HAPPY BIRTHDAY DON! 100 YEARS ON 29 JULY
Don Alexander was born on 29 July 1909 at
Pentone Farm situated on the Nanga Brook
Road in a small dirt floored hut in where his
parents, Ernest Bloomfield Alexander a farm
labourer and Annie Mary Alexander (nee
Burley), lived with their family. He beat the
midwife that Ernest had gone for by arriving
while she was hurrying to the farm.
In the next year 1910 his
parents purchased a small
holding in Roberts Road
Hamel. The home here wasn’t
much bigger but it sheltered
the family. Ernest worked his
holding and also continued to
work for farmers in the
Waroona district and as Don
grew older he began to go with
his father to build many of the
fences in the area and clearing
properties with only a horse, dray, pick and
shovel. His three brothers and sister were
in school at Hamel.
In 1916 at the age of seven he began his
schooling at the Hamel School leaving in
1923. He continued with correspondence
schooling for two years whilst working in the
area. In about 1925 he was apprenticed to
the Forestry Department moving to a
number of areas including Mundaring Weir
Forest where he helped in the planting of
the trees in the Museum Car Park. He also
worked in the forest in felling trees which
went to help keep the furnaces burning.
In 1932 he left the Forestry Department and
went potato growing in the Hamel area. In
1935 he joined Nestlés as they begun the
production of condensed milk, working there
until 1942 when he joined the RAAF as a
trainee Aircraft Engineer. His training took
place as Ascot Vale in Melbourne and he
was then posted to workshops
at Pearce, Kalgoorlie and
Darwin from where he often
flew as Flight Engineer on
Catalinas when there was a
shortage of flight crew. He was
demobbed Christmas 1946
and rejoined Nestlés in the
New Year. The next year saw
him working with Whittakers
Mills as a hand feller, later as
a circular saw bush feller and
then as a log hauler with a 35 hp tractor.
In 1955 as a recession began he took work
with the Narembeen Shire as a grader driver,
and then returned to Waroona the next year
to work at the Waroona Hotel as a barman
where he worked for the next eleven years.
He rejoined Nestles for a few years and was
finally with the Public Works Department as
a leading hand until he retired at 65 in 1974.
During all of these years Don played many
sports, including tennis and was a
foundation member of the Hamel Tennis
JUNE RAINFALL
June started with hope with light rain
over the first few days. Winter really
arrived in the final two weeks when
we were treated to high winds and rain
and more rain. A total of 199.0mm was
recorded in the gauge over 19 rainy
days. This is only 10.9mm short of
our annual June average of 209.9mm.
Total rainfall to date is 300.2mm - a
much healthier figure than the end of
last month.
Highest recorded rainfall for June was
537.5mm in 1945, a very wet year, and
lowest was 42.4 in 2006 - a very dry
year.

Our hall is in the process of getting a new
refreshed building. We are not sure
exactly how long this will take and as our
where our meeting will be held.
We would like to express our appreciation
We had a really good day out with the
Senior Citizens on 4 June. We caught a
ferry from Mandurah to lunch at the
Clansman in Yunderup. It was fun looking
at all the outstanding canal houses and
picking our favourite. We then decided it
would be too much housework and we
would keep our own homes. We also saw
a few dolphins which was exciting. In all
a great excursion and we are looking
forward to the next one.
THANK YOU
To the Editor:
While walking around the golf course this
autumn, I have noticed that it is starting
to present more like a golf course. In fact,
the golf course is improving every year as
the environment gradually transforms from
scrub to a golf course. It is important to
have nature reserves where the general
public can enjoy the flora and fauna, in
fact many exist in the Waroona Shire, it is
equally important that golfers can actually
enjoy playing golf on the golf course. It is
also important to note that the general
public are putting themselves at risk by
wandering around a perceived nature
strip, that’s why I don’t hit golf balls on the
nature strip near your home!
Pete Duncan
Ed: I muist apologise for not making clear
that the articles last month regarding the
golf club and cricket grounds were actually
letters to the editor. There was a lot of
verbal response to these letters but
unfortunately only one person took up his
pen.
SAVING ENERGY
Electricity Tariffs increased by 15% on 1 July.
Here are a few simple tips to help reduce
your power usage and you bill and help
prevent emissions from entering our
beautiful skies.
Set your air conditioning at 21 o in winter
and 24 o in summer. Each degree over
21 increases your usage by 20%. Use
jumpers, socks & leg warmers.
