Francoise was just nine years old when she came to Canada with
her parents; all of her formal education was done in France.
Although she understood English quite well she was very selfconscious
of her accent and spoke French almost exclusively.
Before her marriage she worked for Mrs. Mitchell and at the
Duck Lake Hotel as a waitress.
She met Alexis Perillat who had taken a homestead southeast of
Duck Lake and they were married in January 1905.
When Francoise and Alexis were first married they lived in town
and in the spring went to live in Lumsden where Alexis was employed
on the railroad. In December of 1906 they purchased a farm which
had a comfortable house and a barn. A good well was also an asset.
Alexis was a good farmer and a good manager. By 1918 he had

partially paralyzed, many of the
farm decisions and physical work
were left to Francoise and the boys.
With the help from Marguerite
who was teaching school they
managed through the depression.
Alexis passed away in 1931.
In 1940 Francoise moved to
town to the house purchased in 1918.
She was very lonely at first until
some friends from La Plaine retired.
Francoise always had a lovely
garden and many flowers. She
knitted bedspreads and tablecloths
and many pairs of mitts.
In the 50's' a friend, Mrs.
Anna Perrin, came to live with
Francoise for a few years. Then
in the late 60's she went to live
with Marguerite in Winnipeg, always
returning for the summer holidays.
In 1974 she and Marguerite returned
home for good. Her health was
faillng by then She passed away

enable the children to go to
school. Francoise, being very
busy with cooking, washing,
mending and household chores on
the farm, a housekeeper, Mrs.
Marie Rose Ouellette, was hired
to look after the children in
town. Most weekends they came
home for milk, eggs, meat and
other necessities from the farm.
When they were older, the
children drove a team of mules to
school and the house in town was
rented out.
In 1926 a large house with a
full basement was built on the
farm. Alexis enjoyed auction
sales, visiting and playing cards
with family and friends. After a
severe stroke in 1929 left him

Marguerite started her teaching career at the La Plaine School
and continued teaching for many years in Saskatchewan and Manitoba,
After retiring in Duck Lake in 1974 she became a good gardener; she
loved growing flowers inside and out. She spent many hours working
in her yard.
Marguerite loved to work and was never afraid to try new
recipes. She made many pots of soup and often brought some to
family and friends who were ill,
She devoted her life to the education of children, even after
retiring. She was always ready to give a helping hand. She spent
several years looking after her mother and went to the Rosthern
Hospital every day of the last four months of her mother's life
She had a special love for animals. especially her dog Lady and
her cat Mimi. She and Lady enjoyed many long walks together

visiting Northern B.C., Vancouver, Northern Alberta, Brooks,
Alberta, Lloydminster, Prince Albert and Osler. I enjoyed a trip to
Medugorje, Yugoslavia, Denver and Montreal as well. Hoping I may
keep it up.

Edouard & Cecile were farmers in the Rosthern area where the1r
ch1ldren were born.
They moved to Duck Lake 1n 1944 where they were owners in
partnership of a general store. They sold their share to Ferdinand
Lanovaz and ran their own business of trucking, gravel and
escavation with their son, Robert. Robert died accidently in a car
crash in 1959. Ed and Cecile were in business until the seventies.
They retired to Kelowna, B.C. where he died in 1982. Cecile moved
to Montreal to reside with her daughter Lynne. Cecile's hobby is
knitting and crocheting slippers, afghan, shawls and crafts for
seniors homes and the underprivileged.
She is loved by all around her for her originality and beauty
of all she creates and produces with her own two little hands.

In 1972 we started travelling to Europe, all across Canada, the
North West Territories and United States.
In 1978 we built our retirement home in Duck Lake where I still
reside. Pierre passed away in 1992 after a long illness.
I enjoy life, travelling, camping, fishing, doing crafts and
card playing along with volunteer work. I have taken part in many
community projects. In 1992 I was truly honoured to receive the
Lion's "Citizen of the Year" award.
The highlights for me are having the children, grandchildren
and great grandchildren get togethers. As of now we are a family of
thirty-nine.

