It wasanother exciting meeting with cutting edgeresearch held in Columbus, OH. A highlight ofthe meeting was a change made to the Bylaws.Based on the changing composition of PediatricDepartments and involvement of mid levelproviders in pediatric research, we now includetwo new membership levels to be more inclusiveand to broaden our membership base:1) Affiliate Membership: This membership levelis designed for those with postgraduate degrees(Masters, PhD, etc.) who are actively involved inresearch and who meet criteria for fullmembership, but who are not faculty members.This would include nurse practitioners or othermid level providers involved in research.2) Provisional Membership: This membership,limited to a two year period, is offered to thosewho have applied for full membership, who areactively involved in research, but who do not yetmeet all criteria. This would include facultymembers who have just graduated from theirfellowships.The website, http://www.apsspr.org/Regional_Societies/MWSPR,is beingupdated to incorporate these changes. Speer was reappointed to the TexasDepartment of State Health Services NewbornScreening Advisory CommitteePediatrix Medical Group, HoustonMesfin Woldesenbet, Medical Director of theNICU at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital,visited his native country, Ethiopia, and was verydisturbed by the lack of basic standard neonatalcare. The neonatal mortality rate in Ethiopia is39/1000 live births as compared to 4/1000 in theUS and there are only 2 practicingneonatologists in Ethiopia. This inspired him tocreate Horn of Africa Neonatal DevelopmentServices (HANDS). HANDS has a very focusedgoal of upgrading the existing nurseries inEthiopia by exchanging experiences betweenthe medical professionals in the US with thosein Ethiopia. This will be achieved by providingmuch needed neonatal equipment andeducation. There are now11 NNPs working in Alaska. We now have 5perinatologists, with the recent additions ofcorrina Muller (Providence) and Jen Gotkin(ANMC).A multidisciplinary team, including Jack Jacob,Deb Sims, Grace Schmidt, and lynn Gallant,traveled to Paris earlier this year to present theirwork on “Eliminating Nosocomial BloodstreamInfections” at the International Forum on Qualityand Safety in Healthcare. They have alsoshared our work on sepsis in Hawaii and inwebinar format. If you would like moreinformation about this topic, please contact JackJacob.2012’s Neonatal Symposium series included:Jim Gray on “Optimizing Care Delivery in theNICU,” Tom Young on “NeonatalPharmacology,” and lou Halamek on“Simulation Training.” The Alaska NativeMedical Center (ANMC) also hosted a NeonatalSymposium, targeted for nursing and pediatricpractitioners throughout the state who care foror stabilize newborns.A new Mother-Baby Unit opened on October 6that Providence Alaska Medical center and the60-bed single patient room NICU is slated toopen in late March 2013. The new unit will havevastly expanded resources for parents, includingsleeping space in every room. ANMC is alsoexpanding its number of NICU beds from 8 to12; this new unit is scheduled to open inFebruary of 2013.On September 27th, the Alaska Department ofHealth and Social Services received theVirginia Apgar Prematurity Campaign Award forthe state’s reduction of preterm birth by 15.7%from 2009 to 2010.lily lou was promoted to Clinical Professor inthe WWAMI Medical Training program, throughthe Washington University School of Medicine.The Alaska chapter of the AAP completed aHealthy People 2010 project entitled “I Quit formy Baby’s Breath!” We developed a compellingimage for our campaign and produced posters,banners and buttons. We enlisted our chapterchampion for smoke-free homes to develop a 1-hour lecture on tobacco exposure and wedeveloped a 3-hour training module inMotivational Interviewing for NICU staff. Wehave reached 145 staff and provided 580 hoursof CEUs and we have touched 550 families. Ourmaterials are available for adaptation to anysite. The three level25III NICUs in the state went over 365 dayswithout a CLABSI in 2011-2012.Surabhi Jain joined the group as aneonatologist in July 2012.WASHINGTONUniversity of Washington and Seattle Children’sHospitalchristine Gleason has stepped down from herposition as Division Head. She is on sabbaticalin Paris, and will return to our division in June2013 to assume a new role in the division andDepartment of Pediatrics.linda Wallen stepped into the role of InterimHead of the Division of Neonatology while theDepartment of Pediatrics continues its searchfor a new Division Head.We are thrilled that Taylor Sawyer joined ourfaculty in July. Taylor’s interests are in medicaleducation, including the use of medicalsimulation to improve clinical skills and patientoutcomes. His scholarly focus is on the use ofsimulation for procedural and team training, anddefining optimal debriefing methodologies inmedical simulation. He is Associate Director ofthe University of Washington FellowshipTraining Program.In October, University of Washington Medicalcenter opened a new 47 bed, single roomNICU in the Montlake Tower. We are thrilled tobe in these spacious rooms that were speciallydesigned for our patients and families.Sunny Juul and Dennis Mayock are continuingtheir work on neonatal encephalopathy. SunnyJuul received an RO1 to study Biomarkers ofNeonatal Encephalopathy. In addition,Darbepoetin Administration in Newbornsundergoing Cooling for Encephalopathy(DANCE Study) was funded by The ThrasherFoundation. Investigators are MarianaBaserga, Joanna Beachy, Bob DiGeronimo,Brad Yoder, Bob Ward, Bob christensen,Robin Ohls, Dennis Mayock, Sunny Juul, andBill Walsh.Janna Patterson was funded by the ThrasherResearch Fund for her global health study,“Impact of HIV-1 Exposure and FeedingModality on Infant Humoral ImmuneResponses.”UTAHRobert lane, Division Chief of Neonatology,has accepted a position as the Chair ofPediatrics at the Medical College of Wisconsin.Dr. Lane will leave Utah in late January.
