In 1939, an extensive survey wasmade of all revenue freight cars to determine their actual physical conditionand the type of long range equipment program needed -bo reduce maintenance costsand provide the Company lIdth equipment suited to its requirements.To this end, 3,74h cars have been retired since 1938 as IIY10rn outbeyond economical repair ll •Between 1947 and --953, 1,2,35 new freight cars were pm'chased, andabout 350 have been subjected to heavy repairs sufficient to insure their inclusionas serviceable cars for a number of years.As of August3 1953, 37 percent of our freight cars are listed asmore than twenty years old (including those subjected to heavy repairs) andthe average age of all revenue freight cars was fourteen years, winch of coursealso includes those which received heavy repairs, but whose recorded age sinceoriginal construction has not been changed.