Turn down the thermostat on your fridge
in winter
Turn off your kitchen appliances at the
power point when they are not in use.
Make it a habit to turn lights off when
not using a room. Minimise your lighting
when watching TV. Turn your TV off at
the power point.
Use a senor light outside rather than
have a front light burning all night. The
cat, or dog, can see without a light.
CFL globes, although initially more
expensive to purchase, consume less
energy and last eight to ten times longer
than old style bulbs.
Turn off your computer monitor and
printer when not in use.
Remember if it is not switched on it won’t
cost you.
DREAMS.
I dream our life a million times
Like saying our prayers I know every line
I feel every kiss see every smile
Our trips I know every mile
I feel every touch, every caress
Our days together, our togetherness
I feel you are still by my side
June continues to be a busy month in more
ways than one. The building application for
the new secure wing has been lodged with
the Shire and Respite Care Manager Janet
Fiorenza is already developing a waiting list.
The $3,000,000 project will be a great boost
for aged care in both the Waroona District
and the Peel Region.
Another interesting scenario will be the
choice of name for the new wing and leading
choice at the moment is “Dilkara “, which in
aboriginal means rainbow, nominated by
Rhonda McNeill. Popular also are wildflower
names in keeping with the other. If a
sponsor comes forward with a substantial
contribution the new wing title may have to
reflect that input. Staff, family members
and the community are encouraged to
register their suggestions. If the works
construction schedule remains on track we
will be looking at occupancy in December
2010 or January 2011.
Sadly we have said farewell to three
residents in the last couple of weeks. Maria
Maiolo, our oldest resident, was the grand
age of 99.5 years and we offer deepest
sympathy to Lil and all the Maiolo family
members. Another resident Ben Vincent
bade farewell and his last rendition of
Amazing Grace the Friday night before he
passed away brought a tear to staff eyes.
NEWS FROM PAM CORKER
Ben was a resident for over eight years and
his contribution as Flag Marshall of the
Corker vegie patch will be sadly missed.
Sincere condolences to Tony and Barbara
and all family members including
grandchildren who were extremely close to
their pop. Elva Bunworth “Bunny” was
number three to say goodbye and again was
a long term resident for over nine years.
Bunny was her long standing nickname from
her Nulsen Haven Club days when an active
member at Yarloop many moons ago.
Condolences are again extended to Bernie,
Maxine, Kathleen and families on the sad
loss of Bunny who was a real character.
Care Manager Janet Fiorenza whose
palliative and aged care leadership is
second to none has arranged a debriefing
bereavement counselling session to allow
staff to come to terms with these losses.
Rooms have been quickly refurbished as
Pam Corker has a waiting list of over thirty
people. We welcome Thelma Folizanni who
has transferred from the Quambie Park Units
and Warren “Scruffy” Turner to Pam Corker
House as permanent residents.
The Quambie Park Community Bus has
been in demand as staff, friends and unit
residents have travelled to Harvey and
Bunbury to say a formal goodbye to Ben and
Bunny. Jo Weston the CACP Coordinator
showed her versatility when she held the fort
respects on Friday at Bunny’s funeral
service. Jo will be excited this week as she
and her staff take delivery of a new Getz
to service the clients. Community Care
needs are increasing on a weekly basis and
the respite room at Pam Corker has been
booked out till mid September.
Congratulations to Care Manager Janet
Fiorenza for being chosen as a state finalist
in the Excellence in Care Awards “Employee
Section” conducted by Aged and Community
Services WA. Janet was chosen in the final
three as one of nine nominees. The awards
ceremony was held in the Astral Room at
the Burswood Casino Complex and she was
well supported by having three Board
Members present to witness the
presentation ceremony compered by Trevor
Jenkins of ABC Sports fame. Chairman
Michael Walmsley,Vice Chairman Clare
Jones and Dr Geok Ong made up a table of
ten from Quambie Park Waroona. Even
though not chosen as the category winner
Janet was the winner in our eyes and an
excellent ambassador for Pam Corker
House Waroona on a state level.
Pam Corker House again has greatly
benefited from community donations and
Waroona Lions Club have come to the fore
with a donation to allow the home to
purchase two more Arjo Huntleigh Minuet
Hi/Lo Beds to meet the care needs of
residents and ensure care staff complete
their tasks in a safe working environment.
