Hands on mathematical activities, games, puzzles<br />

and problem-solving challenges. From teddies to<br />

teacups, giant dominoes, the SOMA cube, prime<br />

hopscotch and calculus countdown: this is maths<br />

but not as you know it... Organised by the<br />

<strong>University</strong>’s Millennium Mathematics Project and<br />

<strong>Cambridge</strong> Maths Circle.<br />

Ages 5+<br />

Maths <strong>of</strong> sport pentathlon<br />

Explore some <strong>of</strong> the maths hidden in the Olympic and Paralympic Games! Challenge yourself to<br />

complete the maths <strong>of</strong> sport pentathlon, a series <strong>of</strong> hands on mathematical activities focusing on<br />

Olympic and Paralympic sports and infrastructure. Plus you can find our free online resources on<br />

Maths and Sport at http://sport.maths.org<br />

How fast can Usain Bolt run?<br />

How could Usain Bolt improve his world 100 metres sprint record significantly without improving his<br />

speed? How fast should he be able to run? Pr<strong>of</strong>essor John Barrow FRS answers these and other<br />

questions in this talk, which also looks at the mechanics <strong>of</strong> sprinting and the effects <strong>of</strong> wind<br />

assistance, timing accuracy and altitude on sprint times.<br />
