Welcome to our Autumn Edition!
Hello everyone and welcome to our September edition—coming out a little
late this year! We have been extremely busy after coming back from a
proper summer break in August. We hope you had nice holiday breaks too,
in spite of the not-so-favourable weather!
We just held our Supporters‘ Meeting in Basingtoke (read more on page 19)
and it was great to see so many of you there. It was definitely one of the
most successful meetings we‘ve ever had, and we hope to see even more of
you at the next one on Saturday 11 February 2012! We now have Fast
Day around the corner, plus many more events coming up—especially next
year as we will be marking the 50th anniversary of CAFOD (see page 13).
We hope you will be joining us in the celebrations!
The most overwhelming aspect of the last few months has been the
incredible generosity with which you have all responded to our East Africa
Appeal, which has now reached over £4.5 million in total. You can find an
update on the situation in East Africa on page 4. Thanks and happy reading!
Harvest Fast Day
Friday 7 October marks our next Harvest Fast
Day and parishes will have already received all
the envelopes and materials (if there are any
problems or if you need more resources—please
let us know!) We are very conscious that this Fast
Day comes just after people have been so
generously donating to our East Africa appeal;
however, as you know, we have many partners
throughout the world who also need our support
to continue their life-saving work. The Harvest
collection will be crucial in ensuring that we can
continue to work alongside them, so it would be
great if this could be mentioned during the short
talk at Mass, if you are giving one.
This year, Harvest Fast Day is not so much
focused on a particular country, but rather on a
theme—the theme of childhood dreams and
ambitions, and the factors that prevent children
from achieving them. The parish and school
Pan’s story features in the
parish materials
materials explore the theme from different perspectives.
The parish materials and envelopes feature the story of Pan from
Cambodia. Pan was just 11 when he tested positive for HIV. Just months
later, both his parents died within weeks of each other, because of AIDS.
Pan had to go and live with his aunt who didn‘t treat him very well. He was
forced to leave school and sell rice on the streets to earn money. He knew

that life-saving medication was available, but
he didn‘t know how to get it. As the months
passed, Pan grew weaker and weaker. A priest
called Father Jim heard about his situation and
stepped in to help. Father Jim worked for
Maryknoll, a Catholic organisation funded by
CAFOD (some of you will remember it from the
story of Phalla at Harvest 09) which offers
medical care, nutritious food, school support,
and loving, caring homes to children affected
Holly and Lara “star” in the Secondary
Schools materials!
What Your Money Can Buy
posters; an ever-popular resource
by HIV. Shocked by Pan‘s physical condition, Fr Jim took him straight to
hospital and staff from Maryknoll visited him daily. After he was discharged
3 weeks later, Fr Jim arranged for Pan to live with caring people in a safe
and happy home. Pan started taking medication and was soon strong
enough to return to school. Four years on, Pan says his life is transformed.
―If it wasn‘t for Maryknoll‘s help, I don‘t think I would be here. I couldn‘t
carry on living with so much pain‖, he told us.
Pan‘s story makes us reflect on the many children like him who are missing
out on living ―normal‖ lives - and whose stories do not necessarily have
happy endings. By supporting Harvest Fast Day this year, we can help many
children like Pan around the world turn their lives around.
We hope as many of you as possible will be using the short talk at Mass to
introduce Pan and the theme—please let us know if you are speaking, or if
you need a speaker. You can find plenty of resources at
www.cafod.org.uk/fastday They include a short and longer version of
the talk, homily notes, background on Cambodia and Pan‘s story in his own
words, children‘s liturgy, a set of What Your Money Can Buy posters (an
ever-popular resource—let us know if you would like to receive printed
copies in the post) and more! The Harvest Fast Day prayer (printed on page
20 and on the envelope) is also particularly beautiful this year—please
encourage parishioners to use it, in their personal or family prayer.
School resources for primary schools
focus on the theme of childhood
dreams. A Harvest School Mass is also
available—which could also be used at a
family Mass on a Sunday.