Lions club officials Grant Hewett and Larry
Scott recently handed over a cheque to
Chairman Michael Walmsley to cover the
cost of those purchases. Resident John
Hayden was involved in proceedings and
gave a first hand demonstration of how
effective the new equipment was. Thank you
TO MY MATE BEN:
I met a stranger who became my friend.
Could this friendship last?
That depends.
We knew one would go before the other.
So we treated one and other as a brother.
Well I survived the other
And I’m the one I know will suffer.
SCHOOLS TREE DAY – PLANTING AT PISCONERI PARK
The Shire of Waroona and the Staff of the
Waroona Landcare Centre are planning to
revegetate the open areas of Pisconeri Park.
“In recent years Pisconeri Park has been
overgrown with love grass and other weeds.
We are working to replace the weeds with
local native species to beautify the area and
encourage birds to return by providing
natural habitat within the town,” said Director
of Community Services, Steve Cleaver.
Two local school groups will be helping to
plant the seedlings on National Schools Tree
Day which this year falls on Friday the 31 st
July. Natural Resource Management Officer
at the Waroona Landcare Centre Colleen
Archibald explained how students love to get
out of the classroom and get their hands dirty
In May we read books by
Linda Fairstein. She is one
of America’s foremost legal
experts on crimes of
violence against women
and children and as a
criminal prosecutor for the
Manhattan District
Attorney’s Office during the 1970’s and early
1980’s she dealt with many high profile
cases. She began writing at this time and
later, when she had retired from the
Attorney’s Office, she was an expert
consultant on many television shows and
series. Her books draw on her many years
of experience.
Opinions on her books were varied, and
some members felt they had been padded
out to make the required number of pages
whilst others found that the books they had
read were well constructed and felt that she
knew her subject very well.
This month (June) we have been reading
novels by Val McDermid. One of her
numerous heroes(ines) is Clinical
Psychologist Dr Tony Hill, the lead character
of the television series “Wire in the Blood”.
She also writes about Lindsay Gordon a
More information about National Tree Day,
Australia’s biggest community tree planting
event which is co-ordinated by Planet Ark
can be found on the internet at
www.treeday.planetark.org/about/ Planting
native trees and shrubs makes a positive
difference to our environment while providing
an opportunity for schools to come together
under the umbrella of one event. Native
trees, shrubs and ground covers help to
provide food and shelter for our local wildlife
and will lead to an increase in natural
biodiversity.
For more information please call Steve
Cleaver at the Shire of Waroona 9733 7800
journalist and Kate Brannigan a private
investigator and there are a number of books
in each of these series.
McDermid grew up in a small town on the
east coast of Scotland in the heart of the
Fife Coalfield. At 17 she was one the
youngest undergraduates ever accepted to
read English at St Hilda’s College, Oxford.
She spent many years as a journalist and
ended her career as the Northern Bureau
Chief of a national Sunday tabloid. She
began writing novels at 21 without much
success and later turned the book into a play
which was adapted for television as “Like a
Happy Ending”. She then turned her hand
to crime novels and in 1987 wrote “Report
for Murder ”, which had some success. She
was then able to write fulltime and since then
she has had unqualified success.
She writes a well constructed plot, often
beginning with a minor occurrence which,
with many twists and turns, leads to a major
crime having been committed. Her lead
characters are easy to associate with and
the story telling simple to follow. All in all, a
good read.
Don’t forget to vaccinate your pet!
It is important to vaccinate your animals
regularly.
In the case of dog owners, we commonly
see the following frustrating scenario:
Owner comes in with a sick pup/ young
dog; our first question is: “Is this animal
fully vaccinated?” Answer: “Yeah, when
I got it at 8 weeks of age the breeder
said it was fully vaccinated, that lasts
forever, doesn’t it!” Unfortunately this
particular pup is unprotected because it
never had its full puppy vaccination
course! There is a lot of suffering going
on because of ignorance and slackness.
There is currently some discussion as
to how often to give annual boosters,
especially in cats, but current
recommendations are that annual
boosters are required once the primary
course has been established. Details of
specific vaccination programs and the
diseases they cover can be obtained
from your vet.
Reminder to all rabbit owners, rabbits
should be vaccinated to protect against
Calicivirus, at 3 months of age and given
an annual booster every year.
