GENERAL SYLLABUS FOR THIRD CYCLE STUDIES<strong>For</strong> <strong>Degree</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Doctor</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>History</strong>at University <strong>of</strong> Gothenburg2015 and follow<strong>in</strong>g approval by the Department, be considered to also meet the specificentry requirements set out <strong>in</strong> the present programme syllabus.The applicant is required to have good read<strong>in</strong>g skills <strong>in</strong> the languages necessary for thecourse requirements and an active participation <strong>in</strong> sem<strong>in</strong>ar activities.Depend<strong>in</strong>g on the applicant's research focus special language skills may be necessary.3. Admission and selectionThe selection among qualified applicants shall be based on their ability to benefit from thestudy programme, as provided <strong>in</strong> Chapter 7 <strong>of</strong> the Higher Education Ord<strong>in</strong>ance. To facilitatethe selection process, the applicant must submit:- theses, degree projects and other relevant publications- a project draft <strong>in</strong>dicat<strong>in</strong>g the applicant’s desired focus area as well as which theories,methods and material may come <strong>in</strong>to question.Project drafts are assessed based on the follow<strong>in</strong>g criteria: a) The relevance <strong>of</strong> the researchproject (the significance <strong>of</strong> the formulated research question with<strong>in</strong> the subject, its relationto theory and previous research <strong>in</strong> the area. b) The feasibility <strong>of</strong> the research project(relevant methods and sources). c) The orig<strong>in</strong>ality <strong>of</strong> the research project (<strong>in</strong>dependence <strong>in</strong>relation to the knowledge development <strong>of</strong> the subject).Admission and selection are also conditional on the Department’s supervisory resources with<strong>in</strong> thedoctoral student’s research focus. Admission decisions are made by the Head <strong>of</strong> Department follow<strong>in</strong>gpreparation at the Department.4. Programme disposition and contentPostgraduate studies <strong>in</strong> <strong>History</strong> comprise 240 HE credits and ends with a doctoral degree. It is possible totake a licentiate degree after 120 credits if the requirements set out <strong>in</strong> the general syllabus for licentiatedegrees <strong>in</strong> <strong>History</strong> have been fulfilled.<strong>Doctor</strong>al education consists <strong>of</strong> courses, which will be exam<strong>in</strong>ed subsequently, and thepostgraduate’s own research which will lead to a scientific thesis.The doctoral student is also expected to participate <strong>in</strong> sem<strong>in</strong>ars and, unless there are specialreasons, to participate <strong>in</strong> the department's jo<strong>in</strong>t activities.4.1 CoursesThe programme consists <strong>of</strong> a course part compris<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> 60 HE credits, <strong>of</strong> which 23 credits consist <strong>of</strong> thefollow<strong>in</strong>g required courses/studies.Introductory course, Historical Studies, 1.5 credits4(6)


GENERAL SYLLABUS FOR THIRD CYCLE STUDIES<strong>For</strong> <strong>Degree</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Doctor</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>History</strong>at University <strong>of</strong> GothenburgTeach<strong>in</strong>g and learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Higher Education 5 credits (completed teacher tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g deemedequivalent)Supervised teach<strong>in</strong>g 1.5 credits (see separate syllabus)Research practice 7.5 hp (article writ<strong>in</strong>g, conference participation, conference arrangements,field work, field trips and more, see separate syllabus)Theory Course / Theoretical Study 7,5Other course credits are obta<strong>in</strong>ed through thematic studies where the aim is to both deepenand broaden the doctoral student's knowledge. <strong>For</strong> the former, part <strong>of</strong> the course creditsmay be awarded for read<strong>in</strong>g literature on their current research field, the ma<strong>in</strong> part shall,however, be used for the latter <strong>in</strong> order that the student acquires knowledge outside theirown field <strong>of</strong> research. The contents <strong>of</strong> the courses are determ<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> consultation with thesupervisor.Exam<strong>in</strong>ation is written or oral.If a doctoral student would like to apply credits from previous education, this