Let’s takea look at what happened of note.There was a presidential election this year, in case you hadn’t noticed, and someonenamed Mitt was defeated by someone named Barack. Whatever happened to regularnames like Millard, Zachary, Grover and Rutherford?Sadly, in May, Eugene Polley, the inventor of TV remote, passed away at age96. Apparently he was relaxing in his Barcalounger, when he slipped between thecushions and no one could find him for a week and a half. He was buried in a remotesection of his hometown cemetery.Cyclist and author Lance Armstrong finally admitted that he freely partook ofillegal doping. Not only was this an insult to the international sports community, butirate librarians and bookshop owners everywhere were burdened with moving all hisbooks from the non-fiction to the fiction section.Just recently, the British Royal Family unveiledthe official portrait of Princess Kate, causing many toquestion the choice of a black velvet background. Aspokesman for the Queen defended the painting, statingthat the Royals have always been huge fans of ‘The King.’Speaking of the Brits, everyone seems to be bonkersabout a show on PBS called ‘Downtown Arby’s’. What’s that all about?In December, it was reported that Hillary Clinton fainted and suffered a concussionand blood clot in the ensuing fall. Apparently, she paused in her hectic schedule longenough to look in the mirror and finally noticed her neck.Perhaps not coincidentally, Bill Clinton showed admirable bipartisanship afterthe second presidential debate by meeting with Mitt Romney, presumably to discussRomney’s binders full of women.During the Republican Convention in August, Clint Eastwood spoke to an emptychair supposedly occupied by an invisible President Obama. It has since beenrevealed that its occupant was actually the imaginary girlfriend of what’s-his-name,that crazy Notre Dame football player.In nearby Sandusky, during a drunken brawl, a man by the name of Scott Hallhad his eyebrow bitten off by another crazed man named Roger Oates. The classicheadline in the Sandusky Register was ‘Maneater: Hall bitten by Oates’.At the infamous Heart Attack Grill in Las Vegas last February, a patron took therestaurant’s name a little too seriously and suffered a myocardial infarction whilstchomping on a Triple Bypass Burger. The wait staff, dressed as nurses and doctors,were of little actual help and the EMTs had to be called. The man is said to berecovering. He was offered a complimentary dessert called Death By Chocolate, but hewisely declined.This year’s new plants are promising, as usual. Perennials include twoeverblooming Coreopsis, Crème Brulee, an improved Moonbeam, and Mercury Rising,a beautiful burgundy red. There is a new penstemon called Delft Blue Riding Hoodthat almost looks like a delphinium. There are two great new sedums from friendChris Hanson, Cherry Tart and Dazzleberry. Over on the annual side of things, wewill have several new colors of Waterfall begonias, a hit from last year. New coleusinclude Honeycrisp and Midnight Rambler. Colocasia Noble Gigante, a huge purpleelephant ear is looking good in the greenhouse. New veggies will include many newgreens and an array of heirloom peppers, including the lethal Trinidad Scorpion.Hey, we no longer have to worry about the Mayan apocalypse and we’re lookingforward to a truly great growing season.

A MAJOR PROBLEM WITH IMPATIENSYou may or may not have heard about the spread of Impatiens Downy Mildew. Thisis a serious fungal disease that is fatal to certain types of impatiens. It came fromEurope just recently and is sweeping the nation. For the gardening public, there is nochemical or biological cure at this time. Plant professionals can use several chemicalsthat will protect the plants, but these must be applied every two weeks. This is costly,both in time and money, and these chemicals are not available to the unlicensedpublic. Even if they were, why would you want to spray your impatiens every twoweeks with an expensive chemical? The disease looks like white fuzz on the undersideof the leaf and soon progresses to complete defoliation. Currently theyare popular, mostly because they can beused just about anywhere and provide ananchor of color and/or texture in bedsand containers. They shine as either thestars or the supporting players in gardencombos. Several years ago they changedthe name to Solenostemon, but in ablatant act of taxonomic defiance, werefuse to call them anything but Coleus.Our collection of named varieties is farbeyond the bounds of sanity at about 150,give or take 20. The sad thing is, peoplekeep bringing us new ones. Even sadderis the fact that we keep coming up withnew ones of our own. Recently, a fun newflower brand, Hort Couture, picked eightof our varieties to feature in their new lineof coleus distributed nationally. His latest‘major find’ is a vintage food blender. This gave Hermthe idea of a smoothie stand business. Whenever heand Mabel go to Key West, they always hit the smoothiestands and Herm figures that he could make a killingat summer events, especially Alex Fun Days and theJohnstown Fireman’s Festival, maybe even The GranvilleFourth of July. When it came down to choosing a menu,Herm decided he would make the kind of smoothies hewould want himself, flavors that were definitely out ofthe ordinary. His first concoction was The Chicken alaMode, fried chicken wings and ice cream. No worryabout the bones, the blender took care of that.