WAROONA VET CLINIC NEWS
JULY 2009 - Page 9
Feline Urinary Tract disease
Feline urinary tract disease (FLUTD) is
a condition were mineral salt crystallize
and begin to accumulate in the cat’s
urinary tract. When these crystals enter
the urethra they are quite irritating (sharp)
and may result in partial or complete
blockages. Thus the cat will start to show
discomfort during or immediately after
urinating. The urine may be blood tinged
and blockage of the urinary tract may
eventually prove fatal. FLUTD is life
threatening once complete urethral
obstruction occurs.
FLUTD can affect both male and female
cats it is more commonly seen in males
due to the narrower and longer urethral
passage. FLUTD can be a re-occurring
condition, but with the aid of preventative
diets the incidence of relapse can be
reduced.
Signs to alert you to FLUTD include
frequently urinating either in small
amounts or obvious straining and/or
blood in the urine. If you notice these
symptoms please contact a vet ASAP!
There is bad news for hoon drivers and
those who drive without a valid license as
the Road Traffic Amendment (Hoons) Bill
2009 is to be introduced in Parliament this
week.
South West MLC, Nigel Hallett said under
the new legislation, reckless driving will
be considered a hoon offence, with police
not having to establish a circumstance of
aggravation, such as racing, excessive
noise or burnouts. The period a vehicle
is impounded will also increase to 28 days
for a first hoon offence and to three
months for a second offence. On a third
and subsequent offence, a vehicle would
be confiscated and proceeds from its sale
would go to road safety projects. Vehicles
of little value would be crushed
“At the election we said we would toughen
the State’s hoon laws. This is exactly what
the State Government is doing. We need
to feel safe in our community. We will not
take a backwards step in ensuring that
people are responsible in our community
and on our roads,” said Mr Hallett. “While
Please be advised that a Clinic specialising in Reflexology is now operating for
Yarloop, Waroona, Harvey and surrounding districts.
For understanding, working on one part of the body (e.g. foot) has a direct effect
on another. The feet, hands, ears and face contain reflex points plus 7200 nerve endings that
travel to every part of the human body. By promoting precise pressure in specialised movements
the body is thus persuaded to biologically correct, to strengthen and reinforce itself to reach
balance, normalization and homeostasis.
WATCH OUT HOONS! WA SET TO HAVE THE NATION’S
TOUGHEST ANTI-HOON LAWS.
most drivers do the right thing and use
our roads responsibly, there are some who
continue to snub their nose at the law and
at the safety of others. My message to
them is that they will be caught and they
will lose their vehicle. People who
repeatedly drive recklessly put lives at risk
do not deserve to be on our roads.
“In light of recent events there will be
severe penalties for people who deface
or devalue a vehicle after being served
with a notice of intention to confiscate.
This will cover situations where a person
strips or damages their vehicle knowing it
is about to be impounded or confiscated.
These changes will not only focus on hoon
drivers but also on people driving without
a valid license. From July 1, if you are
found to be driving without a valid license
your car will be impounded on the spot
for 28 days,” said Mr Hallett.
The Government has set up a new
Demerit Point Hotline to enable people to
check their current demerit point status.
The hotline number is 1300 720 111.
SENIOR’S AWARDS OPEN
FOR NOMINATIONS
South West MLC Nigel Hallett has called
for nominations as part of the 2009
Western Australian Seniors Awards.
Mr Hallett said the awards were an
important way to recognise the valuable
contributions seniors made to the South
West in business, volunteering and
working with the community.
The winners will be announced at a gala
ceremony on October 25, 2009, to mark
the start of Seniors Week, where the
winner will be named 2009 Burswood WA
Senior of the Year.
Other individuals who have worked in a
paid or voluntary capacity to improve the
life of seniors can nominate for the
Westscheme Champion for Seniors
Award.
In addition, a group or organisation that
has developed policies, programs,
services and activities that allow seniors
to lead rich and satisfying lifestyles can
nominate for the Active Ageing Leadership
Award.
”Many seniors work selflessly for the
benefit of their local communities and it is
only fair they are recognised for these
valuable contributions,” Mr Hallett said.
Nomination forms are available by calling
6217 8400 or visiting the website http://
www.seniorscard.wa.gov.au
Nominations close at 5pm on Friday, July
31.