But we are particularly proud of the
secondary school resources (focusing
on Kenya and how sport can help young
people lift themselves out of poverty),
as they feature our diocesan ―heroines‖
Holly and Lara who visited our
partners in Kenya over the summer!
(see pages 8-9). We wish you a fruitful
Fast Day—and if you need any help,
please get in touch!!
Emergencies Update
As mentioned on page 2, we have
been absolutely overwhelmed by the
generosity of parishes, schools and
individuals to our East Africa appeal,
launched in July. Total donations have
now reached over £4.5 million, and
the contribution from our diocese has
reached nearly £254,000 at the time
of writing—thank you so much!
The drought in the region has been
the worst for 60 years, affecting 10
million people. Very poor rains have led to crop failure/serious food and
water shortages, and no rain is expected until October. The UN declared a
famine in two regions of southern Somalia in July. On 4 August, it classified
three new areas as having been hit by famine.
CAFOD is working with a wide range of local Catholic and other partners in
Kenya and dioceses in the worst affected areas of Somalia, Ethiopia and
South Sudan. The money you donated so far has already provided:
Emergency food packs for more than 30,000 people in South Sudan
and food aid for 24,500 people in Ethiopia.
Clean water for more than 18,000 people and water points which will
deliver clean water to 72,000 more in Ethiopia. Water points also set up
to deliver water to 30,000 people in Kenya.
New livestock or veterinary support benefitting more than 14,000 in
Kenya.
Emergency food aid for thousands of people in Somalia.
For more information about the crisis and the latest updates, or to make a
donation to the appeal, please visit the CAFOD website at
www.cafod.org.uk/get-involved/give/emergency-appeals/east-africa-crisis
Alongside the East Africa crisis, we have been helping our partners in
Bangladesh, who, at the end of August, were hit by devastating floods,
affecting nearly 1 million people. Severe monsoon rains have caused several
major rivers to burst their banks. We are working with local partners to
provide food packs and basic necessities like clothes, cooking utensils and
pots and pans, as well as water purification tablets to help prevent the
spread of disease.
Lastly, we are also working in Pakistan, where last week heavy monsoon
rains have caused widespread flooding in Sindh province—many parts of
which are still recovering from the floods of 2010. More than 5 million
people have been affected and at least a million homes have been damaged
or destroyed. For updates on the situation in Pakistan, please visit the
CAFOD website.

An Extra Special Connect2 Visit!
Edna, Henry and Briony with Odette
at the Totton event!
Sunday 10 July was not a day like any
other for the parishes of Totton, Lyndhurst
and Waterside! The 3 communities all
support our Connect2:Rwanda initiative,
and on that day they had the pleasure of
meeting Odette Kayirere, founder of
CAFOD partner AVEGA (one of the
organisations that we support via the
Connect2 scheme). AVEGA is a women‘s
association that supports women in Rwanda
widowed by the genocide. Odette lost her
husband and most of her family in the genocide and has dedicated herself to
helping other widows ever since. AVEGA provides psychosocial and medical
rehabilitation to thousands of genocide survivors and has constructed
thousands of widows‘ and orphans‘ houses.
Odette‘s achievements are so awesome that in 2009 she received the United
Nations World Summit Foundation‘s prize for Women‘s Creativity in Rural Life
and in 2010 The Guardian‘s International Development Achievement Award.
This year she received the Women‘s Rights prize from the US Gruber
Foundation, which honours individuals who have made significant
contributions to the rights of women and girls around the world. Wow!
During her 2-week ―UK tour‖ that also took her to Number 10, Odette met
with our wonderful supporters in the New Forest and shared her life
experiences and the work of AVEGA with them at a special luncheon. She
was made very welcome indeed, thanks to all the efforts of our fab
volunteers on the ground! Our special thanks in particular goes to Edna
Wharton and the CAFOD group in Totton for putting together the delicious
lunch, Henry Rosenvinge from Lyndhurst for kindly offering accomodation
to Odette during her stay, and Angela Slattery and Louise Croll from
Waterside parish for all their help and support (Angela gave a great talk on
the day to introduce Odette and the Musha community!)
