It wasanother exciting meeting with cutting edgeresearch held in Columbus, OH. A highlight <strong>of</strong>the meeting was a change made to the Bylaws.Based on the changing composition <strong>of</strong> PediatricDepartments and involvement <strong>of</strong> mid levelproviders in pediatric research, we now includetwo new membership levels to be more inclusiveand to broaden our membership base:1) Affiliate Membership: This membership levelis designed for those with postgraduate degrees(Masters, PhD, etc.) who are actively involved inresearch and who meet criteria for fullmembership, but who are not faculty members.This would include nurse practitioners or othermid level providers involved in research.2) Provisional Membership: This membership,limited to a two year period, is <strong>of</strong>fered to thosewho have applied for full membership, who areactively involved in research, but who do not yetmeet all criteria. This would include facultymembers who have just graduated from theirfellowships.The website, http://www.apsspr.org/Regional_Societies/MWSPR,is beingupdated to incorporate these changes. Hetraveled to speak at the 4th InternationalSymposium <strong>of</strong> Neonatal Respiratory andIntensive Care at Shijiazhuang, Hubei Province,China in November 2012. Speer was reappointed to the TexasDepartment <strong>of</strong> State Health Services NewbornScreening Advisory CommitteePediatrix Medical Group, HoustonMesfin Woldesenbet, Medical Director <strong>of</strong> theNICU at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital,visited his native country, Ethiopia, and was verydisturbed by the lack <strong>of</strong> basic standard neonatalcare. The neonatal mortality rate in Ethiopia is39/1000 live births as compared to 4/1000 in theUS and there are only 2 practicingneonatologists in Ethiopia. This inspired him tocreate Horn <strong>of</strong> Africa Neonatal DevelopmentServices (HANDS). HANDS has a very focusedgoal <strong>of</strong> upgrading the existing nurseries inEthiopia by exchanging experiences betweenthe medical pr<strong>of</strong>essionals in the US with thosein Ethiopia. This will be achieved by providingmuch needed neonatal equipment andeducation.
