Clay Target ShootingClay TargetShootingEighteen shootersfrom the QueenslandPolice Clay Target Club(QPCTC) travelled tothe nation’s capital inMarch 2013 to competein the AustralasianPolice and ServicesNational Skeet and TrapChampionships (theNationals). The Nationals, whichwere shot over three dayson 22, 23 and 24 March, attracted a field of morethan ninety shootersfrom most Australian states to contest the 2013event. The competition is conducted in two sections:a Police and Services section (for police, emergencyand military services) and a Civilian section and thisyear’s event saw many shooters in both groups. The QPCTC members, who include current andformer Police officers and staff members from acrossthe state and also a number of club sponsors, wereable to compete across the entire range of events inboth sections of the Nationals. The QPCTC is acommitted promoter of junior shooting throughoutQueensland and sponsors Junior High Gun eventsin at least 9 clubs across the state, to encourage andproperly train junior shooters. In the Nationals, a medal is awarded for eachgrade winner in both Police (and Services) andalso for the civilian shooters. In addition, a ‘sash’ isawarded to the best shooter in each event.7

Clay Target Cont..All the Nationals events were shot over 50 targets, with the exception of the last event (Champion ofChampions) which was shot out of a total of 60targets.The Queenslanders arrived in town a couple ofdays before the event so they could do a bit ofsightseeing and more importantly, visit the NationalPolice Memorial. For most of the team it wastheir first visit to this very important memorial andeveryone had a moment of quiet reflection at thatvery distinctive memorial. The team also visited the Australian War Memorialand were once again reminded of the ultimatesacrifice made by many Australians in past andcurrent conflicts. The Nationals got underway on Friday 22 Marchon a cool, windy and drizzly morning after aspectacular overnight electrical storm, with the firstevent being the ever challenging 50 targets of Skeet.Unfortunately the team didn’t start off too well (toomuch ‘sightseeing’ the previous night perhaps) andnone of the team made it to the winner’s podium.Nevertheless, Steve Steenstrup (Sgt, Dog Squad)scored the team’s best with 44/50.The second event saw the competitors back on theskeet fields for the difficult 25 pair skeet doubles.Like all skeet events, only one shot is allowed ateach target, but in doubles a shooter is presentedwith two targets each time. The varying winds andlight drizzle made it hard for all those present andlow scores were shot across the board, with very fewworth bragging about. However, Brian “Wingy”Murison (Sgt Rockhampton) started the medalcount for the team, collecting 2nd in C grade with arespectable 43/50.The first day of competition finished with the firsttrap event of the Nationals, the 50 target handicapwhich is shot, depending on a shooters grade, atanything from 15 to 25 metres back from the traphouse. Don Mabbutt (Insp. MSR) convincinglyout-shot the rest of the Queenslanders (and justabout everyone else) with a commanding display ofhandicap trap shooting under the windy conditions.Don finished off the event in a shoot off for overallsecond, beating local favourite and AFP officer, MattDwyer in the process.(Editor note – I think I know who wrote the article)9

Clay Target Cont..Day two, Saturday, dawned sunny and fine andstarted with the shooters lining up for thepopular 50 target Double Barrel, which is wherea ‘possible’ 50/50 is nearly always needed to becompetitive. Richard Wilde (AO2 Upper MtGravatt) got them all and lined up for the shootoff with 8 other shooters for the overall prize inthe Police and Services section. He gave a verygood account of himself and pulled through tosecure 2nd in AA grade. In B grade, team members Don Mabbutt andDean Baird (QFRS, Southport) both toppedthe Police and Services section and entered athree way shoot off for 1st and 2nd in the grade.Don was quickly out of contention, but Deanpersevered for an eventual well deserved 2ndplace.Jim Molloy (team sponsor, Cloncurry), shot avery respectably 49/50 in the Civilian section inA grade, but unfortunately was beaten in a threeway shoot off, after coming in behind the othertwo shooters. The Double Barrel event also forms the basis forthe highly contested Australian NationalPolice Trapshooting Team Championship, whichis a three shooter team event decided from prenominatedteams. The Queenslanders won thetrophy this year for the first time since 2010, withteam members Richard Wilde, Don Mabbutt andSteve Steenstrup beating all the other teams andcollecting the sashes and trophy in a well deservedand long overdue win for Queensland.50 targets of Single Barrel was the 2nd event of theday and this difficult match quickly sorted out theshooters with 1st in AA Grade going to Viv Nolan(retired, Toowoomba) after a closely contestedshoot off.Jim Molloy also hit the mark with 43/50 in Agrade, which put him into a 4 way shoot off forthe grade. Despite a good start, Jim didn’t last thedistance though and didn’t make it to the end.B grader Chris Lawson (Det.S/C, Kingaroy CIB),also made his way to the podium for 1st in B gradeafter shooting a very competitive 47/50 shot underthe very windy conditions encountered during theafternoon.Saturday afternoon’s presentations saw evenmore prizes going north of the border, with theQueenslanders winning all three prizes in the raffle,11