On Saturday 20 th June, Waroona Lions
hosted a free skin cancer screening clinic
conducted by the Lions Skin Cancer
Foundation. During the day 81
people went through the screening
van for a thorough examination
which revealed 25 people with
suspect skin lesions. 17 of these
had basal cell carcinomas, 3 had
squamous cells carcinomas, 4
were diagnosed with Bowen’s
disease and one presented with a
melanoma.
Although all those who had
appointments were considered to
be at risk due to a personal or family
history of skin lesions, the numbers
found to have problems reinforces
the message – if you have suspect
skin spots, get them checked out right away!
The Lions would like to thank their helpers
GARRETT BURNS OUT SOLAR REBATE - IMMEDIATELY!
It’s official. Canning homeowners will miss
out on the popular solar panel rebate.
Yesterday, without warning, Environment
Minister Peter Garrett caused chaos by
scrapping the $8,000 solar panel rebate -
effective immediately! Canning MP Don
Randall said it was a travesty that yesterday
was the last day local residents could lodge
applications for the rebate.
“The Government’s ill-considered decision
and shambolic management of the
announcement left local residents and solar
industry businesses frantically scrambling
to tie up applications in just a few hours that
were planned for the next month,” Mr
Randall said. “The program was to continue
until July 1 st 2009 before being replaced by
the Solar Credit Scheme. This is the third
system under Mr Garrett in a year. The
rebate has been changed, means-tested
and now axed completely. The Minister
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DON!
Don began playing golf in 1934 and has
played on all three golf courses. His
handicap was 22 at the age of 78. He held
many positions and won many trophies over
these years. He was also a founding
member of the Bowling Club and played for
many years until he rolled the first ball on
the new synthetic green earlier this year. He
also held many positions during these years.
He was a life member of both these clubs
as well as the Cricket Club.
In 1995 at the age of 86 he was the Waroona
Co-ordinator for the South West Games.
This year Don and his wife Kath, who has
been at his side and shared his sporting
career playing in all of these sports or
supported him in those she couldn’t and who
will be 98 this month, will celebrate their 72 nd
Wedding Anniversary. They will be
celebrating their birthdays with their three
children, seven grandchildren and thirteen
great grand children and many of their
extended family and friends.
Judy Alexander
claims to be clear and green, but here he is
scrapping an environmentally friendly
programme for simply being too popular and
successful. Solar suppliers have indicated
that the Solar Credit Scheme will see most
people get about half of what they would
have received under the Coalition’s rebate,
leaving them $4,000 to $4,500 worse off.
This decision just reinforces that the Labor
Government’s self proclaimed green
credentials are in complete tatters.
“Many Australians want to do their bit for the
environment, reduce the impact of climate
change and save some money at the same
time, but despite all its spin the Government
seems determined to make it as difficult as
possible. The Coalition Government
recognised the value of this programme to
both families and the environment. In the
2007-2008 Federal Budget the rebate was
doubled from $4,000 to $8,000.”
Mr Randall said his office had received
several calls today from Canning residents
who would miss out on the rebate and felt
“shafted” by the Government’s “sneaky
decision” to pull the plug on the rebate three
weeks early.
SPRINKLER BAN
Are you aware that a total sprinkler ban
is current for most of Western Australia
for the next two months. This applies to
both main and bore watering.
Check that your automatic watering
system is OFF.
Gift vouchers can create problems for
customers and store owners alike if the
store’s rules for using vouchers are not well
understood. It is important for consumers
to understand that there is no set format for
store gift vouchers and the rules will vary
from store to store.
Many impose a use-by-date, for example,
“This voucher is only valid until 31st December 2009”. This practice aims to
encourage gift recipients to redeem their
vouchers within a set time. However traders
also need to honour their timeframes.
Vouchers that are outstanding for long
periods present record keeping problems for
business and can add to business costs.
Vouchers presented after the use-by-date
may be rejected. Depending on individual
circumstances, some stores may agree to
honour it while others may honour vouchers
with a diminished value.
Some vouchers are imprinted with a
numbering system or bar code. This
provides a linked record and gives
consumers some protections in case of loss
or theft. Some small or independent stores
do not track their vouchers in this way. This
can present problems because it becomes
impossible to match purchaser to voucher
or be assured that vouchers being
redeemed were honestly obtained.
