In 2012, we reached aremarkable 93% live release rate, an astonishingstatistic when you consider that Heritage HumaneSociety is an open admission shelter. Last year,1273 animals were adopted, transferred to one ofour partner agencies, or returned to their owner.A graph you’ll see in this newsletter providesmore detailed information.92% of our funding comes from individuals andbusinesses in this community. Swimming was a part ofmy life in college and throughoutmy adult years I’ve participatedin various masters programs.Ever since I had my first child 3years ago, I’ve devoted myselfto new motherhood. This pastyear my girlfriend, Alicia Uhl,invited me to join in a 3-personrelay around Key West - 12 milesin total. I thought to myself thatthere’s no better motivator to getback in the water than to train fora 4 mile open-water swim. Sothat was that.A 4 mile swim is no small feat, soI figured that if I’m going to beputting in all this time and energyinto training, I might as well rollit into a benefit for something Ibelieve in. That is the programsof Heritage Humane Society andthe importance of spay/neuter.Adoptions are wonderful, but wewill never overcome the nation’shomeless pet epidemic throughadoptions alone. The only wayto solve this burden is addressingthe need for communities tojoin in spaying and neuteringcompanion animals.So I hope to convert every ounceof effort that goes into swimmingaround Key West on June 8th,2013, into pledges that willbe used to curb the homelesspet population in James CityCounty, Williamsburg and UpperYork County. Kelly’s volunteer service atHeritage Humane Society began in the summer of2010. Ever since, she’s been engaged in variousfacets of our mission and has expanded her skill setwith the handling of animals.Kelly wasn’t satisfiedwith walkingdogs or cuddlingcats. Instead,she commencedvolunteering in theearly morning hours,cleaning kennels andcages, side-by-sidewith staff members.This work, thoughgrueling, is essentialto providing thecleanest, safest, andhappiest environmentpossible for ourshelter pets.Kelly also wouldvolunteer twice amonth, assistingwith our low-costspay/neuter days,special events atwhich HeritageHumane Society provides essential vet services toour community at drastically reduced fees. Kellyassisted staff by making copies, greeting the public,and preparing Heritage Humane Society pets forthe services they would receive later that day. Notonly were her service hours helpful to staff, theywere essential for our organization, which providesresources to pets and their guardians within ourcommunity.Kelly quickly rose through the volunteer ranks toachieve Tier Two status, which affords her moreautonomy within the building. She regularly assistsat off-site adoption events which give our adoptablepets public exposure. During these events, Kellyhelps by handling pets, answering questions aboutour agency, and distributing literature describing themultiple programsour organizationoffers. Kelly alsovolunteers as acounselor to thenumerous childrenwho participate inour Animal Camp.Moreover, she oftenruns our volunteerorientation sessionsand mentors newvolunteers.During the summerof 2011, Kellyimplemented a pilotprogram that broughttogether dog trainingand at-risk youthcalled Teen Trainers.She successfullycoordinated theefforts of twononprofits and theCollege of William & Mary to make this programa success.Kelly’s maturity, creativity, and dedication has helpedcement Heritage Humane Society’s reputation as astand-out animal welfare organization in HamptonRoads. Some Dos andDon’ts When YouFind KittensIf you find young kittens without theirmother, it’s not safe to assume thatthey’ve been abandoned. Their mothermay be looking for food or scouting anew location for her litter. If you wantto help, simply observe the kittens andtheir mother from a distance. A feral orunder-socialized mother may be hidingif you are hovering too close to herkittens. Give momma a chance to doher job. Should the mother not return tothe litter for several hours, she may haverun into trouble and human interventionmay be in order.If safety or other factors require you tomove the litter, please keep these thingsin mind.Whenever possible, capture themother and her entire litter.If the mother is feral, allow herto care for her kittens as long aspossible before separating herfrom them.The ideal age for taking a litterfrom a feral mother is at about 5weeks of age. By that time, thekittens are old enough to surviveon their own but young enough tobe socialized for adoption.Don’t selectively remove thekittens, one or two kittens at atime. This may prompt the motherto hide the remaining kittenswhere they may not be found untilit is too late to render medicalintervention or to socialize them.Should you find yourself witha litter that truly has beenabandoned by their mother, it isvitally important that they receivespecific and constant care.Never bathe infant kittens. Theyshould be kept warm and dry atall times. Use a towel that’s beenwarmed in a clothes dryer, not aheating pad, which can quicklybecome hot enough to burnkittens’ tender skin.Never offer cow’s milk to a youngkitten. If the mother cat is notavailable, a formula supplementoffers them the best chance forsurvival.Don’t forget about Mom. Tryto trap her and have her spayed.Then she can be safely returnedto her habitat, eliminating thepossibility she will become abreeder. Remember, she could getpregnant again immediately aftergiving birth and she will go intoheat two weeks