Introducti<strong>on</strong>1.1 Worcester residents invite New York Ghanaians to come to WorcesterIn <strong>the</strong> 70’s <strong>and</strong> 80’s <strong>the</strong> Worcester area had a lot of factories that paid very well. The Ghanaiansin Worcester told <strong>the</strong>ir friends who lived in New York city about <strong>the</strong> <strong>be</strong>nefits of living inWorcester: good pay <strong>and</strong> <strong>be</strong>tter living c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s. But <strong>the</strong> New York residents were usuallyreluctant to move <strong>and</strong> so <strong>the</strong> Worcester Ghanaians invited <strong>the</strong>m to come <strong>and</strong> see how <strong>the</strong>c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s were. When <strong>the</strong>y came, almost always <strong>the</strong>y liked <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s so much that <strong>the</strong>ymoved to Worcester. Worcester started <strong>be</strong>coming a popular destinati<strong>on</strong> for Ghanaians in NewYork <strong>be</strong>cause <strong>the</strong> Worcester people kept asking <strong>the</strong>m to come <strong>and</strong> see for <strong>the</strong>mselves.1.2 Every<strong>on</strong>e checks something out <strong>be</strong>fore <strong>the</strong>y commit to it.Man has a sense of doubt <strong>and</strong> curiosity <strong>and</strong> unless he sees something for himself it is hard forhim to <strong>be</strong>lieve. No <strong>on</strong>e buys a car or a house without first checking it out for himself. So it is in<strong>the</strong> story narrated by our text. There is a new rabbi <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> scene but no <strong>on</strong>e <strong>will</strong> buy his messageuntil <strong>the</strong>y have checked him out for <strong>the</strong>mselves <strong>and</strong> so he invites <strong>the</strong>m to come <strong>and</strong> see. For heknows that when <strong>the</strong>y come <strong>and</strong> see <strong>the</strong>y <strong>will</strong> not <strong>be</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>same</strong> <strong>again</strong>.2 John <strong>the</strong> Baptist preaches Jesus as savior but no <strong>on</strong>e buys it.When John was preaching <strong>and</strong> baptizing at <strong>the</strong> Jordan River, <strong>the</strong> Sanhedrin sent a delegati<strong>on</strong> toask whe<strong>the</strong>r he was <strong>the</strong> Christ. He resp<strong>on</strong>ded that he was nei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> Christ, nor Elijah, nor <strong>the</strong>Prophet but told <strong>the</strong>m that he was heralding <strong>the</strong> arrival of <strong>the</strong> Christ who was in <strong>the</strong>ir midst. Thefollowing day during his break from preaching he saw Jesus walking by <strong>and</strong> he <strong>be</strong>gan to preachan evangelistic message pointing to Jesus as <strong>the</strong> “Lamb of God who takes away <strong>the</strong> sin of <strong>the</strong>world!” He told <strong>the</strong> people that Jesus is <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>e <strong>on</strong> whom <strong>the</strong> Spirit of God descended, that he is<strong>the</strong> s<strong>on</strong> of God, <strong>and</strong> that he is <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>e who baptizes in <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit. This was a str<strong>on</strong>gevangelistic message with a “show-<strong>and</strong>-tell” – <strong>the</strong> pers<strong>on</strong> of Jesus! Yet no <strong>on</strong>e resp<strong>on</strong>ded to <strong>the</strong>altar call. It seems John struck out but he didn’t give up.Kwa<strong>be</strong>na Akufo 2

Sometimes you evangelize some<strong>on</strong>e <strong>and</strong> he does not resp<strong>on</strong>d immediately but it is a seed youhave planted. D<strong>on</strong>’t give up for tomorrow is ano<strong>the</strong>r day to try <strong>again</strong>.3 John <strong>the</strong> Baptist preaches Jesus as savior <strong>again</strong> <strong>and</strong> nets two.3.1 Jesus deli<strong>be</strong>rately reveals himself for John’s use in evangelism. The following day about 4:00PM John saw Jesus <strong>again</strong> walking by. I am <strong>be</strong>ginning to thinknow, that Jesus was revealing himself to <strong>the</strong> people. This is a process of gradual revelati<strong>on</strong> thatbrings some<strong>on</strong>e to Christ. One of our