories at the MCIEA 2012 whichwas presented by the Chief Secretaryof the Government of Malaysia, DatoSri Ali Hamsa held at the Kuala LumpurConvention Centre.Born in Taiping, Perak in 1956, Ngstarted his career in the constructionindustry as a site supervisor in 1977at Mudajaya Corp Bhd and was laterseconded to Gamuda Bhd, a subsidiaryof Mudajaya.From a site supervisor, Ng was laterpromoted to project manager, headof tender and budget department,project director in 1986 and laterheld the executive director post, adesignation which he still holds up tillthis very day.“Economic problems can be managedwith the right government policies. It isa fact that the Malaysian constructionindustry goes through up and downcycles like a Roller Coaster. Lastyear we had double-digit growth.However, from year 2003 to 2008, weexperienced an extreme 11 QuartersNegative Growth. As a result of this,many companies may be forced totake unnecessary risks in other marketsbecause of lack of work in Malaysia.“Also, in a bad down-cycle, valuableskills and experience are lost, asworkers move to other industrysectors. If we aim to support andpromote our own contractors to beamong the best in the world, we need toplan, finance and implement innovativeand practical projects on a managedschedule that will provide steady workfor the industry and other supportingindustries,” he said commenting on theindustry’s outlook.Ng also held many post in theconstruction business the most notablebeing the Master Builder Association ofMalaysia president from year 2008 till2010.Among his notable achievements include,his vision in solving the flood and trafficcongestion problems in Kuala Lumpurthat led him to the forefront of the studyinto the feasibility and constructability ofa dual-purpose tunnel in early part of year2000.Ng had subsequently led the SMARTproject team as the project director andoversaw its successful completion.Thedual-purpose concept behind the 9.7kmSMART Tunnel was a breakthrough intunnel engineering worldwide.In philosophy, Ng strongly believes thateducation is one of the cornerstones ofa progressive society and he strives toprovide valuable learning opportunitiesto the younger generation either throughhis personal capacity or through hisexecutive position in the group.He also believes that success never runsfar from hard work and perseverance andalways advises his staff to learn beyondwhat is required from their job scope tocontinuously expand their knowledge.

Rashid Ismail said thatthe talk is organised to enable fundmanagers to familiarised themselveswith the workings of the industryand make well-informed decisionsregarding investment in constructionrelated stocks or projects.In his presentation titled “An Update& Future Prospects for the MalaysianConstruction Industry”, Chief Executiveof CIDB, YBhg. Dato’ Sri Ir. This collaboration paved theway for all six ABMs to pursue morecollaborative training with multinationalbrand names, towards enhancing currentskills training modules.The training highlights common roofingproblems and how to solve them usingMonier Roofing System Components(RSC) and Dry Fix Solutions. Participantswere also exposed to Monier’s RainwaterHarvesting Solutions and Solar ThermalSolutions.On the second day of the training,participants had the opportunity to visitMonier’s factory in Sungai Petani to learnabout Elabana Tropical and Legacy TilesInstallations. They were also providedwith Monier’s RSC installation guide,which shows how to systematically repairroofs using the Cut tile clip, Compactroll,Radenshield and Easyflash.A total of 34 participants from 17companies attended the two-day training.Each participant received certificatesfrom Monier and CIDB.

CCI ini dilihat dapatmembantu penggiat industri seperti pemberi kontrak, perunding dankontraktor selain agensi kerajaan dalam membuat keputusan tepatmengenai unjuran kos kerja pembinaan dalam menjalankan projek.CCIjuga boleh dijadikan sumber rujukan dalam menghadapi risiko kerugianterutamanya ketika berunding dengan pemberi kontrak mengenaiperubahan harga kontrak terbabit.22MEI2013CIDB & EXIM BANKJalinan kerjasama antara Export Import (EXIM)Bank ini adalah sebagai inisiatif memperluaspasaran dalam bidang pembinaan di luarnegara. Kerjasama ini adalah sangat pentingdan peranan pembiaya kewangan seperti EXIMBank adalah sangat perlu dalam memastikanprojek pembinaan negara di luar negara dapatdilaksanakan dengan jayanya. Ini secara tidaklangsung memberi peluang kepada kontraktortempatan untuk menggunakan peluang yangsedia ada untuk meneroka pasaran kerja dalamsektor pembinaan yang bertapak di luar negara.26MAC2013CIDB & PERBADANAN TABUNGPEMBANGUNAN KEMAHIRAN (PTPK)CIDB memperuntukkan dana permulaan latihan sebanyak RM20juta sebagai pinjaman kepada pelatih kemahiran pembinaan.CIDB dan PTPK bersetuju bahawa dana tersebut diperuntukkankepada penyedia latihan yang berdaftar di bawah CIDB dan PTPKuntuk tujuan latihan kepada pelatih-pelatih sehingga memperolehpersijilan yang dikeluarkan oleh CIDB. CIDB dan PTPK secarabersama-sama, akan menjalankan pemantauan, pelaksanaan,dan pembiayaan kepada pelatih-pelatih yang diluluskan pinjamandalam program-program yang telah dipersetujui bersama.