A special raffle raised another £350 for
Connect2, which is fantastic. This adds to
the total of over £4,000 that the 3 parishes
had already raised for Connect2.
If you would like more information about
Connect2, please do not hesitate to get in
touch and we could send you a welcome
pack and an introductory leaflet. There are 6
countries to choose from. More information
is also available at: www.cafod.org.uk/
Supporting the Get down to
business campaign!
Campaign News
Lots and lots has been happening since our
June issue on the campaigns front!
First of all, a huge thanks to all those who
supported our Get down to business
campaign, which came to a close at the end
of July. As you will remember, the campaign
was calling on Andrew Mitchell, Secretary of
State for International Development, asking
him to prioritize the needs of small
businesses in developing countries when
deciding spending priorities for UK aid. The
campaign was a great success with 16,830 actions collected nationally—
and our diocese was one of the biggest contributors, with nearly 1,400
actions from parishes (thanks to all those who helped organise ―mass
signings‖ or who encouraged others to sign action cards!) and over 1,000
actions from young people, thanks to Lynda and our school volunteers who
promoted the campaign in secondary schools around the diocese!
The hand-in of cards to Andrew Mitchell will take place by the end of the
month—keep an eye on the CAFOD website for the latest news!
The other major success has been Tea Time for Change—a mass lobby of
MPs on international development at Westminster Central Hall on 9 June,
organised by CAFOD, Oxfam, Action Aid, Christian Aid and Tearfund. It was
a truly inspiring occasion (with a massive CAFOD presence!) Over 1,200
people attended the day and 146 MPs were lobbied. Many other supporters
signed a petition online in support of the event, wrote to their MP and
lobbied their MP in their constituency if the MP was unable to attend on the
day. Keynote speakers included our very own Chris Bain, Andrew Mitchell
and Harriet Harman, Shadow Secretary of State for International
Development. Please visit our blog cafodportsmouth.wordpress.com for
more stories and photos from the day! Thanks so much to all those who
supported the event!
But the most important piece of news has
been the launch of the new phase or our
climate justice campaign: Don’t drop the
ball on climate change. We urgently need
your help in promoting the campaign, as
there is time to take action only until 10
November—and we need as many
signatures as possible!!! The campaign
focuses on the next UN climate meeting
(COP17). Those of you who have been
involved with our climate justice campaign
Pam Flavell and Richard Arthur,
Bournemouth, with Tobias Ellwood
MP at Tea Time for Change

Campaign News
before will remember COP15 in Copenaghen in 2009 and COP16 in Cancun
last year. COP17 will take place in Durban, South Africa, from 28
November til 9 December (which is why we only have a limited time for
action). Our ―campaign target‖ this time is Chancellor George Osborne
and we are asking him to to push for progress in the vital area of climate
finance by:
Ensuring the UK provides its fair share of finance to help people in
developing countries adapt to climate change over the long term.
Specifically, by ensuring a plan is adopted at the next UN talks in
Durban to mobilise the money needed;
 Championing the setting up of a new Green Climate Fund in Durban;
Committing to channel the UK‘s contribution through this Fund.
The background to those asks is that in Cancun last year, the UK and other
developed countries agreed to provide $100 billion every year to help
developing countries cope with the effects of climate change and develop
in an environmentally-friendly way. They also agreed on the need for a
new ‗Green Climate Fund‘ (GCF) through
which to channel some of the money—to be
managed by the UN. It is vital that progress in
this area is made in Durban this year—
otherwise these will remain empty promises.
So please take action and encourage as many
people as you can do to so!
