If these symptoms are untreated they can leadto death.■ If a person complains of the coldor shows any symptoms ofmoving towards the second stageof hypothermia, get them off thewater as soon as possible.■ Get them out of the wind andwarm them up with dryclothing/coverings and warmdrinks, but never alcohol.■ If their condition deteriorates orfails to improve, seek urgentmedical attention.2630
Artificial resuscitationSuspected drowning is extremely rare among windsurfers. However, if someone appears tohave stopped breathing due to being in the water, speed is crucial in maintaining oxygento the brain.Check for breathing by placing your cheek beside the casualty’s mouth and looking attheir chest. If there is no sign, begin immediate artificial resuscitation. This techniqueshould be learnt through a first aid course.ConcussionA bang on the head can easily lead to concussion or loss of consiousness.
