Toy steam TrainsFrom the height of the age of steam these marvellous 1930s Lines Brothers steam engines come in small, mediumand large and were the toy of choice of every boy of the time. <strong>The</strong>y are of wood construction with the original redand black livery of the LMS ( London Midland and Scottish) Railway which ran non-stop trains to Glasgow to rivalLNER (London North East Railway)’s Flying Scotsman train to Edinburgh. <strong>The</strong>se trains are roughly based on thePrincess Coronation class of locomotive, which held the world speed record of 114 mph in 1937. <strong>The</strong> largest of thethree trains still retains its original whistle Line Brothers eventually became Triang. Cat and FishA lovely, amusing large needlework of a naughty tabby cat eyeing up two veryidentifiable mackerels. It is in its original pollard oak frame and is inscribed on theback “used to hang in the nursery at <strong>The</strong> Lodge Hamondsworth” which is a lovelyGeorgian house still in existence. Carpenter’s BenchThis piece sums up what is best about vernacularfurniture. <strong>The</strong> original blue painted base is ofwedge and brace construction using chamfereduprights with a shelf between the stretchers. Veryuseful for wine bottles and such like! <strong>The</strong> chunkytop has a wonderful warm colour and the wholeis constructed of beech, oak and pine and wouldmake a fabulous serving table. Epsom Derby Day Painted ScreenA very decorative four-fold screen, now hung as a painting, of an Edwardian day at the races,based on Derby day. This colourful piece is full of activity, the horses and jockeys are flat out,the place is packed with race-goers, whilst in the foreground a pickpocket is at work. <strong>The</strong> freeflowing sketchy style of the painter gives a great sense of movement. On the left hand sideof the screen is a tiered stand very similar to that designed by E. W Trendall circa 1830 forEpsom racecourse. He studied art under F.F.May and hisexhibitions included the RA, Société des Artistes Français, RBA, ROI, the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and Museum, Foyles Gallery and the Brighton and Worthing ArtGalleries in Sussex. It has an appealing unsophisticated quality with inaccuracies of scale andperspective associated with this genre. In its original faux rosewood frame. American Rag RugA 1930’s American folk art rag rug of flying ducks. Rag rug methods were brought to theshores of North America with immigrants to the new world and they have always been thespecialty of women living in the country or on the frontier. From about 1890 to 1910, ragrugs experienced a period of popularity, influenced by the "Arts and Crafts" movement.With the coming of World War I and the "Roaring Twenties", interest in traditional rugmaking waned, but during the Depression of the 1930's interest in rag rug making gainedagain. Designs for these rugs were often inspired by the maker's natural environment andinclude animals, buildings, flowers, and country scenes such as this one. Born in Kilburn, North Yorkshire in 1876, RobertThompson trained in his father’s cabinet making firm, which he eventuallytook over. In 1919, he undertook his first major commission from FatherPaul Neville of Ampleforth. His trademark mouse first appeared in 1920and was modified in 1930 to remove the front legs, which kept breakingoff. Right<strong>The</strong> Guards and Lessons ofthe Highland BroadswordA Rowlandson print dated Jan 20. 1799 and titled ‘<strong>The</strong> Guards and Lessonsof the Highland Broadsword’ and is an instruction manual on the techniquesof broadsword use. Prisoner of WarDomino BoxAn outstanding domino box containing a bone dominoset and decorated with twelve small painted panels underglass. <strong>The</strong> exquisite paintings on the top of the box showan English couple of the time, the man in a bicorn hat anda red coat to show his officer status while his wife has ahat with ostrich feathers and a high waisted dress typicalof the Regency period. Above two floral urns are depicteda couple from the classical past,perhaps Anthony and Cleopatra. <strong>The</strong>three panels to each side portrayclassical idylls with churchesand castles, urns of flowers andlandscapes all surrounded by bonedecoration. <strong>The</strong>se pieces were madeby French prisoners of war duringthe Napoleonic period to sell to theBritish market. Art Deco ArmchairHow cool is this Art Deco armchair