Clay Target Cont..which was completely unexpected as we all thoughtthat it would be rigged. Gary Brown (Sgt, Wondai)and Scott Prendergast (Det. Sgt, Kingaroy CIB)were particularly happy for the chance to collecttheir prizes as they were the only things they wouldwin over the whole three days. Fortunately forthem, Chris Lawson also won a raffle prize and wasable to show them the way to the podium to collecttheirs.A foggy Sunday morning greeted shooters for thefinal day of the Nationals with the fog burning offduring the first event, the 50 target Point Score. InPoints every missed target results in 3 points beingtaken off a shooters possible score of 150 and usinga second shot loses 1 point.Vic Tipman (ret. Gympie) shot well enough andthen contested a shoot off to come 2nd in AAgrade. The run of Queenslanders in shoot offsfor the event continued with Tim Misson (Sgt,Barcaldine) competing in a lengthy shoot off in Agrade with Tim eventually collecting a well deserved2nd in the grade. The final event of the Nationals, the 60 targetChampion of Champions, consists of 20 targetsDouble Barrel, 20 targets Single Barrel and20 targets Point Score, and is all shot from thechallenging distance of 18 metres from the traphouse. The windy conditions made it difficultfor many of the shooters, but even so a numberQueenslanders shot very well, starting with SteveSteenstrup who shot 97/100 to win the eventoutright and take the sash. Vic Tipman then madeit to the podium again for first in AA grade aftera exciting three way shoot off against Glen ‘Wal’Durrie (ret. Gympie) and another shooter after aninitial score of 96/100. Then Tim Misson cleanedup in A grade with an unbeaten 94/100 to completethe Queenslanders nearly total domination in thehigher grades of this event.Once again one of the Queenslanders, Steve Turner(Team sponsor, Sunshine Coast) picked up a prizedin the raffle and the four bottles of wine he won gotthe team on to a good start for the final night of‘sightseeing’.The annual team over fifties versus the under fifties(a politically incorrect concept if there ever wasone) saw the over fifties take the cup with a closebut decisive victory by less than less than half apercent.Glen ‘Wal’ Durre, who is in his seventies and hasbeen retired (and reckons he is half blind in oneeye) outshot everyone else in the team to wincoveted ‘QPCTC Queensland Team National HighGun’ shield, which is awarded for being the besttrap shooter in the Queensland team, which heachieved with his very impressive 375/400.A good time was had by all during the 6 days andfive nights we had in the ACT and Queanbeyanand everyone is looking forward to next year’sNationals which are being held in Bendigo, Victoriaand to getting together again to break a few targetsfor Queensland. Many thanks to our sponsors who make this eventpossible, Virgo Funeral Services, Ransen TimberCompany, Central Hotel Cloncurry, PlatinumProperties – Sunshine Coast, CWB Plumbing,Royal Hotel Childers, Bank of Queensland– Kingaroy, Jim Hayne Real Estate, FuneralTransport Services Australia, Queensland PoliceUnion of Employees, Queensland Police SportingAssociation, Kingaroy Freight Express, Astill’sElectrical and Ollies Mower Service.13

Table TennisIntroducing Table TennisBrad RantallClub PresidentThe Mighty Fighting Roosters Table Tennis ClubIn 2012 a question was posed over a few beers….what Olympic sport is still available to the averageJoe, a sport that doesn’t demand a high level of fitnessyet still required skill, patience, speed and tactics?Tough question I hear you think – well the answerwas Table Tennis!