must be<strong>in</strong>dicated <strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>dividual study plan (see 6.1).4.2 <strong>Doctor</strong>al thesisThe thesis corresponds to 180 HE credits. It may be written as a monograph or as acompilation thesis. A licentiate thesis can be <strong>in</strong>cluded as part <strong>of</strong> a doctoral thesis, eitherrevised or unrevised.The doctoral student is expected to provide regular reports regard<strong>in</strong>g the progression <strong>of</strong> their thesis work.This obligation is primarily fulfilled through presentation <strong>of</strong> thesis memos at Department sem<strong>in</strong>ars.Before the decision on public defence, a rough manuscript <strong>of</strong> a full dissertation should be exam<strong>in</strong>ed at aso-called f<strong>in</strong>al sem<strong>in</strong>ar.<strong>For</strong> more <strong>in</strong>formation see Instructions for the production <strong>of</strong> a doctoral thesis.<strong>Doctor</strong>al theses are defended at a public defence event. Both the content and defence areconsidered <strong>in</strong> the assessment <strong>of</strong> a doctoral thesis. <strong>Doctor</strong>al theses are graded Pass or Fail.<strong>For</strong> more <strong>in</strong>formation see Instructions for the public defence <strong>of</strong> a doctoral thesis.5. SupervisionAt least two supervisors shall be appo<strong>in</strong>ted for each doctoral student: one pr<strong>in</strong>cipalsupervisor and one or more assistant/second supervisor(s). At least one <strong>of</strong> the supervisorsmust be employed at the University <strong>of</strong> Gothenburg, normally at the doctoral student’s homeDepartment. At least one <strong>of</strong> the supervisors shall be qualified for appo<strong>in</strong>tment to areadership (Docent) and at least one <strong>of</strong> the supervisors shall have completed supervisortra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.5(6)


GENERAL SYLLABUS FOR THIRD CYCLE STUDIES<strong>For</strong> <strong>Degree</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Doctor</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>History</strong>at University <strong>of</strong> GothenburgThe doctoral student is entitled to supervision as stipulated by the Faculty Board (see Instructions forthird cycle studies at the Faculty <strong>of</strong> Arts).A doctoral student may request to change supervisors.6. Individual study planAn <strong>in</strong>dividual study plan shall be drawn up for each doctoral student <strong>in</strong> connection with theadmission. The plan shall be adopted with<strong>in</strong> three months after admission follow<strong>in</strong>gconsultation with the doctoral student and his or her supervisors.The <strong>in</strong>dividual study plan shall be reviewed at least once a year. The review shall clearlyidentify the doctoral student‘s progression.The doctoral student, supervisor and Deputy Head <strong>of</strong> Department <strong>in</strong> charge <strong>of</strong> third-cyclestudies shall, <strong>in</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g, confirm that they have reviewed the <strong>in</strong>dividual study plan and allrevisions made, if any.6.1 Credit transferWhen the <strong>in</strong>dividual study plan is established, the doctoral student may request that creditsbe transferred from past successfully completed second- or third-cycle education. Creditsapplied to fulfil the general or specific entry requirements may not be applied towards thethird-cycle degree, but must be replaced with another course. In addition, the follow<strong>in</strong>gapplies:A doctoral student who has completed parts <strong>of</strong> the third-cycle programme while enrolled asa third-cycle student at another higher education <strong>in</strong>stitution or <strong>in</strong> a different subject mayrequest that these parts be applied directly to his/her degree without replacements. Thisaffects the duration <strong>of</strong> the study programme, which is reduced <strong>in</strong> proportion to the creditstransferred.6.2 Time table and fund<strong>in</strong>g planThe <strong>in</strong>dividual study plan shall <strong>in</strong>clude a time plan as well as a fund<strong>in</strong>g plan for the entire period <strong>of</strong> study,mean<strong>in</strong>g until the planned date <strong>of</strong> the public defence <strong>of</strong> the thesis.7. Transitional provisions<strong>Doctor</strong>al students admitted before 1 st July 2007 may, follow<strong>in</strong>g consultation with thesupervisor, request permission from the Head <strong>of</strong> Department to transfer to this study plan.The <strong>in</strong>dividual plan shall then be updated.6(6)