after deliveringher litter, if not sooner. Then thecycle starts all over again.You don’t need to go it alone.Seek advice before removingthe kittens from their currentlocation. Our staff and volunteersare ready to help, but it does taketime to arrange a foster home.Remember, a well formulated planwill increase each kitten’s chanceto have a healthy start in life andto find a permanent home.Kitten Season, You Say?Kittens are Adorable, but NEUTER is CUTERWhat comes to mind when you think of KittenSeason? Do you envision fluffy little felines,playfully spilling out of a designer basket to chase aball of yarn? If so, we need to talk.Consider this. Cats can begin mating as early as 4-5months of age and one unaltered cat can producean astonishing 420,000 felines in just seven years.Moreover, cats are induced ovulators so they needn’tbe in heat to get pregnant.Kitten Season is a cyclicalevent that spans severalmonths each year.Beginning in spring,peaking in summer,and continuing wellinto fall, Kitten Seasonis a very stressful timefor an animal welfareorganization. Becauseunwanted and unintendedlitters are the product ofstray cats and communityfelines that are not spayedor neutered, the number ofkittens entering shelters eachyear is astronomical.As you might imagine,animal shelters are stretchedto their limits any time ofthe year, thanks to spaceconstraints and limitedfinancial resources. Whenyou consider that duringKitten Season, 15-30felines can be broughtto our shelter eachday, overpopulation quickly reaches a crisis level.Each kitten that passes through our doors must beevaluated, stabilized, and entered into our system,which paves the way to adoption. Because youngkittens have underdeveloped immune systems,they must be moved into foster homes as quickly aspossible. This prevents illness and minimizes stressfor the litter as well as the mother. Often an influxof kittens, so playful and appealing, will upstage theadult cats that are in need of homes. This increasesthe length of time they will remain at theshelter and causes overcrowding.Please help us minimize the numberof kittens brought to the shelter eachyear by having your cats spayed orneutered. If you feed or contributeto the care of stray or communitycats in your neighborhood, please beproactive and ensure that those cats arealtered as well. If there is space in yourhome, please consider joining our FosterCare Network, which saves hundreds oflives each year.6SPRING 2013 • heritagehumanesociety.org

SUCCESS STORIESBonded PairLike any good couple, members of a bondedpair balances each other. In the shelterworld we frequently see this phenomenonwhen a pair of pets (typically cats), who’vespent the vast majority of their lives together,is surrendered. Separation can be emotionallydevastating for them. Pets, like people, oftenexperience a grieving period when they’reseparated from a longtime companion.Whenever possible, Heritage Humane Societytries to minimize emotional stress by keepingthe pair together in the shelter and in adoption.Benz and Beemer, who’d lived together formore than a decade, were surrendered due totheir guardian’s failing health. Immediately, weknew that these cats were special. They werefriendly, loving, and readily adapted to shelterlife. Staff quickly realized they were a bondedpair and housed them together to minimizestress.Although we try to re-home all of our residentsas quickly as possible, it can be challenging toplace a bonded pair. Not only does the adopterhave to be willing to take on two pets at once,but the adoption fee (and every other petexpense) is doubled.Fortunately, our dedicated volunteers andsupporters often are willing to cover theadoption fee so that a bonded pair can remaintogether. Thanks to their kindly assistance,Benz and Beemer quickly found a new homeand were adopted together.If you would like to sponsor a HeritageHumane Society pet, simply make a one-timeonline donation of $100 or more and state“Adoption Sponsor” in the special instructionsbox. Your gift will be applied to the pets mostin need of sponsorship and will facilitate theirtransition into a new home.Deputy DogOften, we cross paths with a pet whosepersonality poses challenges toplacement. Cotton, whose high energylevel made it difficult to live in a kennel, wasone such pet. His repeated jumps agitatedneighboring dogs and he did not present wellto potential adopters. Foster care and a planfor enrichment were his best options if he wasto find a permanent home.Cotton’s foster family integrated him into theirfamily routine which included their residentdog. As a part of enriching Cotton’s life,they began working with him on a treadmillwhich helped him burn off some extra energy.However, Cotton had his own ideas. Beforelong, he became bored with a stationary run.He learned that he could turn off the machineif he jumped up and hit the big red button.Smart boy. Traditional training classes werea snooze fest and at every adoption event,Cotton quickly tired of having strangers fawnover him.Then, six months later, opportunity knockedon Cotton’s door, for the Virginia State Policewere looking for dogs to enter their detectiontraining program. They were seekingintelligent, high-energy dogs that exhibited anabove average toy drive. We quickly set up ameeting between Cotton and the evaluator.He was quickly selected for the program andbegan a new chapter of his life as part of theState Police K9 Unit.Often, all a pet needs is an opportunity to findthe right fit for his or her personality.