bro<strong>the</strong>rs in Bost<strong>on</strong> told me of a woman he was interestedin. He saw <strong>the</strong> woman walking by all <strong>the</strong> time going somewhere. So <strong>on</strong>e day he approached her<strong>and</strong> she invited him to <strong>the</strong> place she was going – church. Being so interested in <strong>the</strong> girl, sheresp<strong>on</strong>ded to <strong>the</strong> invitati<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> rest is history; <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit arrested him that day <strong>and</strong> he<strong>be</strong>came saved <strong>and</strong> Holy Spirit baptized that <strong>same</strong> day!3.2 John successfully evangelizes Andrew <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r disciple. So when John saw Jesus walking by, he changed his preaching into ano<strong>the</strong>r evangelisticmessage. This time two of John’s own disciples, Andrew <strong>and</strong> an unnamed disciple, resp<strong>on</strong>ded to<strong>the</strong> message <strong>and</strong> pursued Jesus. Jesus <strong>the</strong>n asked <strong>the</strong>m what <strong>the</strong>y were seeking. Though Jesusknew what <strong>the</strong>y were looking for, he wanted <strong>the</strong>m to state it. They asked Jesus where he isstaying. They were looking for <strong>the</strong> house of God. Jesus told <strong>the</strong>m “come <strong>and</strong> you <strong>will</strong> see”which has <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>notati<strong>on</strong> “come <strong>and</strong> see <strong>and</strong> you <strong>will</strong> not <strong>be</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>same</strong> <strong>again</strong>.” In effect, Jesustold <strong>the</strong>m if <strong>the</strong>y are truly seeking <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong>y should come <strong>and</strong> check him out for <strong>the</strong>mselves, <strong>the</strong>yshould come <strong>and</strong> taste what was cooking in his house <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y <strong>will</strong> not <strong>be</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>same</strong> <strong>again</strong>. Thetwo disciples went with Jesus <strong>and</strong> spent time with him that day.4 Andrew evangelizes Sim<strong>on</strong> (Peter).4.1 Andrew desires to share <strong>the</strong> good news of Jesus. That day after spending some time with Jesus, Andrew said to himself, this food is so-o good. This Word is so-o extraordinary, so-o supernatural. I can’t keep it for myself. I <strong>will</strong> <strong>be</strong> selfish ifI do not share it. I have to share it with family <strong>and</strong> friends.Kwa<strong>be</strong>na Akufo 3

.2 <strong>You</strong> must also share <strong>the</strong> good news of Jesus <strong>and</strong> Apostolic Church.<strong>You</strong> Apostolic people, you know you have such delicious food you eat every Sunday. It is not<strong>on</strong>ly delicious but it is filling <strong>and</strong> nutritious <strong>and</strong> you are growing into spiritual giants but youhave hoarded <strong>the</strong> food. <strong>You</strong> have <strong>be</strong>en selfish. <strong>You</strong> seldom invite o<strong>the</strong>rs to come <strong>and</strong> enjoy it.God has also spoken in prophecy here about this <strong>be</strong>havior. The time has come for you to <strong>be</strong>ginto invite people to Sunday church. If <strong>the</strong>y questi<strong>on</strong> you just tell <strong>the</strong>m “come <strong>and</strong> see <strong>and</strong> you<strong>will</strong> not <strong>be</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>same</strong> <strong>again</strong>.” Tell <strong>the</strong>m, “<strong>Come</strong> <strong>and</strong> taste that <strong>the</strong> Lord is good.” Tell <strong>the</strong>m, “<strong>the</strong>reis a fountain that is flowing here in Apostolic Church <strong>and</strong> it is full of healing for your soul, yourfinances, your anxiety, your marriage <strong>and</strong> every untenable situati<strong>on</strong>.” Tell <strong>the</strong>m “God himself isin <strong>the</strong> house.”4.3 Andrew successfully evangelizes Sim<strong>on</strong> (Peter). So, Andrew told Jesus, “Hold <strong>on</strong>, I’ll <strong>be</strong> right back. I’ve got some<strong>on</strong>e who’s got to hear thismessage, some<strong>on</strong>e who’s got to check this out, some<strong>on</strong>e who’s got to come <strong>and</strong> see.” Andrewdashed <strong>and</strong> looked for his bro<strong>the</strong>r Sim<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> brought him to Jesus. When Sim<strong>on</strong> got <strong>the</strong>re hewas in for a shock. Jesus told him “<strong>You</strong> are Sim<strong>on</strong>. <strong>You</strong> name is derived from Sime<strong>on</strong> a manwho had temper <strong>and</strong> was diso<strong>be</strong>dient to his fa<strong>the</strong>r Jacob, a covenant breaker who took unjustifiedrevenge <strong>again</strong>st Dinah’s rapist but future husb<strong>and</strong>. <strong>You</strong>r name cannot <strong>be</strong> Sim<strong>on</strong>. <strong>You</strong> name <strong>will</strong>now <strong>be</strong> Cephas – a rock for you <strong>will</strong> st<strong>and</strong> boldly for <strong>the</strong> gospel.” Sim<strong>on</strong> was probably<strong>be</strong>wildered by what had just happened. He came to see <strong>and</strong> he was transformed <strong>and</strong> he was nol<strong>on</strong>ger <strong>the</strong> <strong>same</strong> pers<strong>on</strong> he was just a moment ago.4.4 Evangelize people by asking <strong>the</strong>m to come <strong>and</strong> see.Some<strong>on</strong>e is got to tell <strong>the</strong> people out <strong>the</strong>re to come <strong>and</strong> see. Be an Andrew. Look for yourneighbors, co-workers, family friends, play mates, acquaintances, people you meet in <strong>the</strong> streets<strong>and</strong> in <strong>the</strong> shops. Tell <strong>the</strong>m to just come <strong>and</strong> see <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y <strong>will</strong> not <strong>be</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>same</strong> <strong>again</strong>.Kwa<strong>be</strong>na Akufo 4

Andrew evangelizes Philip. The next day, Andrew thought about going back home to Bethsaida in Galillee. 1 Then hethought <strong>again</strong> about this good news he has <strong>be</strong>en exposed to <strong>and</strong> decided to share it with some<strong>on</strong>efrom his hometown. He found Philip <strong>and</strong> told him <strong>the</strong> good news <strong>and</strong> asked him to come <strong>and</strong> see<strong>and</strong> he <strong>will</strong> not <strong>be</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>same</strong> <strong>again</strong>. Philip came to check out Jesus <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Word took a hold ofPhilip so that when Jesus comm<strong>and</strong>ed him saying “follow me,” he immediately did so. Once<strong>again</strong>, we see that all you have to do is ask your family <strong>and</strong> friends to come <strong>and</strong> check out Jesus.Ask <strong>the</strong>m to come <strong>and</strong> see <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y <strong>will</strong> not <strong>be</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>same</strong> <strong>again</strong>.6 Philip evangelizes Nathanael.6.1 Philip tries unsuccessfully to evangelize Nathanael.Philip was so-o full with <strong>the</strong> Word that it was burning like a fire in his heart, like a fire shut up inhis b<strong>on</strong>es. He could not hold it, he could not keep it to himself so he went looking for his friendNathanael <strong>and</strong> told him, “We have found <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>e Moses wrote about in <strong>the</strong> Law, <strong>and</strong> aboutwhom <strong>the</strong> prophets also wrote-- Jesus of Nazareth, <strong>the</strong> s<strong>on</strong> of Joseph.” (John 1:45) Philipc<strong>on</strong>tinued, “come <strong>and</strong> check him out, come <strong>and</strong> see <strong>and</strong> you <strong>will</strong> not <strong>be</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>same</strong> <strong>again</strong>.” ButNathanael doubted. Some of <strong>the</strong> people you invite <strong>will</strong> doubt but d<strong>on</strong>’t give up. Philip didn’tgive up. He insisted, “Nathanael, just come <strong>and</strong> see for yourself, check him out <strong>and</strong> you <strong>will</strong> not<strong>be</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>same</strong> <strong>again</strong>.”6.2 Nathanael states his objecti<strong>on</strong> to <strong>the</strong> gospel. Then Nathanael finally verbalized his doubt saying, “Nazareth! Can anything good come from<strong>the</strong>re?” (John 1:46) Philip persisted <strong>on</strong> him <strong>and</strong> said, “No