Visit our website at cafod.org.uk/
dontdroptheball for more information on the
campaign and for resources, including the
Facts in Your Hands handout (with lots of
useful background information) and the
Parish Action Sheet, packed with ideas for
promoting the campaign in the parish. To order
action cards or resources, please contact us.
Pastoral communities in Kenya
are hit especially hard by
recurrent droughts
And don‘t forget to tell us if you are promoting the campaign locally!
For those of you based in the Reading area, there will be a very special
talk (see poster on page 11) by Sarah Wykes, our Lead Analyst on
Environment and Climate Change, on Wed 26 October at Our Lady and
St Anne parish hall in Caversham at 7.30pm. Sarah is a real expert in
the field, so it promises to be a very informative evening! The talk is part
of Reading International Festival. Make sure you do not miss it if you live
in the area! Spread the word and bring your friends along!
Schools News—Holly and Lara Superstars!
11 March 2011 is a day that Holly and
Lara, students at Oaklands Secondary
School in Waterlooville, will long
remember. As you might recall from our
last newsletter, that was the day they came
to Romero House (CAFOD‘s HQ) with their
RE teacher and CAFOD supporter Mugeni
Sumba for an interview. They had taken
part in a competition that was open to all
secondary schools in the South-East. The winning school would be offered
an opportunity to visit some of CAFOD‘s projects in Kenya to see how sport
is used by our partners to develop leadership skills in local communities.
Pupils would then be invited to report back on their experiences on their
return and inspire other young people to take action for change. Oaklands
Catholic School had been shortlisted together with 3 other schools, and they
did so well that they were selected to go on the trip, which was to take place
at the end of June, together with 2 more students from St Columba school
in St Albans! It is virtually impossible to summarise Holly and Lara‘s
amazing experience in a couple of pages, but those of you who follow our
blog will have read extensively about it—if you haven‘t yet, visit
cafodportsmouth.wordpress.com and search for ―Holly‖ or ―Lara‖.
However, it is even more challenging to summarise the amazing outcomes of
their experience—which began to bear fruit even before it started!
Before the trip, Holly and Lara were featured both in their local paper
(Portsmouth News) and on BBC Radio Solent. Whilst they were in
Kenya, they recorded sounds and voices of the country (with equipment lent
to them by the BBC), which were then broadcasted on Radio Solent upon
their return—one snippet per day for an entire week! One morning, they
even did a live radio broadcast from there—which was fantastic! They also
appeared in news bulletins on TV (BBC
South) - which made us really proud! If
you would like to see the BBC video clip,
visit www.cafod.org.uk/portsmouth, or
contact us for a copy of the recording of
the radio material. But most
importantly—ever since they came back,
Holly and Lara have shared their lifechanging
experiences with hundreds of
people (giving presentations to all age
groups in their school, at our Supporters‘
Meeting in Basingstoke etc) with a lot
more talks and activities coming up in the
next few months—including CAFOD‘s Great
Holly and Lara at St John’s Sport
Society in Korogocho, the biggest
slum in Nairobi

Schools News—Holly and Lara Superstars!
Generation Conference in October where
they will be speaking to hundreds of young
Catholics from all over the South East. At
just 16, they are fantastic speakers and
incredibly inspirational! Trying to
summarise what the trip had meant to
them, they wrote: ―Overall this trip has
been incredible; however no words can
truly describe what it meant to us. It has
been life changing in a way that we would
Callum interviewed Dermot O’Leary
for CAFOD!
Walking in Korogocho
never have imagined. Honestly, we never thought it would affect us as much
as it actually has. We will never forget everyone we met, and their stories
are so inspirational. We hope that the message we bring back will reach
many people and that together we can work to make a difference in the
lives of the many people we met. Beyond doubt, our eyes have been opened
to how life in Kenya is really like, and we now understand the impact and
positive change the fundraising we have been doing has on people‘s lives –
and we must continue to make a difference. Coming back, we realise now
more than ever that telling people our story is crucial to helping developing
countries like Kenya. Youths are the next generation and together we are
the ones that will bring about change, so we could not live with ourselves if
we just sat back and did nothing – which is why we want to tell you that
people in Kenya need our support and help.‖ We are so very proud of Holly
and Lara and all that they are achieving—and we are so blessed to have
them in our diocese! A huge thanks to them both for everything and also to
Mr Sumba, who has worked tirelessly with them throughout the whole
experience! They are all fantastic CAFOD ambassadors!
