<strong>He</strong> Guides Me <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Paths <strong>of</strong> Righteousness Psalm 23:3bIsaiah 53:6If you are a true follower <strong>of</strong> Jesus you will know <strong>the</strong> right way to liveAll <strong>of</strong> us, like sheep, have strayed away. We have left God's <strong>paths</strong> toyour life <strong>in</strong> a manner that is pleas<strong>in</strong>g to God.follow our own. Yet <strong>the</strong> LORD laid on Him <strong>the</strong> s<strong>in</strong>s <strong>of</strong> us all. John 10:27-28That <strong>me</strong>ans that we wander <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> path that God has directed <strong>for</strong> us.On this path we (sheep) can be bl<strong>in</strong>ded to what can be harmful to us.[Teacher, bl<strong>in</strong>dfold <strong>the</strong> “sheep” volunteer.] Sheep, we’re go<strong>in</strong>g towatch you take care <strong>of</strong> yourself. Get down on all fours. Use yourhands to stay on <strong>the</strong> “path”. Keep go<strong>in</strong>g until you th<strong>in</strong>k you havearrived at <strong>the</strong> “green pasture” at <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> trail. Go now.[Teacher, stay<strong>in</strong>g a few feet <strong>in</strong> front <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> “sheep,” quietly drop th<strong>in</strong>gs<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> path <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> “sheep” to crawl through, such as wet noodles, etc.]Bible Story CenterTurn <strong>in</strong> your Bibles to Mat<strong>the</strong>w 7.Mat<strong>the</strong>w 7:14-15But <strong>the</strong> gateway to life is very narrow and <strong>the</strong> road is difficult, and only afew ever f<strong>in</strong>d it. Beware <strong>of</strong> false prophets who co<strong>me</strong> disguised asharmless sheep but are really vicious wolves.So<strong>me</strong> people th<strong>in</strong>k that <strong>the</strong>re are many ways to heaven. But Jesussays that <strong>the</strong> gateway <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom <strong>of</strong> God is hard to f<strong>in</strong>d andmany <strong>of</strong> Satan’s hench<strong>me</strong>n will try to misdirect you.How hard was it <strong>for</strong> our sheep to f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> narrow gate with <strong>the</strong>bl<strong>in</strong>dfold on? That is why we need a shepherd to lead us. And ourShepherd is Jesus.John 14:6Jesus told him, "I am <strong>the</strong> way, <strong>the</strong> truth, and <strong>the</strong> life. No one can co<strong>me</strong> to<strong>the</strong> Fa<strong>the</strong>r except through Me.My sheep listen to My voice; I know <strong>the</strong>m, and <strong>the</strong>y follow Me. I give<strong>the</strong>m eternal life, and <strong>the</strong>y will never perish. No one can snatch <strong>the</strong>maway from Me,The Good Shepherd knows <strong>the</strong> best way to go. <strong>He</strong> leads his flockalong <strong>paths</strong> that are safe to travel. <strong>He</strong> takes <strong>the</strong>m to <strong>the</strong> richestpastures and to <strong>the</strong> best places to dr<strong>in</strong>k.But so<strong>me</strong>ti<strong>me</strong>s a sheep will wander away from <strong>the</strong> flock. It’s hard tounderstand why a sheep that is well-cared <strong>for</strong> would want to leave itsshepherd, but <strong>the</strong>y do from ti<strong>me</strong> to ti<strong>me</strong>. Usually it’s because <strong>the</strong>yaren’t pay<strong>in</strong>g attention; <strong>the</strong>y aren’t keep<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir eye on <strong>the</strong> shepherd. They go <strong>of</strong>f on <strong>the</strong>ir own to eat outside <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pasture. When a sheepwanders away from <strong>the</strong> protection <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> shepherd it can be verydangerous <strong>for</strong> it.God’s children so<strong>me</strong>ti<strong>me</strong>s behave that way, too. We are all born witha “want to” to follow our own way ra<strong>the</strong>r than God’s way. Westubbornly decide NOT to follow God. When we, like sheep, stray wayand leave God’s path <strong>of</strong> <strong>righteousness</strong>, we can f<strong>in</strong>d ourselves <strong>in</strong> deeptrouble. What are so<strong>me</strong> wrong <strong>paths</strong> that people follow? [Teacher, enterta<strong>in</strong>ideas like ly<strong>in</strong>g, cheat<strong>in</strong>g, steal<strong>in</strong>g, or be<strong>in</strong>g unk<strong>in</strong>d to o<strong>the</strong>r kids. Olderchildren might <strong>me</strong>ntion drugs, sex, dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g, etc.]When we choose to go our own way and s<strong>in</strong> aga<strong>in</strong>st Him, we cannotbla<strong>me</strong> God <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>me</strong>ss we create <strong>for</strong> ourselves. The good news is that our Good Shepherd is always watch<strong>in</strong>g over usand <strong>He</strong> knows when we are cast down and will gently and lov<strong>in</strong>glyrestore us.There is no o<strong>the</strong>r way to get <strong>in</strong>to <strong>He</strong>aven; you must co<strong>me</strong> by way <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> Good Shepherd who is <strong>the</strong> gateway <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> sheepfold.Page 36 Psalm 23 Lesson #6

Psalm 23:3b <strong>He</strong> Guides Me <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Paths <strong>of</strong> RighteousnessLet’s read a Bible story that shows how God lead a man on <strong>the</strong> <strong>paths</strong><strong>of</strong> <strong>righteousness</strong>.After Jesus ascended back up <strong>in</strong>to heaven, <strong>His</strong> disciples startedspread<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> good news about what Jesus had done <strong>for</strong> mank<strong>in</strong>d.This made many <strong>of</strong> leaders <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Jews angry.Jesus’ followers <strong>in</strong> Jerusalem suffered dreadful persecution <strong>for</strong> tell<strong>in</strong>go<strong>the</strong>rs about Jesus. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> chief persecutors was a man na<strong>me</strong>dSaul. How he hated <strong>the</strong> “Christians”!Wherever Saul went he uttered murderous threats aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong>followers <strong>of</strong> Jesus. From house to house he went, dragg<strong>in</strong>g out <strong>the</strong>believers and hav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m thrown <strong>in</strong>to jail and put to death withoutgood cause.Hundreds <strong>of</strong> Christians fled from <strong>the</strong> city, but Saul was determ<strong>in</strong>ed totrack <strong>the</strong>m down. When he heard that so<strong>me</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m had traveled 150miles away to Damascus, he set <strong>of</strong>f with troops to drag <strong>the</strong>m back <strong>in</strong>cha<strong>in</strong>s. <strong>He</strong> was determ<strong>in</strong>ed to wipe out Jesus’ followers <strong>the</strong>re, too. ButGod had o<strong>the</strong>r plans <strong>for</strong> him!Open your Bibles to Acts 9.Acts 9:1-2Meanwhile, Saul was utter<strong>in</strong>g threats with every breath and was eager tokill <strong>the</strong> Lord's followers. So he went to <strong>the</strong> high priest. <strong>He</strong> requestedletters addressed to <strong>the</strong> synagogues <strong>in</strong> Damascus, ask<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>ircooperation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> arrest <strong>of</strong> any followers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Way he found <strong>the</strong>re. <strong>He</strong>wanted to br<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m—both <strong>me</strong>n and wo<strong>me</strong>n—back to Jerusalem <strong>in</strong>cha<strong>in</strong>s.Saul went to <strong>the</strong> high priest <strong>for</strong> letters that would grant him authority toarrest believers <strong>in</strong> Damascus and have <strong>the</strong>m taken back to Jerusalemto be put <strong>in</strong> prison.Saul was a Pharisee, a leader <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Jews. <strong>He</strong> knew <strong>the</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> Old Testa<strong>me</strong>nt well. But, he did not believe that Jesus was God orthat <strong>He</strong> had risen from <strong>the</strong> dead. <strong>He</strong> punished Jesus’ followersbecause he thought <strong>the</strong>y