Ward 18 Admissions AreaWard 18 is an admissions area and day case ward for orthopaedicand sports injury patients. The ward opens Monday - Friday at 7:15am and closes at 7:30pm.Nearly all elective orthopaedic patients requiring surgery areadmitted to ward 18, however on occasion patients can beadmitted directly to the inpatient wards 14/16/19 due to bedavailability. Beds are also available on the Surgical Day Case Unit, you will be contacted by telephone if your admission location isto be altered. If your admission day is Saturday you will be contacted on Fridayevening to confirm your allocated ward. If we are unable to contactyou for a Saturday admission please report directly to ward 14.DRAFTThe area and the admissions processThe area is designed to provide a warm, welcoming, safe andrelaxing environment for patients to be prepared for theiroperation on the day of admission. There is a reception area, day room with television and payphone. Please be aware that ward 18 and some of the other inpatientwards can have both male and female patients at times;however sexes are not mixed in single areas, as male and femalepatients are in different bays and have separate waiting areas, changing and toileting facilities.3

The area and the admissions process (continued)Your relative or friend is welcome to accompany you to ward 18,however as it is a busy admissions area and has limited space, for reasons of patient privacy and dignity, relatives are notencouraged to stay unless there is a specific requirement agreedwith the nursing staff. In this case a maximum of one persononly will be allowed to stay with the patient. After 12 noon a friend or relative can call ward 18 (0116 2584147) to find out which ward you are on. It would be useful ifthey could pass this information onto other family and friends. You will go to theatre from ward 18. If you are going home onthe day of surgery you will usually go back to ward 18, otherwiseyou will be transferred to one of the Orthopaedic Wards (ward14, 16 and 19).DRAFTWhilst we try and transfer you directly to aninpatient ward directly after your stay in the theatre recovery ,you may need to return to ward 18 until an in-patient bedbecomes available. We try to keep post-operative in-patients onthe same ward after surgery, however it may be necessary onoccasions to transfer you again due to bed availability or otherneeds.Ward 18 will appear very busy initially whilst all the clinical staff(surgeons, anaesthetists, junior doctors and nurses) assessespatients. It will then settle down as patients are taken to theatre. The nurses will admit and prepare you for your operationaccording to the finalised order of the theatre list. This occurs by8:30am and whilst it does alter on occasion due to clinicalreasons, you will be kept informed of the progress of the list andgiven approximate waiting times.4

What about waiting times? We try to minimise waiting times prior to operations, however itis inevitable that some patients may have to wait until as late as4pm. We appreciate your patience and understanding whilst youwait for your operation. Theatre start time is 8:30am for an allday list and 1pm for afternoon lists. Most patients need to beseen by the anaesthetist and all patients need to see the surgeonprior to start of theatre.Unfortunately there is no extra time in the schedule to stopoperating, for patients to be seen in between cases and later inthe day. Therefore all patients must be assessed before the startof the whole operating list. Please feel welcome to bring things whilst you wait, such asbooks, magazines,DRAFTpuzzles, word searches etc.You may be able to leave the ward for short periods of time, tostretch your legs, and change environment. Please discuss thiswith a member of the nursing team.5

What about eating and drinking? You will have been given your fasting times at pre-assessmentand this will have been confirmed by letter. Please ensure youkeep to this guidance, as failure to do so can have seriousconsequences during surgery and may lead to your operationbeing cancelled. The anaesthetist will discuss with the nursing team if you can eatand drink after the theatre list has been confirmed on youradmission day. If the Anaesthetist agrees that fluid or fluid anddiet can be given, a member of the nursing team will arrange this.Eating and drinking after your operation- Day Case patientsreturning to ward 18.There are no hot meals provided on ward 18 but sandwiches andtoast area available,DRAFTalong with hot drinks and soup, cakes andbiscuits.Hospital Facilities• Margaret’s restaurant and Costa Coffee Café• WRVS shop and Café Bar• Cash Machine (ATM)• Accommodation - please contact:belindaderbyshire@uhl-tr.nhs.uk or telephone: 0794 9289 379(Monday - Friday 8.00am - 4.00pm).6