The Best CAFOD Reporter!
On 11 March, there was one more student from Oaklands who successfully
took part in the selection process for the Kenya trip—Callum. Unfortunately
though, Callum was unable to go to Kenya
in the end, so CAFOD offered him a
different once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!
He got to meet and interview Dermot
O’Leary at the BBC studios in London!
He gave him a real grilling on why he
supports CAFOD, his life and what‘s going
on behind the scenes at the X factor!
The full interview can be read on the
Our second primary public speaking
competition was another success!
Pupils from St Peter’s School in
Bournemouth supported the Get
down to business campaign
10
Schools News!
During the last term of the school year,
Lynda and our team of school volunteers
were very busy again visiting schools all
over the diocese! There are many
highlights from the visits (please look at
our blog for details of individual visits!),
and we wanted to share some with you!
Students from St Mary’s Primary School
in Maidenhead and St Bernard’s
Preparatory School in Slough
(Northampton Diocese) went head to head
in our second primary school public speaking competition last July. The
theme was ―Why Fairtrade is important?‖ and the 6 finalists had
thoroughly researched the topic before delivering their 2-3 minute talks with
great competence! The jury had a very difficult job in selecting the winner,
as they were so impressed by everybody‘s enthusiasm and knowledge, but
in the end the first prize went to Emma from St Bernard’s. It was a great
own voices to the campaign!
Lastly, a huge thanks to all the schools that
contributed to our East Africa appeal.
St Joseph’s Primary School in
Aldershot went the extra mile and
organised a very special ―Crazy Hair
Day‖ (see picture on the right): everybody
was invited to wear a whacky hairstyle on
the day, and the pupils‘ efforts contributed
to raising an overall total of £320 for the
appeal! Great stuff—thanks so much to
everyone involved!
day and we hope to run even more speaking
competitions this academic year!
In secondary schools (but also in a few
primaries!) over 1,000 puplis overall showed
their support for our Get down to
business campaign by signing petitions
(like the one pictured left, from St Peter’s
school in Bournemouth) to Andrew
Mitchell—which is fantastic! All the students
involved learned about how small businesses
in developing countries can help lift people
out of poverty, and how they could add their
“Crazy Hair Day” at St Joseph’s
Primary in Aldershot in aid of the
East Africa Appeal!

Our amazing walkers!
12
Walk for Justice
On Sunday 26 June, over 30 walkers
from all over the diocese gathered at
Corpus Christi parish hall in
Boscombe, Bournemouth, to take part
in our Walk for Justice! The 6-mile
walk, which incorporated 4 prayer
stops, was both an opportunity for a
different day out and a chance to
stand in solidarity with our brothers
and sisters across the world.
At first it was too misty to really see
very much of the stunning coastline at all! However by the time we got to
Christchurch Priory at lunchtime, the mist had finally lifted and we were
basking in glorious sunshine! The last part of the walk was probably the
most challening for all because of the heat, but everybody was detemined to
complete it—which was definitely encouraging! By the time we got back to
Corpus Christi parish hall, we were all looking forward to a good cup of tea!
While enjoying our well deserved refreshments, we also had a chance to
write messages of support to our partner MDF in Brazil (Movimento de
Defesa do Favelado, working in São Paulo on housing rights and the urban
programme), whose members were about to take part in a special
pilgrimage in July (the ―Martyrs‘ Pilgrimage‖) to commemorate all those who
have lost their lives for justice, freedom and true peace. Our colleague Tony
Sheen from the Westminster office flew to Brazil to join them, and took with
him our photos and messages of solidarity that we wrote on the day -
pictured below is Nete from MDF holding our picture from the walk!! We
were indeed very moved here in the office when we saw the picture!
