30Technology is at theheart of the V8 Vantage, from the uniquebonded structure to thesophisticated electronicsthat deliver both powerand entertainment. Theintegrated Apple iPod ®connection allows you tobring together two iconsof contemporary design.

34The Emotion ControlUnit, or ECU, connectsyou to the heart of thecar. This sophisticatedstainless steel andglass device is insertedinto the centre of theV8 Vantage’s dashand then pressed tofire the glorioussounding313 kW(420 bhp) V8 engine.

38The V8 Vantage Coupeand V8 Vantage Roadsterwere developed alongsideone another, using the corestrength of Aston Martin’sVH platform to ensure thatthe Roadster deliversoutstanding levels of rigidity. When raised, theRoadster’s lightweightfabric hood followsthe Coupe’s curves, creating an aggressive, powerful stance. When open, theRoadster’s lines areunbroken, flowingsmoothly from bonnetto rear spoiler.

42The Roadster’sdesign epitomisespurity of vision andcareful attention todetail. Every singleelement is arrangedin harmony, complemented byAston Martin’ssignature features:minimal shut lines, iconic grille andside strake.

46Honed on one of theworld’s greatest racecircuits, the Nürburgring’sNordschleife in Germany, the V8 Vantage exploitsits near-perfect weightdistribution and balance todeliver precision handlingin a variety of conditions. In addition, high-speedtesting was undertakenat the famous ItalianNardo circuit, ensuring thatthe car has the outrightperformance to match itsoutstanding handling andbraking capabilities.

52The V8 Vantageis engineered forperformance andprecision, encouragingcomplete synthesisbetween driver andmachine. From thealuminium dials onthe driver-focuseddashboard to theergonomic simplicityof the switchgear, the interior feels justright, connecting thedriver to the road likenever before.

54Craftsmanship isa crucial part ofAston Martin’s meticulousapproach to buildingcars, demonstrated bythe hand-stitching onthe leather interior. Thisis a job that demandsskills and precisionhoned over time.Ultra-fast paddleshift-operatedgearchanges are madeusing the Sportshiftoption, an automatedmanual transmissiondeveloped by AstonMartin to integratedriver and machineeven more closely.

56Few open-topped sportscars offer the driver suchan invigorating ride, especially through thislandscape of contrastsand sudden changes. Both sports car andlong-distance tourer, with either an exhilaratingopen cockpit or anall-enveloping hood, the V8 Vantage Roadstercan be cold-bloodedin its efficiency or thehottest car on the road.

60ASTON MARTIN V8 VANTAGEThe Aston Martin V8 Vantage is a supreme example ofmodern automotive design, a hand-crafted sports carthat offers exceptional performance, outstanding agilityand everyday usability. At the heart of every great sports car is a great engine, and the V8 Vantage Coupe and Roadster are poweredby Aston Martin’s 313 kW (420 bhp) 4.7-litre V8, developedfor both flexibility and outright performance. The V8 alsosounds spectacular and is capable of propelling the carto a maximum speed of 290 km/h (180 mph). The V8 Vantage is a true high-performance sports car.The engine is so willing, the handling so predictable, thevisibility so good and the controls so easy to use that it isas comfortable in town or city as it is on winding countryroads or even a demanding race circuit. The V8 Vantage epitomises Aston Martin’s approach todesign: a commitment to engineering excellence withoutaesthetic compromise. Each model shares the samebeautiful form, undeniably modern yet with a direct lineageto some of the great Aston Martin models of the past, suchas the DB2, DB2/4 and DB4. As either a closed coupe withrakishly sleek lines, or a convertible of unmatched elegance, the V8 Vantage combines beauty with power and practicality.