obligati<strong>on</strong>s, but do me a favor, justcome <strong>and</strong> check him out, come <strong>and</strong> see <strong>and</strong> you <strong>will</strong> not <strong>be</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>same</strong> <strong>again</strong>.” This exchange iswhat gave rise to <strong>the</strong> s<strong>on</strong>g: “So biribi pa bi <strong>be</strong> tumi afiri Nazareth aba?”1 In John 1:43, while <strong>the</strong> NIV <strong>and</strong> some translati<strong>on</strong>s say Jesus is <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>e who decided to go to Galilee, <strong>the</strong> Greekoriginal uses “he” instead of Jesus as <strong>the</strong> subject of <strong>the</strong> verb translated “decide.” Jesus is, however, <strong>the</strong> subject of<strong>the</strong> verb “say” in <strong>the</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>d half of <strong>the</strong> verse. Based <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> motif of <strong>the</strong> pericope involving ordinary people invitingo<strong>the</strong>rs it seems reas<strong>on</strong>able that Andrew is <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>e who invited Philip, although <strong>the</strong> NIV translati<strong>on</strong> is also plausible.Kwa<strong>be</strong>na Akufo 5

.3 Make <strong>the</strong> reluctant invitee state his objecti<strong>on</strong>s <strong>and</strong> resp<strong>on</strong>d.So, Nathanael relented <strong>and</strong> came to Jesus. So also, you must not give up when your friendcomes out with all kinds of excuses. When he says, “I am tired,” tell him Jesus <strong>will</strong> refresh him. When he says, “I work Sundays,” tell him to take <strong>on</strong>e Sunday off. When he says, “church takestoo l<strong>on</strong>g,” tell him <strong>the</strong> two hours <strong>will</strong> go by without noticing it. When he says, “I <strong>be</strong>have <strong>be</strong>tterthan your church mem<strong>be</strong>rs,” tell him that is why <strong>the</strong>y are in <strong>the</strong> church to heal <strong>the</strong>mselves of<strong>the</strong>ir bad <strong>be</strong>havior.7 Nathanael is transformed <strong>and</strong> worships Jesus.7.1 Nathanael comes to see Jesus <strong>and</strong> he is transformed. When Nathanael finally came to Jesus, Jesus called out to him, “Here is a true Israelite, in whom<strong>the</strong>re is nothing false.” (John 1:47) In effect Jesus told him, “Nathanael, <strong>the</strong> righteous man – aholier than thou pers<strong>on</strong> who does not want to stoop low to come to a Nazarene.” Jesusdiagnosed his c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>, talked to him, <strong>and</strong> c<strong>on</strong>victed him. Nathanael was shaken as he asked,“How do you know me?” Jesus answered him that “I am <strong>the</strong> omniscient God, I know everythingin <strong>the</strong> past, <strong>the</strong> present, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> future for I am <strong>the</strong> creator of <strong>the</strong> world. I saw you under <strong>the</strong> figtree resting <strong>and</strong> meditating <strong>on</strong> your spiritual c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>. <strong>You</strong> have come where <strong>the</strong> answer lies. What you lack is here. What you seek is also here.”7.2 Nathanael worships Jesus.Nathanael was so-o overpowered by <strong>the</strong> presence of Jesus that he worshipped Jesus bowing <strong>and</strong>prostrating <strong>and</strong> proclaiming, “Rabbi, you are <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong> of God; you are <strong>the</strong> King of Israel. (John1:49) <strong>and</strong> singing “Jehovah, you are <strong>the</strong> most High, Jehovah, you are <strong>the</strong> most High God!”The <strong>on</strong>e that doubts str<strong>on</strong>gly is <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>e that succumbs completely. A man’s doubt is no matchfor <strong>the</strong> revelati<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> power of God. When <strong>the</strong> pers<strong>on</strong> you have <strong>be</strong>en inviting c<strong>on</strong>tinues todoubt, c<strong>on</strong>tinue to invite him to come <strong>and</strong> see <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y <strong>will</strong> <strong>never</strong> <strong>be</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>same</strong> <strong>again</strong>.Kwa<strong>be</strong>na Akufo 6
