UT Martin Rodeo History• The BeginningRodeo at the University of Tennesseeat Martin became a collegiate sport inthe fall of 1968, when Glen Bruce, JohnPettit, Tommy Sanders, Clint Callicott,Marvin Youngerman and Danny Gravesapproached Dr. Niels W. “Doc” Robinson,a faculty member in UT Martin’s Schoolof Agriculture, about sponsoring a rodeoteam.Armed with a great love for horses,a basic knowledge of rodeo, and $600from the auction of a Shetland pony, UTMartin’s first team organized and stagedthe university’s first rodeo on MemorialDay weekend, 1969.Four teams competed in the inauguralevent at J.E. Cantwell’s Golden SunsetHorse Ranch in Greenfield. UT Martin’scowboys defeated teams from MiddleTennessee State University, TennesseeTechnological University and Austin PeayState University to claim the first UTMartin Rodeo Invitational Championship.• The SeventiesFollowing the initial success of theyoung team, UTM’s rodeo moved in 1970to the Obion County Fairgrounds, whereUTM cowboys, faculty members, andstudent volunteers built the corral fromdonated materials. UT Martin won its ownrodeo for the next three years, defeatingteams from Tennessee and an entry fromEast Texas State in 1972.Two events in 1973 marked the turningpoint for UTM’s rodeo program. First, theteam joined the National IntercollegiateRodeo Association (NIRA), the governingorganization for collegiate rodeo in theUnited States. UT Martin also became amember of the tough Ozark Region thatincluded 13 schools from eight Southernstates. That year, UT Martin ranked 13th ina field of 13 Ozark teams. However, brighter days were aheadfor UTM’s cowboys. That same year, EdColeman, the father of a young UTMcowboy, Tony Coleman (who would go onto become a national champion) becameinterested in UTM’s rodeo program. TheGoodlettsville businessman supported theteam whole-heartedly, providing fundingand tremendous moral support. As theresult of increased support, hard work anddetermination, UT Martin’s rodeo teammade history in 1974.UTM cowboys rode hard, placingsecond in the region to a strong Arkansas-Beebe team, and earning the team’sfirst trip to the NIRA national finals inBozeman, Mont. UT Martin’s appearancewas the first ever by a team east ofthe Mississippi River at the nationalchampionship. When the team returned toMartin, members were delighted to learnthat a $400 scholarship fund had beenThe best BRAND inhometown banking!Heritage Bank can round up every banking service you could everneed, and then some! TIMED EVENTSTeam RopingAn event that owes its very existence to the everydaychores of the working cowboy, is Team Roping. On anopen range, it is often necessary to catch an animal inorder to doctor or brand it. This is where the first teamroping took place. In rodeo competition today, teamroping is a co-ed event. The header starts the time whenhe/she lunges out of the chute in pursuit of the runawaysteer. His job is to rope the steer’s horns, take a dallyby wrapping the loose end of his rope around the saddlehorn, and turn the steer away from his partner. Withtremendous skill and accurate timing, the heeler thenropes the steer’s hind legs and take his dally. When both header and heeler face their horses toward the steer, time stops. If only one hind leg is caught, the team receives a five-second penalty, which makes this eventeven more difficult. Because of the excellent teamwork involved, and the fact that both sexes can enter – thiscontest is a favorite by many.Tie DownThe grace and beauty of true horsemanship along withathletic skills of both horse and rider is evidenced inthis popular event. Tie Down is a race against time withseconds counted in decimal points. To win, horse andrider must work together with precision teamwork. Thecontest begins when the calf is released from a chutewith rider and horse chasing behind. A good horse willcarry its rider in perfect accord with every move of thecalf and when the loop is thrown will “stop on a dime”allowing the roper to dismount, run down the rope, throw the calf, and tie any three legs with a “piggin’string.” To rope “in the money” all must be done in amatter of seconds, and the roper’s tie must hold afterhe has signaled “all done” with hands in the air.Steer WrestlingSteer Wrestling, also called “bulldoggin,” is an event that requiresnot only speed and agility but also physical size and strength. Whena man drops from a thundering horse onto a running steer, stops thesteer, and throws him to the ground – spectators see athletic skillovercome heavily weighted odds. In keeping with the sharing andhelping character of rodeo, the steer wrestler is allowed a partner, called a “hazer,” to aid him in lining up the charging steer. Thisassistance helps to assure perfect placement of the steer and horsebefore the cowboy dismounts. The time stops after the contestanthas thrown and turned the steer’s head and all four feet are out inthe same direction. The BarrierIn all timed events, the element of “fair time” is extended even to the calves and steers. Before the competition begins, the lengths of the “barrier” ropes are predetermined. After the longest rope is stretched across the box, it is tied ontoa shorter piece of rope around the calf’s neck with a breakable cotton string. When the calf runs from the chute, he willpull the barrier rope when he has reached a fair distance to insure a head start. However, if the rider and horse break thebarrier stretched across the box before the calf or steer does, the rider will be assessed a ten-second penalty.46