Nete said: "When we face difficulties, we
will remember that people across the
other side of the world are thinking of us
and this will give us strength. I want you
to be certain that the work we are doing,
like tiny ants, is making a real impact on
the lives of the families here. And if it
wasn’t for your support, we would be
in a very different situation" - which is
so inspirational! A huge thanks to all who
came along on the day and our team of
local volunteers who helped so much to
make the day a real success!
Nete, from CAFOD partner MDF in
Brazil, holds the picture of our
walkers!

2012: A Special Year for CAFOD!
As some of you might know, 2012 is not going to be a
year like any other for CAFOD! Last year we celebrated the
50th anniversary of Lent Fast Day, but 2012 will mark the
50th anniversary of CAFOD itself—it was 1962 when the
―fund‖ as it was called at the time (Catholic Fund for
Overseas Development) was officially establised as the
the overseas aid agency of the Catholic Bishops in England
and Wales. To mark this very special occasion, we have a whole range of
events planned throughout the year that will hopefully suit all tastes—and
we hope you will be joining us by taking part in as many as you can!
First of all, on a national level there will be a special Mass (Vincent Nichols
will be the principal celebrant) with all the Bishops at Westminster
Cathedral on Sunday 28th January at 2pm—followed by a reception in
the Cathedral Hall. For those who wish to attend, there will also be an open
morning at Romero House from 10.30am til 1pm– a great chance to visit
CAFOD‘s office for those of you who might have not seen it yet.
The Mass is a ticketed event and we will have 100 tickets available for our
Diocese, which will be distributed on a first-come-first-serve
basis (hopefully everybody who wishes to come
will be able to!) We will send out proper
information about this soon, however if you
you wish to come along, please let us know as
soon as possible so that we can reserve you
a ticket!
Locally, the following events are already planned—and there might be more
to follow!
1) Thursday 17 May—CAFOD Golfing Day at Royal Winchester Golf
Club—the first-ever golfing day in aid of CAFOD in our diocese! So if you are
keen golfers, make sure you put the date in your diaries! Details TBC closer
to the date. A huge thanks to our volunteer Roger Lillie (an avid golfer!) who
helped us secure such a brilliant venue!
2) Saturday 16 June— A beautilful walk with prayer stops on the riverside
around Maidenhead and Cookham—similar to this year‘s Walk for Justice
(see left). Sponsorship forms will be available for those wishing to raise
money for CAFOD.
3) Saturday 29 September—CAFOD concert at Douai Abbey,
Upper Woolhapton—coordinated by our volunteer Hugh Gibbons. Details
TBC—a great musical evening in the stunning setting of the Abbey Chruch.
Schools will be very busy celebrating too, with a football tournament and
more public speaking competitions in the pipeline—we will keep you posted
on all of the above, but in the meantime, make sure you mark the dates!!
TURNING 50 NEXT YEAR? Why not throw a special birthday party... and
perhaps include CAFOD‘s World Gifts in the wish list for your presents? Turn
to page 16/17 to see the new range...
Immunisation
stickers £14
If you want a ―real‖ present to accompany
our ever-popular and colourful Romero
crosses!
―My wife taught me to paint,‖ he says.
―I work as a shepherd looking after cattle
at night, but now I‘m earning more selling
crafts as well. The large orders we get from CAFOD are helping us to
survive. My dream is to buy our own house, because this one is only rented
and we could be asked to leave at any time. Maybe one day we will get what
we long for. We look on the people in England and Wales who buy our
crafts as part of our family and we thank you for your support.‖
Time to Sing Out Against Poverty!
Monday 17 October, the annual International
Day for the Eradication of Poverty, is drawing
near and our Bracknell-based volunteer Hugh
Gibbons has been very busy indeed, promoting
his Sing Out Against Poverty initiative to all
schools around the country - and also around
the world (J&P groups from the Diocese of
Melbourne in Australia will also be joining in!).
