1.3. <strong>International</strong> Baccalaureate Mission Statement<br />
The <strong>International</strong> Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring<br />
young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through<br />
intercultural understanding and respect.<br />
To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international<br />
organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and<br />
rigorous assessment.<br />
These programmes encourage students across the world to become active,<br />
compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their<br />
differences, can also be right.<br />
1.4. School Background<br />
Founded in 1911, IICS is a private, non-profit, coeducational pre K-12 school serving<br />
<strong>Istanbul</strong>’s international community. Students whose educational and physical needs can<br />
be met will be admitted.<br />
The school is fully authorized to offer all three <strong>International</strong> Baccalaureate programmes in<br />
English and is accredited by the Council of <strong>International</strong> Schools (CIS) and the <strong>New</strong><br />
England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). Over 90% of graduates attend<br />
post-secondary education.<br />
The Board of Directors oversees the long-term educational and financial health of the<br />
school. As the school is a guest institution in Turkey, the Board of Directors affirms that in its<br />
education policies and teaching practices, there will be nothing contrary to the interests<br />
of national security, to the activities of the Turkish Nation or to its national values.<br />
1.5. School Governance<br />
<strong>Istanbul</strong> <strong>International</strong> <strong>Community</strong> School is a not-for-profit, independent, international<br />
day school governed by a combination of elected and self-perpetuating Board of<br />
Directors. The Board of Directors has full control and direction over the affairs of the<br />
school, including selection, appointment and evaluation of the Headmaster, setting of<br />