Break-Away RopingAs a sign of our changing times and equal opportunity,Women’s Breakaway Roping is a modification andadaption of the Men’s Tie-Down roping. To win in thisevent, not only must the cowgirl become a talentedexpert at roping calves, she must also be mounted ona very well trained horse. The horse must leave the boxwith a great burst of speed to catch the calf a shortdistance outside the gate. The loop is dabbed aroundthe escaping calf’s head and the rope, which is tied tothe saddlehorn, breaks away from the saddle when theslack is pulled tight. A handkerchief is tied to the end of the rope, to signal the moment the time should stop. This event is complicated by the dashing and darting action of the calves, so contestants carry two ropes, incase they miss with their first throw. Similar to the men’s timed events, the girl, too, must start from behind apulled barrier.Goat TyingWOMEN’S EVENTSGoat tying is the only girls’ event that requires fast footwork andagile dexterity on the ground, as well as basic horsemanshipskills. There is a goat tied to a rope at the time end of thearena. The cowgirl’s time begins when she crosses the startingline at the other end of the arena at a full run. She chargesdown the arena, stops at the goat, dismounts running, catchesthe squirming goat, throws him down, and ties any three legs.In this event, a leather rope or string is used for tying. The timestops when she signals the end of her tie by throwing her handsin the air. The goat must stay tied for 5 seconds in order for thecontestant to receive a qualifying time.Barrel RacingThe oldest and most competitive girls’ event in college rodeo is theCloverleaf Barrel Race. The horses ridden in this event are highlytrained and extremely athletic, matching their speed and turns tothe cues given by their riders. The determined rider and her mountmust make two turns one direction and one in the other around threebarrels. These barrels are set in a triangular pattern, a prescribeddistance apart. The clock stops when the girl and horse crossthe same line after completing their run. Winners are many timesdetermined by differences of less than a tenth of a second, so thefive-second penalty for an overturned barrel can be devastating.Excellent balance and horsemanship are a must. This event iscertainly one of sheer elegance and precise timing.47

RIDING EVENTSSaddle Bronc RidingConsidered by the most as the classic rodeo event, Saddle BrocRiding is no beginner’s event. There’s a reason – the instinctivereactions required to keep in the stirrups, a sense of what a horsewill do next, and the ability to synchronize with a bronc’s movement– make this event one with no substitute for years of experience.Since there is nothing solid to hold onto, a cowboy can only stay inthe saddle through timing and balance. The proven rider deliberatelymatches his spurring action with the bucking bronc’s rhythm beneathhim, making the whole rider appear smooth.Bareback RidingBareback Riding is that wild, spurring event which illustrates thatold saying “There never was a hoss that couldn’t be rode, and therenever was a cowboy that couldn’t be throwed.” From the momentthe gate swings open and the horse and rider explode from thechute, both must perform exceptionally well if the cowboy is to win.A suitcase-like handle is attached to the top of a leather “riggin”cinched around the horse’s middle. The contestant grips this handlewith one hand and keeps his other hand free and high in the air.Ideally, bareback riders want to try to spur the horse with each jump, reaching as far forward as they can with their feet, then jerking theirspurs upwards toward the rigging. The longer the spurring strokealong the horse’s neck, the higher the ride is scored.Bull RidingThe most popular rodeo riding event, and the most dangerous, is the Bull Riding. Aloose rope straps a man’s hand to a ton of explosive power. Because the cowboynever knows what the animal beneath him is going to do next, he must draw uponhis sharpest physical and mental abilities when trying to conquer this twistingtornado. To keep his position and balance, a bull rider is constantly grabbing fornew holds with his feet and continually pulling up on the rope. The more powerful abull bucks and the faster he spins, the more points the ride is worth. A bull rider isunquestionably a breed apart with the courage and determination to be the victor inthis contest between man and beast.Points to Consider1. The cowboy holds on with one hand and must keep the other hand high in the air. Touching any part of himself or theanimal receives a “no score.”2. The rider must stay aboard his draw for a full eight seconds.3. There are two judges in the riding events who score the cowboys and the livestock they ride. Both judges mark the riderfrom 0-25 and his stock from 0-25.4. To make a qualified ride, a bareback or saddle bronc rider must “mark the horse out” by having his spurs over thehorse’s shoulders when the animal’s front feet touch the ground, the first jump out of the chute.5. Since spurring is not required in bull riding as it is in other events, a bull rider may earn extra points by spurring.6. Animals are awards points for hard bucking, high kicking, lunging, twisting, and spinning. The harder he is to ride, themore points his performance is worth.48

Thank You DAN POSTFor the past three years, the Dan Post Boot Company, located in Clarksville, Tennessee has donated a pairof boots to each member of the rodeo team and both coaches. They have developed a group of boots calledDan Post Cowboy Certified, geared toward the boot wearer who wears boots every day and rides horses. UTMRodeo alumni Bill Hoy approached Dan Post about a partnership whereby Dan Post would provide CowboyCertified boots for the rodeo team and coaches. The idea turned into a win-win opportunity for both parties andhas benefited each tremendously. One of the rodeo team members who wears his Dan Post boots regularly inregional competition and at the past College National Finals Rodeo, John Alley states, “I think they are a greatboot. They are very durable and I can wear them in and out of the arena”. Coach John Luthi thinks the Dan PostBoot Company is a great sponsor for our team.“I wear my Dan Post boots every day. They not only wear well, but they are verycomfortable. We sure appreciate Dan Post Boot Company’s support and sponsorship.”What does Dan Post get from this partnership? An opportunity to be affiliated with and to support a successfulcollege rodeo team. They also receive important product feedback from competitors that put their boots to thetest. Ken Moore, president of Dan Post Boot Co. says “We are proud to provide Dan Post boots to the UTMrodeo team and appreciate the commitment and dedication of these student athletes and their coaches.”Dan Post Boot Company markets and distributes around the world with these brands: Dan Post, CowboyCertified, Dingo, Laredo Western Boots, McRae Industrial, and is the authorized licensee for John Deere boots. You can find more information at danpostboots.com.88