All schools and individuals taking part are invited, on that day or one of the
days leading up to it, to join in a ―virtual choir‖ and sing the specially-writtenfor-the-occasion
―Count on us‖ song—which can be downloaded, together
with many other resources, from Hugh‘s website at:
just1.org.uk/singoutagainstpoverty/
Schools will also be joined by individuals—including the Anglican Bishop of
Oxford John Pritchard, who has promised to sing before breakfast on Monday
17! The idea is to build a massive choir for justice around the world, and
children in schools, together with singing the song, can also use the
Promises to the Poor which have been very popular in previous years.
Remember that parishes/groups can take part as well, so if are interested in
joining the massive choir, do not forget to register on the website!!!
Looking Forward to the Great South Run
The Great South Runs are now just over a
month away!!! We‘ve started praying for
beautiful sunshine like we had last year!
We very much look forward to welcoming our
teams of runners: those taking part in the
Junior Run on Saturday 29 October, and
our 14-strong team of CAFOD runners in the
main run on Sunday 30th October.
Like last year, we will be based at the Royal
Beach Hotel, St Helen's Parade, Portsmouth
PO4 0RN—right opposite South Parade Pier.
It is a prime spot for cheering up the runners—right along the racecourse!
As you know, we always look for cheerers on the day—to “spread” along the
course and shout encouragement to the CAFOD team!
So, if you fancy a different day out, or if you live in the Portsmouth area, do
get in touch with us and we would love to see you on the day. We will be
―armed‖ with lots of banners to make sure CAFOD does not go unnoticed—and
we‘ll also have a good stock of big CAFOD brollies in case it rains, so don‘t
worry about bad weather!! We look forward to the event, rain or shine!

A Great Supporters’ Meeting!
A huge thanks to all those who attended our
last Supporters’ Meeting at St Bede’s
Primary School in Basingstoke on Saturday
10 September—with nearly 50 people
attending, great speakers and a buzzing
atmosphere, it was probably our most
successful Supporters‘ Meeting so far!
After an update on what has been going on
CAFOD-wise in the diocese in the last few
months, Holly (see page 8-9) gave a talk about her experience in Kenya,
which left everybody speechless, as she was so brilliant and inspirational!
Maria Elena Arana from the Campaigns Team provided a great introduction
to our ‗Don‘t drop the ball‘ campaign (see pages 6-7) and the new parish
livesimply award (see livesimplyaward.org.uk), and Maria Dyson from
the Legacy Team gave an overview of our legacy work! The day ended with
workshops (Schools, livesimply award, Legacies and MP correspondents) and
lunch for those who could stay.
A huge thanks to all those who came along and to all our speakers for
making it such an inspiring occasion!
A Spanish CAFOD challenge for Angela & Martin!
At the time of writing (Friday 16 September), Angela
and Martin Wills from English Martyrs parish in
Reading are just about to board the plane to embark in
a very special challenge for CAFOD—the Camino de
Santiago in Northern Spain!
As you know, this is the second year that CAFOD has
organised a special pilgrimage which involves walking
the last 100 miles of the popular pilgrim route along
the beautiful and peaceful, but rugged countryside
across the north of Spain, ending at the extraordinary
Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela – believed to be
the resting place of the apostle St James. Angela and Martin hope to raise at
least £1,000, to make a real difference and transform the lives of some of
the poorest people around the world. Angela said: ―Walking the Camino is
something I have always wanted to do. The possibility of raising money at
the same time to help other people suffering from hunger, sickness and
homelessness through no fault of their own gave me the added incentive to
take the challenge and face my fears.‖
To sponsor Angela and Martin, visit their justgiving page: justgiving.com/
AngelaWills We look forward to hearing from them when they are back—
keep an eye on the blog! Please keep Angela and Martin in your prayers
during their journey.
