FOREWORDThere are two chief sources of authority that governmatters treated of in this booklet: (l) the rubricsprinted in the front of every Altar Missal; (2) thedecrees of the Congregation of Sacred Rites (S. R. C.),which have the same authority as the rubrics. Thesedecrees are, as a rule, answers to rubrical questionssubmitted to the Congregation from all parts of theworld. They interpret or supplement the rubrics, andat times forbid, sanction, or tolerate customs; and theyallibw or disallow the use of certain materials for liturgicalpurposes.The sources mentioned above are commented on bywhat are known as approved authors, that is, men whohave made a study of the subject and whose writingshave the approval of the proper ecclesiastical authorities.Only books of this type are referred to in thefollowing pages. Some may wonder why there shouldbe so many references to rubrical and interpretativesources in a manual intended for altar societies. Therereally is no cause for wonderment, however. It is unthinkablethat a booklet of this kind, which treats ofmatters pertaining to the altar, should see the light ofday unless it were thoroughly documented so that a3