were teach<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>in</strong>gs aga<strong>in</strong>st what heunderstood <strong>the</strong> Bible to teach. <strong>He</strong> thought he was pleas<strong>in</strong>g God bytry<strong>in</strong>g to elim<strong>in</strong>ate Christians! <strong>He</strong> was passionate <strong>for</strong> pleas<strong>in</strong>g God,but he didn’t know <strong>the</strong> truth about God.As Saul traveled along <strong>the</strong> road to Damascus, so<strong>me</strong>th<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>crediblehappened.Acts 9:3-4As he was approach<strong>in</strong>g Damascus on this mission, a light from heavensuddenly shone down around him. <strong>He</strong> fell to <strong>the</strong> ground and heard avoice say<strong>in</strong>g to him, "Saul! Saul! Why are you persecut<strong>in</strong>g Me?"Saul and his <strong>me</strong>n had nearly reached Damascus when suddenly, atabout midday, Saul was suddenly bl<strong>in</strong>ded by flash <strong>of</strong> light <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> skyand <strong>the</strong> Lord spoke to him and he fell to <strong>the</strong> ground.Acts 9:5-6"Who are You, lord?" Saul asked. And <strong>the</strong> voice replied, "I am Jesus, <strong>the</strong> one you are persecut<strong>in</strong>g! Now getup and go <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> city, and you will be told what you must do."In this dramatic mo<strong>me</strong>nt, Saul believed that Jesus is <strong>the</strong> Christ, <strong>the</strong>One God had promised <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> scriptures to send to save everyonefrom <strong>the</strong>ir s<strong>in</strong>s. God wanted Saul to see that Jesus had truly risenfrom <strong>the</strong> dead and <strong>me</strong>t him on <strong>the</strong> road <strong>in</strong> this spectacular way!Even though Saul had persecuted and even ordered Christians to beput to death, because <strong>of</strong> God’s great love <strong>for</strong> Saul, God showed himthat Jesus really is alive! God wants to do that <strong>for</strong> every human be<strong>in</strong>gthat ever lived.Acts 9:7-9The <strong>me</strong>n with Saul stood speechless, <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>y heard <strong>the</strong> sound <strong>of</strong>so<strong>me</strong>one's voice but saw no one! Saul picked himself up <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> ground, but when he opened his eyes he was bl<strong>in</strong>d. So his companions led himby <strong>the</strong> hand to Damascus. <strong>He</strong> rema<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong>re bl<strong>in</strong>d <strong>for</strong> three days anddid not eat or dr<strong>in</strong>k.Psalm 23 Lesson #6 Page 37

<strong>He</strong> Guides Me <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Paths <strong>of</strong> Righteousness Psalm 23:3bSaul's soldiers probably saw him stagger to his feet. They had to leadhim like a bl<strong>in</strong>d man to Damascus. After three days, God sent help.Acts 9:10-12Now <strong>the</strong>re was a believer <strong>in</strong> Damascus na<strong>me</strong>d Ananias. The Lord spoketo him <strong>in</strong> a vision, call<strong>in</strong>g, "Ananias!""Yes, Lord!" he replied. The Lord said, "Go over to Straight Street, to <strong>the</strong> house <strong>of</strong> Judas. Whenyou get <strong>the</strong>re, ask <strong>for</strong> a man from Tarsus na<strong>me</strong>d Saul. <strong>He</strong> is pray<strong>in</strong>g toMe right now. I have shown him a vision <strong>of</strong> a man na<strong>me</strong>d Ananiascom<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> and lay<strong>in</strong>g hands on him so he can see aga<strong>in</strong>."Wow! All <strong>the</strong> believers had heard <strong>of</strong> this man, Saul, who wasmarch<strong>in</strong>g to Damascus to arrest all <strong>the</strong> Christians. What do you th<strong>in</strong>k was go<strong>in</strong>g through Ananias' m<strong>in</strong>d at this po<strong>in</strong>t?