62PERFORMANCEThe V8 Vantage offers superb all-roundperformance and, like all Aston Martins, delivers some impressive statistics: 0-100 km/h(62 mph) in 4.9 seconds and a potentialmaximum speed of 290 km/h (180 mph).Such figures do not tell the whole story, however, for the V8 Vantage represents theepitome of design and engineering excellence, most notably through the use of lightweightmaterials, excellent weight distribution, efficientaerodynamics and a truly remarkable engine.Aston Martin’s 4.7-litre V8 is hand-assembledat the company’s purpose-built engine facilityin Cologne, Germany. A light, compact, all-alloyunit, it provides high performance, yet isresponsive even at the lower end of the revrange. At 5000 rpm, the engine deliversmaximum torque of 470 Nm (346 lb ft),77 per cent of which is delivered at just1500 rpm – barely more than idle – makingthe cars extremely tractable and great fun todrive. Push harder, and the V8 revs freely, delivering refined, exhilarating pace.True to Aston Martin tradition, the V8 is asmusical as it is muscular, an engine thatentertains in every sense. The bore andstroke dimensions are optimised to provide anexcellent balance between outright power andtorque, while a resonance induction systemimproves tractability and performance, as wellas contributing to that inspired engine note.Variable inlet camshaft timing also providesimproved low-end throttle response andmid-range torque. The exhaust system is highly effective. Eachbank of cylinders features a four-into-two-intoonemanifold – an arrangement more usuallyfound on race cars – which improves breathingand therefore performance. Special bypassvalves allow a quieter exhaust note at lowspeeds; at higher speeds these open to reducethe pressure in the exhaust system, raising thepower output as well as generating a rousingaural accompaniment.Power and torque are not the only reasonsfor the V8 Vantage’s thunderous performance.Just as important is its lightweight, all-alloystructure, which gives the car class-leadingstrength and rigidity. The front mid-enginedlayout and rear mid-mounted transmissionhelp to provide the optimum front-to-rear weightdistribution, as well as creating a low centreof gravity. The result is agility, inspired balanceand perfect handling.

64DESIGNThe V8 Vantage is one of the world’s mostbeautiful cars: elegant, yet with a controlledaggression; perfectly proportioned, with alow, purposeful stance; modern, yetincorporating classic Aston Martin design cues.A stunning example of design purity, theV8 Vantage is, above all, instantly recognisableas an Aston Martin. The V8 Vantage Roadster builds upon theacclaimed design of the Coupe to create a highlydesirable convertible. The design team’s briefwas to give the V8 Vantage Roadster the lookof a well-toned athlete wearing a skin-tight suit,an identity that encapsulates the fusion ofcraftsmanship, technology, innovation anddesign excellence. The long, low bonnet line and two-seater cabinprovide the perfect balance between beautyand sporting intent. The V8 Vantage sits lowand close to the road, while the front and rearoverhangs have been purposely minimised. Theside profile forms a simple sweep, a curved linelike a bow under tension, while the rear haunchesare wide and muscular, like the flanks of apowerful animal. From the outset, Aston Martin’s engineers anddesigners focused on reducing size and weight,as well as optimising weight distribution, tomaximise agility. At just 4380 mm (172.5") long, not only is the V8 Vantage the smallest model inthe Aston Martin range, but it also benefits fromthe inherent agility that accompanies compactdesign and excellent weight distribution.Craft and technology play a crucial role.Hand-finished body panels ensure a perfect fit, while an all-alloy underbody structure – derivedfrom aerospace manufacturing – incorporatesbonded aluminium extrusions and castings forsuperb rigidity and minimal weight. The largeside panels are single, hand-finished, steelpressings, ensuring that the side and rearthree-quarter views are especially clean, with a minimum of unsightly shut lines.Aston Martin has ensured that the Roadsterpreserves the V8 Vantage Coupe’s light weight, allowing the convertible to exploit its compactsize, agility and power to the full. When closed, the fabric hood closely follows the outline of theCoupe, retaining that car’s dynamic and fluidprofile. When open, there is an unbroken, flowingline from front to rear, supremely elegant in itssimplicity. The hood, which stows neatly beneaththe aluminium rear tonneau cover, can bedeployed in just 18 seconds and at speedsof up to 50 km/h (30 mph). The V8 Vantage Roadster is Aston Martin’s14th convertible model since 1950, a directdescendant of iconic open-top models such asthe DB2, DB5, DB6 and DB7. It is a pure sportscar that heightens sensations and provides adriving experience that is synonymous withAston Martin, offering both high performanceand thrilling dynamics.Inside, traditional craftsmanship is combined with21st century technology. Hand-trimmed usingthe finest materials, the cabin places the driverat the heart of an authentic sports car. Thetwo-seater cabin offers generous space, not justfor driver and passenger, but for luggage too, making the V8 Vantage the perfect ally for aweekend away. The Coupe’s rear hatchbackopens to reveal a substantial 300-litre (10.6 cu ft)luggage area, offering up to three times morespace than some rivals, while the V8 VantageRoadster’s 144-litre (5.0 cu ft) luggage capacityis also class-leading. A large fuel tank means thatlong stretches between refuelling are easy.