JULY 2009 - Page 17
UNDERSTANDING GIFT VOUCHERS
Gift recipients are not the actual purchaser
of the voucher and they cannot demand a
store exchange their voucher for cash. It is
the original purchaser of the voucher who is
the store’s customer and holder of a legally
binding “contract of sale”. This is why the
gift voucher recipient has limited rights. For
example, if you do not use the entire dollar
amount of the voucher then the store is not
obliged to give you the unspent portion in
cash. Instead, they might provide another
voucher.
To assist the smooth working of this form of
gift giving, stores are well advised to clearly
set out the conditions or terms of use on
their vouchers. Traders should include any
expiry date and have in place a reliable
system to track their vouchers. For both
purchasers and gift recipients, it is wise to
We’ve come to the end of Term 2 now and
we’re all wondering where the first half of
the year has gone! June 8th was our
Grandparents Day which was a lot of fun
for everyone. It was so nice to see the
grandparents and some great
grandparents there, having a lovely time
with their grandkids. They all had a
chance to do craft together, some getting
plates, cups and placemats to remember
the special day. It was lovely to see the
wonderful bond between the children and
their grandparents. Thank you to everyone
who came and hope you all had a lovely
time.
We now have Tiny Tots up and running
on Tuesday afternoons. This is a great
time for those with young babies up to 2
years old to come and spend time with
others who have children the same age.
FROM THE MAY COUNCIL MINUTES
subject to conditions including downsizing
the proposed shed.
A fruit packing shed in McClure Road, Hamel
was proposed. Council resolved to approve
the application with restrictions imposed on
truck movements, numbers of persons to be
employed at one time, installation of a septic
tank and other conditions.
Council resolved, with respect to a proposal
to establish a landscaping policy to endorse
the creation of a Draft Landscaping Policy
which is to be considered at a future
meeting.
A proposed amendment to a rural residential
development south of Weller Road
overlooking Lake Moyanup was tabled. The
modifications were adopted with conditions,
chat to who is going through the same
things you are. It’s also so beneficial for
your children and from experience these
groups can lead to great friendships which
last for years for you and your kids.
As we begin Term 3 we will be looking for
co-ordinators to help out at Tuesday
mornings sessions as well as anyone who
can be a back up for Monday and
Thursday. School holidays commence on
Monday 6th July so we will be closed for
a couple of weeks until school goes back.
It’s now that time of year when its hard to
come out because it’s so wet and dreary.
This is a good reason to come and play
with us. Why have your kids stuck inside
your own home when they could be at
Playgroup having a ball with their friends.
Hope to see you all next term. Have a
fun safe time over the holidays!
WHAT’S IN A NAME –
FOURACRE STREET
The Fouracre family are described as among
the earliest pioneers of the coastal area,
where they lived until around the 1870s.
John Fouracre built a Wayside Inn in 1854,
alongside the Old Coast Road near the
present day junction with Peppermint Grove
Road. On the opposite side of the road were
stockyards and barns which housed horses
kept for the Bunbury mail coach.
In 1871, following their move to the
Waroona/Hamel area, John purchased 2000
acres of land and the first homestead away
from the Old Coast Road was later
established.
His son Robert, the farmer of the family,
occupied ‘Drakesbrook’, the earliest farm in
the district, which was also a stage coach
stop.
Two of John’s daughters married, one
unmarried daughter was later murdered at
the Peppermint Grove property and the other
unmarried daughter lived with her brother
at ‘Drakesbrook’.
The past couple of years have seen
significant changes within the Waroona
Police sub-district.
Waroona is a growing region and the
demographics are constantly changing.
No longer is it a small country town with
“just locals”. There is now a far more
transient population and this coupled with
a growing desire for people to re-locate
south of the metropolitan area, brings with
it obvious policing challenges.
For the reporting period 01/07/2007 – 30/
06/2008, a total of 69 persons were
processed by summons or arrest for a total
of 94 charges within our sub-district.
For the same period 2008 – 2009 (up to
and including 22/06/2009), a total 167
persons were processed for a total of 301
charges, an increase of 142% and 220%
respectively.
This does not include juveniles either
required to appear before a Juvenile
Justice Team or subject to a formal or
informal caution.
The news is not all bad. Many would be
aware of our staff increase in August 2008
with the return of Travis Jenkinson to the
Police Service.
Certainly, the increase in the quoted
statistics can be in part attributed to the
increase in staffing levels. It has enabled
us to be more proactive in our policing
methods and conduct thorough and
complete investigations as the need
arises.
Significantly, Waroona’s burglary rate has
reduced 23% this reporting period which
includes a 43% reduction in residential
burglaries for the district.
