Tosubmit an item for publication in Update, send the information to surgupdt@umn.edu.HONORS AND AWARDSTodd Kellogg, M.D. has been appointed as the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Minnesota</strong> representative to the Society <strong>of</strong> <strong>Surgery</strong> for theAlimentary tract.PRESENTATIONSOn May 4, 2011, Greg Beilman, M.D. (Critical & Acute Care <strong>Surgery</strong>) was the invited speaker at the Roundtable Meeting<strong>of</strong> the Biomedical Engineering Materials & Applications (BEMA) Annual Meeting in Washington, DC.Michael Maddaus, M.D. was an invited presenter at the 91st Annual Meeting <strong>of</strong> the American Association for Thoracic<strong>Surgery</strong> in Philadelpia, PA on the topic <strong>of</strong> Laparoscopic Repair for Giant Hiatal Hernia.Michael Maddaus, M.D. was an invited discussant for the General Thoracic Scientific Session at the 91st Annual Meeting<strong>of</strong> the American Association for Thoracic <strong>Surgery</strong> in Philadelpia, PA. He discussed the work <strong>of</strong> Altorki and colleaguesentitled Prevalence and Outcomes <strong>of</strong> Diaphragmatic Hernia Admissions: Analysis <strong>of</strong> a National Database.IN THE NEWSThe <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Minnesota</strong> Transplant group was highlighted in the May 2011 <strong>Minnesota</strong> Medicine magazine coverstory, “The New Transplant Patient.” A companion article, "<strong>Minnesota</strong> Firsts" shows a timeline <strong>of</strong> transplant milestones.The full story can be found at http://www.minnesotamedicine.com/Drs. Timothy Pruett, Ty Dunn, and Arthur Matas were interviewed for the article.DEPARTMENT OF SURGERY RESEARCH DAYPoster SessionMonday, June 13 from 3-6pmThe Executive Research Council is hosting a Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>Surgery</strong> Research Day on Monday, June 13, 2011. Allfaculty, residents, staff (including post docs, fellows, scientists, etc) and students in the Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>Surgery</strong> are invitedto present their research as a poster. Abstracts recently presented at meetings are encouraged.Please email a copy <strong>of</strong> your abstract along with the name and contact information <strong>of</strong> the presenting author tobtr@umn.edu to reserve your space. Abstracts should be submitted by Monday, June 6, 2011.On June 13 from 3-6 pm, all faculty, fellows, residents, students and staff are invited to a poster viewing andreception. This will be held in the 2 nd floor <strong>of</strong> Moos Tower, in front <strong>of</strong> the Java City Café. All poster presenters areexpected to be available during this time to answer questions regarding their research. This is an excellent opportunity tohear more about the research being conducted by your colleagues & prizes will be awarded for best poster presentationsin various categories.


RESIDENT RESEARCH DAYCall for AbstractsDepartment <strong>of</strong> <strong>Surgery</strong>The Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>Surgery</strong> 2011 Resident Research Day is scheduled for Tuesday, June 14, 2011, immediatelyfollowing Grand Rounds in PWB 11-157. All surgical residents are encouraged to submit an abstract for consideration.All current lab residents are expected to submit an abstract for presentation.The deadline for submission <strong>of</strong> abstracts is Friday, June 3, 2010. Abstracts should be submitted online athttp://www.surg.umn.edu/Education/Abstract_Submission/.Two Resident Research Day awards will be given – one for excellence in clinical research and one for excellence inbasic science research.
