It paid off, as SaintJoseph’s took home the 19th Annual Carole Weil Fall Classic. Adams pushed the Hawks to carry over thesuccess into the spring, and SJU responded, finishing fifth in the A-10 with an 11-9 mark, including winsover all but one conference opponent.Working directly with the pitching staff, Adams turned the Hawks’ bullpen into one of the most dominantpitching staffs in the conference last year, as the team finished second in ERA (2.04) and walked thefewest batters among any staff. Adams honed Dani Gonzales into the team ace, as Gonzales collected acareer-best 12 wins, 144 strikeouts, a 1.64 ERA and earned A-10 Second Team All-Conference honors.Adams’ coaching ability shined elsewhere in 2008, as it marked the fourth time in program history thatthree SJU student-athletes earned All-Conference honors, as Brooke Darreff and Erika Rosenwinkel werenamed First Team All-Conference. Darreff would also go on to earn A-10 Player of the Year and All-Regionhonors and finish in the top-five nationally in batting average, while Rosenwinkel led the nation in doubles.Named the seventh head coach in Hawks’ softball history in the fall of 2006, Adams guided a youthfulsquad that started eight underclassmen to a 13-25 mark in 2007. After starting the season slowly – going2-11 – Adams helped transform Saint Joseph’s into a late-season contender as SJU finished the year winning11 of its last 25 games, including a 6-4 mark at home. As a team, Saint Joseph’s ranked among theAtlantic 10 leaders in triples, fewest runs allowed and opponent batting average, with the pitching staff finishingatop the A-10 with the fewest walks allowed.A familiar face around the Atlantic 10, Adams came to Saint Joseph's in 2007 after spending the previousseason at Fordham. In her lone season with the Rams as an assistant coach, Adams helped them toa 37-23 overall record, a 13-5 finish in the Atlantic 10 and a berth in the conference tournament. She helpedFordham finish fourth in the A-10 in earned run average (3.05) and second in strikeouts (322). Adams, who served as a volunteer assistantat Fordham in 2006, was named full-time assistant coach in June.Prior to joining the Rams, Adams spent nine months helping establish the expansion Philadelphia Force of the National Pro FastpitchLeague. Serving as assistant coach and director of player personnel, Adams assisted in player development, contract negotiations and leadingcamp instructions.A native of Allentown, Pa., Adams began her Division I coaching career as an assistantcoach at city rival Temple University from 1998 to 2005. Working with the Owls, shehelped them to a 175-208 overall record and a 76-54 mark in the A-10 over eight seasons. From 2000-04, Temple advanced to five straight Atlantic 10 Tournaments, winningthe 2004 Atlantic 10 Championship and earning the program's first ever berth in theNCAA Tournament. That same season, Adams coached pitcher Kim Watkins to A-10Pitcher of the Year, A-10 First Team and All-Mid-Atlantic Region honors.A 1989 graduate of Kutztown University, Adams returned to her alma mater for athree-year stint as an assistant coach. From 1995-97, Adams saw the Golden Bearscompile a 96-54 overall record, and a 52-20 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conferencemark.Adams began her coaching career as head coach at Salisbury High School (1992-94), before taking an assistant’s position at Allentown College (1994-95). She also spentnine years coaching the Lehigh Valley Renegades, helping them collect six PennsylvaniaASA State Championships and eight berths in the ASA National Tournament.A letterwinner in softball, basketball and field hockey at William Allen High School, Adams went on to play softball at Clarion Universitybefore transferring to Kutztown University. 2008 YEAR IN REVIEWIt took just two seasons, but coaches Terri Adams and GerryMauro returned Saint Joseph’s to prominence this past year. With aberth in the Atlantic 10 Championship, three All-Conference selections,an All-Region player, and the A-10 Player of the Year, the 2008season proved the Hawks have landed back among the conference’selite. For the second straight year, Saint Joseph’s had a slow start toits season. After topping Troy in its season opener, the Hawksdropped nine straight during their rigorous trip to Florida, beforetopping Maine, 5-1, to end their trip.Returning to the Northeast, the Saint Joseph’s bats came alive, scoring a season-high 13 runs in the Hawks’ 13-5 victory at Rider.Following a week’s layoff, the Hawks opened the Atlantic 10 portionof their schedule versus St. Bonaventure. After dropping a heartbreaking10-inning 3-2 contest in the opener, Saint Joseph’s ralliedbehind junior Dani Gonzales for a 4-0 victory in the nightcap.Posting a 3-4 mark over its next seven games, Saint Joseph’sentered its contests with A-10 power Massachusetts trying to handthe Minutewomen their first conference loss of the season. Despitedropping both games, the Hawks proved they could hang with theconference's top team, losing just 1-0 and 4-1.The Hawks earned a split at Rhode Island to move to 8-17 overall, but more importantly to 4-6 in A-10 play. From there though,Saint Joseph’s won eight of its next nine, including sweeps of LaSalle and Temple and a win over Fordham, bringing SJU within reachof an A-10 Tournament berth at 9-6.Earning a split with George Washington, Saint Joseph’s spot in theconference tournament was all but assured heading into its regularseason finale at Charlotte. With a 3-1 win in the opener, the Hawksassured themselves of fifth place in the A-10 Championship the followingweek.Facing Fordham in the A-10 Tournament opener, Gonzales wasstellar on the mound for SJU, allowing just one run on four hits.Unfortunately for the Hawks, that lone run would stand up, sendingSJU to the loser’s bracket and a matchup with Saint Louis.Having split the regular-season series with the Billikens, SaintJoseph’s need a win to keep its season alive. And the Hawks did, thanks in part to another stellar pitching performance from Gonzalesand a three-RBI performance from junior Erika Rosenwinkel.Keeping their title hopes alive, the Hawks earned a rematch withFordham the next day. But again, the Rams proved a little too muchfor SJU, this time topping the Hawks 4-1 and ending a season thatsaw Saint Joseph’s emerge as one of the top teams in the Atlantic10.With the addition of a successful season for the team, severalHawks posted memorable individual years, headed by Atlantic 10Player of the Year and NFCA All-Mid Atlantic Region First Team memberBrooke Darreff. The sophomore posted a single-season record.461 batting average and finished ranked among the national leadersin four categories.
