It isvibration-free, silent and virtually undetectable.Stirling AIP successIt was in 1988 that <strong>Kockums</strong> installed <strong>the</strong>world’s first AIP system for a conventional<strong>submarine</strong>. Poised forDevelopment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> custom-made conceptWe intend to make <strong>the</strong> next generation <strong>of</strong> <strong>submarine</strong>s an internationalproject through cooperation with potential client countries. Thisdemands a flexible design concept that meets <strong>the</strong> differing operationalrequirements <strong>of</strong> individual countries. Demands that future <strong>submarine</strong>sfunction as an integral part <strong>of</strong> large networks will also increase. Heretoo, <strong>Kockums</strong> has already taken a <strong>leading</strong> role in <strong>the</strong> field.Fur<strong>the</strong>r refinement <strong>of</strong> stealth <strong>technology</strong><strong>Kockums</strong> is devoting considerable resources to refining <strong>the</strong>stealth properties <strong>of</strong> <strong>submarine</strong>s, in collaboration with universitiesand o<strong>the</strong>r institutions. Hull shape, <strong>the</strong> materials used andacoustic damping are important aspects <strong>of</strong> this commitment.Radically new designs are under development. For example,a micro-sub launched and controlled by <strong>the</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r vessel,and which is extremely hard to detect, is being developed tosupplement <strong>the</strong> <strong>submarine</strong>’s own sensors.