[Teacher, let <strong>the</strong> children respond.] First, he was probably awe struckby hav<strong>in</strong>g a vision <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lord speak<strong>in</strong>g to him; it’s not every day wehave an actual conversation with <strong>the</strong> Creator <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> universe! But, heprobably was also afraid to face Saul. Ananias was probably terrified.Acts 9:13-16"But Lord," exclai<strong>me</strong>d Ananias, "I've heard many people talk about <strong>the</strong>terrible th<strong>in</strong>gs this man has done to <strong>the</strong> believers <strong>in</strong> Jerusalem! And he isauthorized by <strong>the</strong> lead<strong>in</strong>g priests to arrest everyone who calls upon Yourna<strong>me</strong>."But <strong>the</strong> Lord said, "Go, <strong>for</strong> Saul is My chosen <strong>in</strong>stru<strong>me</strong>nt to take My<strong>me</strong>ssage to <strong>the</strong> Gentiles and to k<strong>in</strong>gs, as well as to <strong>the</strong> people <strong>of</strong> Israel. And I will show him how much he must suffer <strong>for</strong> My na<strong>me</strong>'s <strong>sake</strong>."What would you have done if you had been Ananias? It must havebeen hard, but Ananias was obedient to <strong>the</strong> Lord and went to Saul.We must obey and follow God’s lead<strong>in</strong>g, even when he leads us todifficult people and places.Acts 9:17-19So Ananias went and found Saul. <strong>He</strong> laid his hands on him and said,"Bro<strong>the</strong>r Saul, <strong>the</strong> Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on <strong>the</strong> road, hassent <strong>me</strong> so that you might rega<strong>in</strong> your sight and be filled with <strong>the</strong> HolySpirit." Instantly so<strong>me</strong>th<strong>in</strong>g like scales fell from Saul's eyes, and herega<strong>in</strong>ed his sight. Then he got up and was baptized. Afterward he ateso<strong>me</strong> food and rega<strong>in</strong>ed his strength. Saul stayed with <strong>the</strong> believers <strong>in</strong>Damascus <strong>for</strong> a few days. That day, Saul's body received a heal<strong>in</strong>g and his m<strong>in</strong>d received aheal<strong>in</strong>g as well. As <strong>the</strong> bl<strong>in</strong>ders fell from his eyes, Saul was able tosee both physically and spiritually. As a sign <strong>of</strong> his conversion, Saulwas baptized and began his new life as God’s chosen apostle.God had sent Ananias to encourage Saul and give him excit<strong>in</strong>g news.Ananias told this new believer about <strong>the</strong> special plans that God had<strong>for</strong> his life. God has special plans <strong>for</strong> your life, too. God promises tolead us and guide us every day. <strong>He</strong> will direct our steps if we just askHim to show us <strong>the</strong> way and trust that <strong>His</strong> way is <strong>the</strong> best <strong>for</strong> us.Saul, now a believer, is full <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit and beg<strong>in</strong>s to boldlypreach <strong>the</strong> good news about Jesus, how <strong>He</strong> ca<strong>me</strong> and died <strong>for</strong> ours<strong>in</strong>s, was resurrected, and ascended <strong>in</strong>to heaven.Acts 9:20-22And im<strong>me</strong>diately he began preach<strong>in</strong>g about Jesus <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> synagogues,say<strong>in</strong>g, "<strong>He</strong> is <strong>in</strong>deed <strong>the</strong> Son <strong>of</strong> God!" All who heard him were amazed."Isn't this <strong>the</strong> sa<strong>me</strong> man who caused such devastation among Jesus'followers <strong>in</strong> Jerusalem?" <strong>the</strong>y asked. "And didn't he co<strong>me</strong> here to arrest<strong>the</strong>m and take <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> cha<strong>in</strong>s to <strong>the</strong> lead<strong>in</strong>g priests?" Saul's preach<strong>in</strong>gbeca<strong>me</strong> more and more powerful, and <strong>the</strong> Jews <strong>in</strong> Damascus couldn'trefute his pro<strong>of</strong>s that Jesus was <strong>in</strong>deed <strong>the</strong> Messiah. What a strange twist <strong>of</strong> fate <strong>for</strong> Saul, who set out to destroyChristianity, to suddenly beco<strong>me</strong> <strong>the</strong> most well-known <strong>of</strong> all God’sapostles. What do you th<strong>in</strong>k might have happened if Saul did not follow <strong>the</strong>Lord’s lead<strong>in</strong>g?Saul did more to help spread Christianity throughout <strong>the</strong> whole worldthan any o<strong>the</strong>r s<strong>in</strong>gle person.
