To meet the plant requirements,mix operates 24 hours a day,seven days a week, 365 days a year,regardless of holidays, weekends, orMAG activities.There is a crew for each of the threeregular shifts, plus a relief crew thatworks when one of the regular crewshas a day off. The schedule has a fourweek cycle that gives each crew amaximum number of weekend days off;a four-day weekend each four weeks;and two 12-hour shifts in each cycle.There is a slight catch to obtaining thefour-day weekends, though; they onlycome after the crews have workedseven straight days.The plan allows Gary Harris, MixDepartment supervisor, to schedule thecrews a full year at a time. This meansIan to work certain weekendsthey and can i' olidays; and they can makethe best of those 12 four-day weekendseach year.Promotions occur frequently in theMix Department, which is not surprisingconsidering the type of require-ments new employees must meet andthe type of on-the-job experience theyreceive. Gary ex lains, "We prefer thata mix operator gave at least two yearsof college credits in science or math,or two years experience in a chemicalprocess industry; he must be able towork with people; versatile; willing toreally apply himself on his job; beneat; and use math readily."
