Mark Elson, CantorCANTOR ELSONPhoto provided byClassic Photo and VideoEizehu Chacham? Halomeidmikol adam. Who is wise? The one who learns fromevery person. This very truestatement comes to us fromthe Mishnah, from the sectioncalled Pirkei Avot, and it is a teaching I have always felt tobe important and tried to follow. This past summer I was able to do something I’ve wantedto do for a great many years. I rode my motorcycle frommy home in Holland, PA out to Sturgis, SD for the BlackHills Motorcycle Rally. Riding through several states overthe course of a few very hot August days was really quiteexhilarating, except for that 18-wheeler in Iowa that got alittle too close. And since the Sturgis rally is attended bybetween 5 and 6 hundred thousand bikers every year, eventhough I was riding alone I had plenty of company on theroad. The scenery along the way was beautiful, from rollingfarmland to wide, flat prairie to the Black Hills and theBadlands of South Dakota. Riding through some of ournation’s beautiful parks, seeing Mount Rushmore, the CrazyHorse monument, Custer State Park with its roaming herdsof bison and wild donkeys, antelope and deer, the NeedlesHighway with its towering spires of rock, and the manybeautiful canyons carved by millions of years of erosionwas truly inspirational. One day I rode from my campsite outside Sturgis toWyoming to see Devil’s Tower, the famous monolithfamiliar to many of us from the movie, “Close Encountersof the Third Kind.” Riding over the crest of a hill whilestill several miles away and first seeing the Tower from adistance is thrilling, and it got even better as I got closer. There truly is something mystical about it, and that is why itis a sacred place to the Lakotah and other Black Hills tribes. After spending some time there I headed out on a two laneroad through tiny towns like Alva, WY, population 50, andAlladin, WY, population 15. At the Stone House Saloonon highway 34, really just an old abandoned homesteadfrom the 1800’s, next to which the owner of the ranch itsits on built a small bar, I found an interesting source ofwisdom. In a room of that empty, stone building, on whose wallsthousands of bikers have scrawled their names and the yearthey came through the place, sits a large sign. It is full ofproverbs about riding motorcycles, but more importantly, about life. Some are funny: “Catching a bee in your shirtat 70 mph can double your vocabulary.” “Only a bikertruly understands why a dog sticks its head out of a carwindow.” Others are inspirational: “Don’t ride so lateinto the night that you sleep through the sunrise,” in otherwords, stop and rest so you can appreciate the beauty inlife and the world. “Young riders pick a destination. Oldriders pick a direction,” in other words, It’s less importantwhere we end up, and more important how we make thejourney through life, how we deal with the bumps anddetours along the way, and for most people it takes manyyears of life experience to realize this truth. There are a great many more, but here are just two ofmy favorite bits of biker wisdom: “Riding faster thaneveryone else only guarantees you’ll ride alone,” anotherway of saying that to be truly human we need to be part ofa community, to be with and live among others with whomwe share a common bond. And we have an obligation torecognize that not everyone can move at the same speed, that we may need to slow down so they can catch up, orthat we might have to reach out a helping hand to bringthem along. And finally: “When you look down that long, straight road it looks as if it doesn’t ever end, but youbetter believe it does.” Our lives are fleeting and finite, and none of us knows how many years we are given. Sotry to accomplish as much good as you can now, showlove and appreciation to your family members today, try tomend broken relationships, make plans and do the thingsyou want to do as soon as you are able, don’t wait untilsome future day that you may not live to see.Pirkei Avot says we must be open to all people and allexperiences that may have something to teach us. Lessonsabout life and the best ways to live it can be foundeverywhere, most especially in our Jewish tradition, butcertainly in other places and from all people. Even inthe Stone House Saloon outside Alladin, Wyoming, therewere meaningful truths to be learned. So as I and my bikerbrethren would wish you: Keep the shiny side up, therubber side down and may you ride safely through yourlife’s journey.