Peel Police District Office has again
JULY 2009 - Page 19
WAROONA POLICE NEWS
MOVING FORWARD
recognised the need for additional staff
and is currently advertising to fill a newly
created position. The vacancy will,
hopefully, be filled in the very near future,
giving Waroona Police Station an
established strength of 6 full time officers.
In addition to the extra staff, a recent
station upgrade has seen an additional 42
square metres of office space, computers
and other resources allocated to the
station.
What does this mean to the community?
Obviously, greater coverage! Increased
staffing levels put more Police on the road
and no doubt many would have already
noticed the extended afternoon shift
coverage from Monday to Sunday. A
further increase in staffing levels will give
us the opportunity to again extend our
coverage and ensure the community is
policed with maximum benefit to all.
A recent initiative within the Peel District,
and as a result of co-operation between
neighbouring sub-districts, has seen the
commencement of a “night shift patrol”.
Notwithstanding the additional coverage
already mentioned, the Waroona
community now has access to an on road
Police vehicle from Wednesday to
Saturday until the very early hours of the
following morning. The night shift patrols
have already proved beneficial and the
message to the community is not to
“guess” whether police are available or
not.
Should you require Police assistance or if
you witness any suspicious activity, call
9733 1230 and your call will be answered.
Don’t wait until the next day, it’s generally
too late.
Waroona Demons Football
Club continues to make its
mark in all three grades in the
Alcoa Peel Football League
Competition.
Waroona League Squad, with a strong even
four quarter performance, defeated Pinjarra
by 42 points last Sunday to gain a handy
two game break at the top of the League
Premiership Ladder. In stormy difficult
conditions Waroona were led by skilful
Courtney Lakay, ruckman Andrew LeRoy
and utility player Matt Thomas. The
Demons defensive unit kept Pinjarra to a
miserly 1 goal, seven behinds for the whole
game. .Key defenders Ryan and Steele
Court are leading the way well supported
by former colt’s players Jackson Hiscock
and Chad Peters. Goalsneak Simon
Horner is always dangerous and colt “Fish”
Catalano enjoyed playing with the “Big
Boys” in the League Squad.
Waroona Reserves Playing Coach Jamie
Jovanovich and his Assistant Smoky
Dawson were delighted with the improved
showing by Waroona Reserves. They
defeated the previously unbeaten Pinjarra
Reserves Team by 14 points in difficult
conditions. Waroona held a handy lead at
the halfway mark but Pinjarra responded
with five goals in the third term with the aid
of the gale and held Waroona scoreless.
The Demons held their nerve with
experienced players Raymond Kohlman
and Marcus Jovanovich leading the way,
and Ruckman Rohan Lilly showed why he
will be a key asset to the League Squad
after returning from a serious leg injury .They
used the ball well and kicked five goals to
zero in the last term after trailing by sixteen
points at the last change. Waroona
Reserves are now on the edge of the five
and when they have a full complement of
players will make an impact on the final
series assuming they can win enough
games in the last seven rounds.
Waroona Colts continue to play strong
football and will be competition with
Rockingham for fifth spot. They were only
JULY 2009 - Page 21
seven points down against Pinjarra after
allowing a couple of easy late goals at half
time. Unfortunately they allowed second top
team Pinjarra Tigers to dictate terms in the
third term even though they came home
strongly. Ryan McKinley is the leading
goalscorer in the Colts competition and he
showed why in the recent Peel Cavaliers
fixture scoring six goals.
Peel defeated South West at Hands
Memorial Oval by 26 points on Friday 19th
June.It was back to back for the Peel Colts
team. The side was well drilled and coached
by Waroona Colts Coach Jasan Hysen. His
two assistant coaches were Ian Jack
(Pinjarra) and John Mason (Waroona).
Congratulations to all local players who
made the representative colts team and
Jackson Hiscock was named Captain. Other
players were Max Gardiner,Norman
Davis,Josh Derosa,Ariki Brown,Sean
Roberts and Ryan McKinley.All local
Waroona Colts players made a solid
contribution to an outstanding term
performance which shocked South West at
the skill, tenacity and spirit shown by the
Cavaliers.Seven players and two Coaches
is a great contribution by Waroona towards
the Peel Cavaliers achievements.
Waroona is also buzzing off the track and
the major raffle winner of a side of grain fed
beef was head trainer Rod Davis. Significant
funds were raised for the Club.