PaUl's first career choice was always farming. After working
in partnership with his father for a few years, Paul purchased land
one mile north and east of the home farm and began establishing his
own mixed farming operation. All the buildings and miles of fence
were erected over a period of several years in the early seventies,
and we continue adding buildings and corrals as time goes on.
Paul has been active in sports including fastball, curling, old
time hockey and downhill skiing--interests which both sons have in
common. They also share Paul's love of agriculture and are
presently enrolled at the University of Saskatchewan in the College
of Agriculture. Colin will receive his Bachelor of Arts in
Agriculture in May 1996. Brian has a small herd of purebred
Limousin cattle and enjoys working with them at home, as well as
attending sales and shows.
I have not been employed as a veterinarian for many years but

In 1962 I left Duck Lake for St. Hyacinthe, Quebec joining the
Order of the Sisters of Presentation of Mary. Three years later I
started my nurses training at St. Boniface General Hospital. It was
there in 1967 that I changed my religious to secular life.
My cousin, Lillian Perillat was working in Winnipeg and she
decided that I needed a social life. . so I went on a blind date
to the Armed Forces Base thus meeting my future husband.
Gerry Gore-Langton, born in Vancouver, lived in Victoria for
eighteen years and joined the Armed Forces in 1965.
We were married in 1968 and within six months we were
transferred to Soest W. Germany. We made the most of our stay
there, travelling to many countries. We have two daughters, Chantal
and Corina, both born in Germany. It was interesting that we had tc
file citizenship papers for the girls when we returned to Canada
In 1973 we were transferred to Chilliwack, I returned to work
on a casual basis at first. When we bought our small farm in
Rosedale I left the farming to Gerry and went to work fulltime at
the Chilliwack General Hospital. Our life was busy with family
work and pastimes such as camping and the 4H movement
We now live in Sardis. Gerry works at the Oil and Lube Bay fox
the Esso Company and I'm still employed at the hospital

Andre, the youngest son of Pierre and Ida Perillat, graduated
from Stobart High School and then attended the University of
Saskatchewan. He returned home to work with his father and in 1974
started purchasing the family farm. He has been a successful mixed
farmer every since.
Since our marriage in 1984, Andre and I have been busy with the
farm but mostly raising our four children. We are also very active
in various community organizations such as the Duck Lake Lions Club,
Duck Lake Historical Museum, and the Duck Lake History Book
Committee for Andre and myself, the Duck Lake Murals Board, Duck
Lake French Cultural Association, Duck Lake French Preschool and the
Church Music Ministry. Andre and I also enjoy collecting antiques
and collectibles.
Life on the farm has its ups and downs but in our opinion there
is no greater place to live and raise a family.

Philippe Turbide
The youngest of a family of six, I was born in 1922 in a log
house some five miles southeast of Duck Lake. My earliest
recollections are of my mother making soap, scrubbing on her knees
the rough wooden floor, warning me when she was baking bread not to
jump near the stove, and of my sister Marguerite holding me by the
ear, a wash cloth in her hand, of my yelling in simulated pain and
of my mother scolding my sister for hurting me.
The first three years of my schooling was in Duck Lake during
which time due either to distance, bad weather or a chronic earache
I was not always present. For grades 4 to 6 I attended La Plaine
School where Marguerite was the teacher. We lived, except for the
weekends, in the rooms above the school ..
Thanks to my sister Marguerite I was at 14 sent to St. Peter's
College in Muenster and then to Normal School in Saskatoon.
After one year of teaching in Millerdale School (near
Kerrobert) I decided to go to university. working during the summers
at whatever I could find--one summer on a farm stooking at $4.00 a
day, another summer on the railway near Maidstone and another summer
on the Alaska Highway as a kitchen help for the American army.
On graduation from University of Saskatchewan I taught again
for one year in Fernie. B.C., and for one year in Mission, B.C. It
was there, towards the end of the school year that I decided to buy
a car-load of third-rate lumber {the entire car-load including the
transportation cost me $700.00 which was half of my yearly pay as a
teacher). This lumber I unloaded in July on an empty lot where the
present D & H Lumber Yard now stands (I had called it the Service
Lumber Yards) and immediately began to build a granary which before
it was completed I was able to sell for $100.00--the down payment
paid for the shingles to cover the roof. The cuttings were used to

I have been working in the family business for over twenty
years now. I started working part-time while still a student at
Concordia University, then full-time after I graduated with a B.A.
in History.
I am married to Philippe Turbide who is also in the art field.
In addition to his art gallery, he has recently expanded to include
antique furniture and jewelry. We have two children: Jean­
Franc;ois, age 11 and Catherine, age 8 and a half.
Since taking time off when the children were little, I have
been working full-time with my parents, look1ng after sales and
purchasing.
We live in Montreal West, in the house in which I was born My
parents have moved to a larger house over ten years age to
accommodate their large collection of books and records