covered in gloriously wornleather, with a wonderful laid-back shape. French, circa 1930.Miniature Walnut Kneehole DeskAn early 18th century Queen Anne walnut kneehole desk, boxwood strung.This piece was probably a cabinetmaker’s model to show clients whathe could make. It is constructed of thick saw cut veneers, which wouldindicate early veneer work. This rare example has huge charm and theattention to detail even includes a pull out drawer above the cupboard in thekneehole. Both paintings signed ‘Ryan’. Ryanwas born in Hampstead in 1920; his childhood was dividedbetween the family homes of Hintlesham Hall in Suffolk, andVilla Santa Lucia at Cagnes-sur-Mer. Both his parents werepainters, and his father, Vivian Ryan, who was deaf anddumb, particularly encouraged him. After Eton, he trainedbriefly as an architect before joining the Slade during itswartime evacuation in Oxford. His first studio in Tite Streetwas shared with Augustus John's son Edwin. Ryan wastaken up by Rex Nan Kivell at the Redfern Gallery, whogave him his first exhibition in 1943; four more followedduring the next decade. He painted landscapes of Cornwall,France and later Suffolk rendered in vivid colour, with free,expressive brush strokes. Still-lifes however provided hisfavourite subjects (he wrote a short handbook on still-lifepainting) in particular of oysters, crayfish, herrings, seafood,and fruit. <strong>The</strong>se he showed regularly with the London Groupand at the Royal Academy's Summer Exhibitions. He wasgiven exhibitions at the Minories in Colchester in 1964 and1985 and two shows under the auspices of the NationalTrust, "A Kettle of Fish" at Sutton House in London in1994 and "Four Seasons" at Petworth the following year,introducing him to a new audience. Although his work wasbought by the Tate Gallery and by public museums abroad,much of the best remains in private hands. English, circa1960.


Valentine ‘Myheart it flies toyou my love’This is a rare early Valentine dated Feb 22.1822 and is a reply, presumably to a Valentinefrom a lover received on Feb 14th. On thefront is a captivating painting of a girl sittingon a rustic chair wearing a delightful spottydress, blushing as she waves her heart on astring. <strong>The</strong> chair looks to be constructed offound garden timber so popular in Regencytimes. <strong>The</strong> whole is liberally decorated withhearts on both sides. On the back it reads:‘Dear Sir I read your lines with pleasure,Accept this trifle that I send, I am a lover anda friend, <strong>The</strong> ring is round and has no end, Sois my love to you my friend, Your charmingbright eyes have my heart pierced, I spend theday in sighs, Some pity pray my pain impart,Or your true lover dies, My tears they fall andon your name, A thousand times I call, Yourheart to love I pray incline, And save yourfaithful Valentine, I am dear Sir your sincerelover ALC’.<strong>The</strong> name of the recipient is no longer legible,but the address is ‘Cautley near Beckside’which is in the Lake District and is famous forthe highest waterfall in England. It was postedfirst class as the instruction reads ‘with speed’.This enchanting piece is in a painted oakdouble-sided frame. leftBarfleur EveningA charming picture of Barfleur harbourwith fishing vessels by Adrian Ryan(1920-19980 and a typical example ofhis work. He studied at the ArchitecturalAssociation (1938-39) and at the Slade(1939-40). He painted in Cornwall (1943-48), inFrance, where this painting comes from (1948-50) and Suffolk (1951-57). Following furtherexhibitions, the London Group (1942-43) and theR.A (from 1949) he held his first one-man exhibitionat the Redfern (1951). From 1950 he taught at theGoldsmith College of Art and other examples of hiswork can be seen at the Tate Gallery. English Noah’s ArkA hulled English painted Noah’s ark with Noah,his wife and 18 animals. This type of ark was madeby wounded soldiers from the 1st World War inworkshops designed to aid their recovery, and it isinscribed ‘WAR RELIEF TOY WORK’ on a shieldcontaining the dove of peace. Born in County Durham in 1938, Trowell studied at the SunderlandCollege of Art and won a scholarship to the Royal Academy Schools where he receivedthe Landseer Silver Medal for painting and the Bronze Medal for Drawing, as well as theSir James Knott travelling scholarship. <strong>The</strong> appeal of his landscapes lies in their spiritand vitality, and in the way they recreate the atmosphere, colour and light.