Not to be outdone the ladies sub committee
of Debbie, Kerry, Sheree and Lauren held a
meeting on Friday night to ensure
preparations are well in hand for the Red
and Black Ball in a couple of weeks. It will
allow players a chance to relax but gives
them only two days preparation against
South Mandurah which is now in second
spot after defeating Mandurah Mustangs by
five goals in a night fixture on Saturday night.
Season 2009 will provide some interesting
results in the last seven qualifying fixtures
before the Finals Series commences. With
a little luck and effort on the training track
Waroona should have teams in the finals in
all three grades.
WHATS HAPPENING WITH
TENNIS IN WAROONA?
Come and find out on
Friday 24 July.
The Waroona Tennis Club has
unfortunately in recent years been in
recess due to lack of numbers. The
committee has held off closing the club
altogether in the hope that ‘new’ interest
would be generated at some point and
the club could be resurrected.
We would like to invite interested players
to meet at the Waroona Recreation
Centre on Friday July 24th at 5.45 pm to
discuss the possibility of bringing Tennis
back to town. If enough interest/
attendance/committment is shown at
that meeting we will be able to continue
as a club.
If you are at all interested please come
along and share your ideas. If you would
like further information beforehand
please contact Janine Walmsley on
9733 3020. Look forward to seeing you
there!
Firstly on behalf of the Management
Committee and all the members I would like
to wish a very Happy Birthday to one of our
Life Members, Don Alexander, who turns
100 on July 29 th . Congratulations Don, we
are all very happy that you have reached
this momentous milestone in your life.
Everyone at the Club is very proud to be
associated with you and we hope you will
continue to enjoy many more years with us.
Our Club will be inviting Don and his family
to a birthday celebration closer to the date.
Anyone and everyone is welcome to join us
in celebrating Don’s achievement, please
contact the Club for further details.
Well it’s that time of the year when
Membership Renewals are due. Everyone
should have received their renewal forms,
but if by chance you haven’t
please contact the Club as
soon as possible. Fees have
remained the same for this
year and as always we have
the cheapest membership in
our league. Please try and pay
your renewals as soon as
possible. Reminders are costly
to the Club, and shouldn’t be
necessary.
Sunday morning scroungers
has taken off well. It starts at
9.30am and is over by
lunchtime. We have been
getting about 15 people each
week, so let’s hope this
continues. If this timeslot
remains popular then we will continue with
it throughout the summer. Thursdays is less
popular, but everyone is welcome, both
males and females.
Saturday Triples has started and will be run
alternatively between Yarloop and Waroona.
If you are interested in playing, your team
must be nominated by 7pm on the Friday
night. The competition is open to both males
and females and the teams can be any
combination.
BOWLING CLUB NEWS
Stalwart centenarian Don
JULY 2009 - Page 23
new season. After the heavy rains we have
still managed to play scroungers and also
tried a Twilight Triples. This worked well for
a few weeks, but the cold evenings just
became too cold for people to enjoy their
game, so we have cancelled it for the time
being.
The Bingo numbers have dropped off a little
since the cold weather kicked in, but we will
continue to run it whatever the numbers. We
still manage to get between 12 and 18, but
over 20 would provide better prizes for
everyone. If you haven’t been before, it is
eyes down at 7pm, so you need to get there
earlier to purchase your books and dobbers.
Coffee, tea & biscuits are served at half time
and the bar is open throughout the session.
Our Club is a family Club and several older
children who enjoy playing
bingo regularly attend and they
are more than welcome.
Our Friday Night meals and
raffles are still popular. The
menu is very diverse and all
meals are very reasonable.
The meals are provided as a
service to its members, but
visitors and guests are always
welcome. The kitchen opens at
about 5.45pm and closes at
7.30pm. There is a variety of
raffles, some of which carry
over to the next week, if
unsold, but others are drawn
on the night, the more sold the
more prizes we have.
We now regularly cater for family functions
from birthdays to anniversaries, weddings
to wakes. We do not have a set price. This
is worked out between you and the Club. If
you are a member the hiring of the Club is
free, but there is a cost for non members.
People may self cater if they wish, but there
is a cost in hiring the kitchen in addition to
the main hall. Many people have included a
game of bowls in their function. This can be
organised by the Club Staff. Just contact
the Club and anything can be organised for
you.