YAHRZEITSOn the anniversaries of remembering, a Jew remembers not only by feeling, but by doing. Kindling a yahrzeit candle the evening before is onething we do; the Kaddish spoken at a gathering of our people is another. All names will be read on the Friday evening before the yahrzeit. Thedate to light the candle is indicated to the right of the name in parentheses. You are encouraged to honor your loved one with a living memorial- a contribution to one of our special Temple funds.January 4Samuel Auslander (6)Jerold Backall (10)Joseph Bolognese (9)Lewis Dabrow (6)Rose Dren (7)Harry Firestein (9)Anna Friedman (4)Dorothy Halpern (9)Marie Helstrom (6)Charlotte Jasper (8)Freda Kenin (10)Paul Kochenour (5)Adeline Korman (7)Janet Leonard (5)Fannie Levin (8)Abraham Levitt (10)Samuel Lieberman (5)Samuel Lowe (10)David Maleh (6)Alma Meissner (5)Alexander Nabedrik (8)Herman Orloff (4)Bernard Penny (4)Rose Polsky (4)Irene Pressel (6)Beatrice Shaines (8)Gertrude Sheckman (6)Ethel Shore (9)Sylvia Siegel (7)Fabian Sunberg (10)Herman Taxin (7)Miriam Yudell (9)January 11Dorothy Asnen (11)Molly Cohen (11)Alfred Collinge (14)Georji Cutler (13)Arkady Danilowitch (16)Robert Ettinger (12)Tom Evans (15)Marty Finkelstein (14)Jacob Finkelstein (13)Erwin Gever (17)Samuel Goodman (11)Mary Gould (13)David Hassid (13)William Hauser (16)Sarah Hodes (14)Martin Levin (13)Eugenia Lewin (14)Paul May (17)Sharon Mitnik (14)Judy Richman (14)Sandy Robbins (17)Anita Rosenberg (15)Samuel Roth (15)Alex Rubin (11)David Shapey (14)Madelyn Siderits (14)Sidney Singer (12)Irving Tashman (17)Harry Tholl (16)Yitzhak Tsals (16)Minnie Weizer (12)Sarah Wolfe (15)Rose Zackon (11)January 18Reba Axler (21)Meyer Barag (22)Max Bard (23)Ethel Barsky (24)Lenard Bulkin (21)William Cautin (22)Brian Cohen (20)Harry Dickstein (20)Diana Dovberg (19)Anne Ettenger (18)Miriam Fishback (18)Lois Gitter (18)Joseph Gordon (21)Marion Gordon (19)Mollie Gould (18)Helen Greenblatt (19)Lea Grubszstein (20)Ellen Hunn (23)Joseph Huscher (21)Martin Jasper (18)Max Lerner (20)Stanley Libeskind (21)Samuel Meadow (18)Harry Miller (23)Emanuel Mintz (18)Milton Nachman (19)Isak Perera (22)Samuel Rosenblum (18)Loretta Sall (19)Louis Shaiken (20)Herbert Sklar (19)Edwin Stark (23)Elizabeth Stinsman (22)Edna Weissberg (23)Burton Wohl (18)Albert Wolf (23)Richard Wolfinger (24)January 25Leo Austein (27)Jessie Axler (29)Robert Berlin (20)Freda Berman (30)Rose Birnbaum (31)Julius Bloom (26)Lana Borochaner (27)Ruth Coleman (28)Mary Fair(25)Benjamin Fein (28)William Finkle (25)Rose Fischman (25)Bernard Freedman (30)Florence Friedman (26)YAHRZEIT LIGHT CEREMONIALHaim Gertner (27)Mary Goldberg (25)Sadie Goldman (27)Sidney Graboyes (31)Bella Herring (25)Etta Joseph (30)Jim Kasman (27)Bertha Katzenstein (26)Anna Kreiner (30)Albert Laurie (28)Richard Lefkowitz (30)Morris Novick (25)Claire Resnick (25)Shirley Schechter (29)Herman Silver (26)Bernard Steinman (25)Belle Straver (30)Yetta Stutz (25)Irwin Tholl (31)Selma Weissman (31)Rita Yett (28)Herbert Yett (29)February 1Renee Azoff (4)Sarah Barag (1)Robert Barsky (7)Jeanne Berger (7)Samuel Birnbaum (1)Joan Bunting (4)Morton Buster (6)Frieda Cohen (4)Mozus Danilowitch (4)Hyman Dimenstein (3)Eleanor Feinberg (5)Esther Forbes (2)Rae Friedman (6)Nathaniel Gerstman (5)Shirley Gilman (3)Sonia Ginsburg (3)Mildred Goldstein (3)Herman Gomberg (5)Alexander Greenlick (7)Philip Herring (3)Dorothy Hirsch (4)Ethel Kaneff (7)Louis Kelberg (5)Laura Kornberg (6)George Langer (1)Reba Millstein (2)Ruth Newman (1)Meyer Newman (5)Etta Newman (7)Richard Nierenberg (5)Fred Pearlstein (4)Sophie Ratner (7)Alvin Richmond (3)Sarah Seltzer (4)Abraham Shuman (3)Jeffrey Spring (6)Samuel Stern (3)Zilla Tsals (6)Pola Tuck (6)Wolf Wilczkowski (1)Rosa Wilczkowski (3)Miriam Wolff (2)The family gathers at dusk, before the evening meal, on the eve of the anniversary of the death of the departed. The head of thefamily speaks: At this moment which bears the memory of our beloved (name), let us join hands in a token of God’s grace. Alink has been broken in the chain of affection which has long bound us together, yet the blessed bonds of home and love remain. With prayerful heart, we receive this divine gift of life which holds us together in family unison.Eternal God, we thank You that, in this time of sadness and loss, You have helped to keep us strong. Though the pain of ourloss is still present for us, we know that love will always be stronger than death. And so, to You, we lift our hearts, becausewe know that our loved one continues to be a living presence in our lives. We acknowledge your mercy, O God, who strengthens us with faith and peace. As our loved one lives for us in these words and memories, we kindle this yahrzeit light and sanctify it in the remembrance ofthe Divine Word: The spirit of humanity is the light of the Lord.(Kindle the Memorial Light.) ZECHER TZADIK LIV-RACHA. May the memory of the righteous be an eternal blessing.