Among others,CIDB will work closely with Bayer to develop trainingmodules for construction personnel in the areas ofgreen construction and affordable housing, leveragingon Bayer’s expertise in innovative products andtechnology for the construction sector.21FEB2013CIDB & MRT CORPORATIONCIDB and MRT will collaborate in Safety Induction Trainingfor some 12,000 MRT Project personnel, as well as assessthe Project’s adherence to safety and health requirementsthrough SHASSIC, a health and safety assessment tooldeveloped by CIDB. CIDB will also provide training in tradesrelevant to the MRT Project requirements and accreditconstruction personnel working on the MRT Project.14FEB2013CIDB & SURUHANJAYA PENCEGAHANRASUAH MALAYSIA (SPRM)CIDB menandatangani “Corporate Integrity Pledge(CIP)” sebagai salah satu usaha memastikansegala urusan berkaitan orang ramai dan penggiatindustri pembinaan dilaksanakan dengan penuhrasa tanggungjawab, telus dan berintegriti. The panel ofassessors comprises 29 individuals insenior management positions from21 construction-related organisationacross the industry.

As the foundercountry of REAAA, Malaysia hosts apermanent REAAA Secretariat basedin Shah Alam, Selangor. Among theactivities carried out by REAAA, theREAAA Conference and Exhibitionheld every four years remains the mostprestigious. Each conference is held inthe country of the presiding Presidentat the end of his term, to celebrate thesuccess of the term.In conjunction with ICW 2013, Malaysiahosted the 14th Conference in 2013, tocoincide with the end of term for Dato’Sri Ir. ICW SPECIAL EDITION 21The Big Boys Take onthe ChallengeThe Master Builders Associationof Malaysia (MBAM) has pulledtogether the big players inconstruction industry to discuss thevarious industry challenges at the5th Malaysian Construction IndustrySummit 2013 themed ‘ChallengesFacing the Construction Industry?Are We Ready?’, held in conjunctionwith the ICW2013. The Summit wasofficiated by the Ministry of WorksSecretary-General Datuk HimmatSingh.The Summit was held to provideinput to government agenciesto explore and provide practicalsolutions to address key andcritical issues in the industry andprovide improvement ideas. It isalso a platform for big players ofthe industry to analyse industryperformance with a view to findopportunities for growth, as wellas identify critical issues involvedin ensuring sustainable growthof the industry through properdevelopment strategies involvingboth government and privatesectors.MBAM President Mr. Matthew Teesaid that among the challengesfaced by the industry is the lackof skilled manpower to carry outimportant infrastructural projectsfor national development. During his premiership,Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad not onlyprovided Malaysia with world classinfrastructures but also instilled aparadigm shift that inspired projectmanagers and build the confidencethat they are able to take on the world.Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad acceptedhis award and gave his message ofappreciation and encouragementvia a recorded video to the audienceof the Symposium. Themed as“Benchmarking Project ManagementServices Against Global Standardsto Efficiently Deliver High ImpactProjects Driving Malaysia’s EconomicTransformation Programme (ETP)”, thesymposium main objectives were torevive interests in project management,and to promote ACPM as the leadingassociation for project managers inMalaysia. ICW SPECIAL EDITION 23Construction IndustryResearch AchievementInternational Conference(CIRAIC)Date : 25-26 March 2013 (Monday-Tuesday)Organised by: Construction Research Institute of Malaysia(CREAM)Theme as “Integrated SustainableVillage and Housing”, the conferenceis focusing on green building design,solar power, rainwater harvesting andsustainable materials. Issues on thesustainable design and slope failuresin Malaysia are the main subject inthe conference. The post-conferenceworkshop on the second day of theconference provides an avenue todiscuss and deliberate at length issuesand recommendations with regardsto sustainable construction and alsoto discuss strategic recommendationsfor sustainable hills slope developmentpolicies in Malaysia. CREAM is incollaboration with National HydraulicInstitute of Malaysia (NAHRIM), SolarEnergy Research Institute (SERI),Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia(UKM), Forest Research Institute ofMalaysia (FRIM) and Universiti PutraMalaysia (UPM) for Research andDevelopment (R&D) in developingconceptual housing units usingsandbag, timber and bamboo materialand that incorporate modern greentechnologies.Theme as “IntegratedSustainable Villageand Housing”, theconference is focusingon green buildingdesign, solar power,rainwater harvestingand sustainablematerials.Malaysian Construction IndustryTraining ExhibitionDate : 27-28 March 2013 (Wednesday-Thursday)Organised by: Construction Research Institute ofMalaysia (CREAM)More than 1000 attendance wereregistered at the career fair mostlyattracting students from schools,polytechnics and universities. Amongthe main activities at the exhibition hallwere demonstrations of constructionskills by Construction Academyof Malaysia (ABM), promotion onconstruction courses and careertalk by ABM Alumni. The WeldingInstitute (TWI) together with DecoCoatings Co. Ltd. had also participatedin the exhibitions and supported thepromotion of construction courses.Among the promoted constructioncourses were skills and trades inArchitectural Drafting, Electrical, HeavyMachinery Model, Scaffold Erection(Tubular System) and many more.Meanwhile, former students of ABMwere invited to share their experiencesand success journey throughouttheir graduation to the real field ofconstruction industry.