66CONTROLThe V8 Vantage delivers superb, responsivehandling. Aston Martin’s unique all-alloy VH(Vertical Horizontal) architecture providesan excellent backbone, while the use oflightweight alloys, magnesium and advancedcomposites reduces body weight and createsclass-leading rigidity. The car’s natural agility is also aided by a lowpolar moment of inertia and excellent weightdistribution. Engineered to accommodate asmuch weight as possible within the wheelbase, the engine is positioned well behind the frontaxle line, just ahead of the cabin in a frontmid-engined layout. Dry sump lubricationenables the engine to sit much lower in thecar, significantly reducing the centre of gravityand preventing cornering G-forces fromrestricting oil supply to the engine. The transmission is rear mid-mountedforward of the rear axle line, improving weightdistribution still further. The transmissionis connected to the engine by a rigid, castaluminium torque tube, housing the immenselystrong and light carbon-fibre propeller shaft.A fast-shifting, six-speed manual gearbox isstandard, its ratios perfectly matched to theperformance of the V8 engine.Aston Martin’s acclaimed electro-hydraulicSportshift transmission is available as anoption. Offering precision gear shifts in around200 milliseconds, the paddle-operated gearboxbrings the sporting driver even closer to the car. When the paddles are not in use, Sportshiftincludes a user-selected ‘Auto Drive’ mode thatwill automatically select the right gear for theconditions. A ‘comfort’ setting allows for morerelaxed changes. The light, strong body structure of the V8 Vantageis combined with fully independent doublewishbone suspension, resulting in outstandinghandling and excellent ride quality. Thesuspension wishbones and dampers arealuminium, while the steering rack is solidlymounted forward of the front wheels – commonon race cars but rarely seen on road cars – forbetter control, and to provide the driver withgreater feedback and response. The optional Sports Pack consists of forged, lightweight, five-spoke alloy wheels, reviseddampers with an improved dynamic response, uprated springs and, for the Coupe, a revisedrear anti-roll bar. The Sports Pack optionprovides improved high-speed body control, greater agility and more precise driver feedback. The rigid body structure of the V8 Vantageensures maximum communication betweenroad and hand, relaying the car’s behaviourfaithfully and accurately, and providing anundiluted driving experience that is wellmannered and predictable at any speed. The V8 Vantage Roadster utilises the VHplatform’s inherent strength to deliver classleadinglevels of torsional rigidity. This strengthenables the body to form a highly stableplatform from which the suspension can controlthe car, ensuring a strong dynamic ‘feel’ for thedriver. As a result, the V8 Vantage Roadster isone of the most dynamically capable open-topcars on the road.

68ENGINEERINGThe V8 Vantage is inherently strong and agile. Itsall-alloy structure creates a tough passenger cell, and further protection is provided by deformablefront and rear crumple zones designed to absorbcrash energy. Excellent side impact protection isalso inbuilt, thanks to the large sills, strong roofpillars, door impact beams and the substantialdashboard and footwell structures. Both driverand passenger benefit from dual-stage airbags(deployed in one of two stages, depending onthe severity of the accident) and side airbags. The mid-mounted, aluminium-encased fuel cellis not only safe but also helps improve balanceand handling.A suite of electronic safety aids helps to keep theV8 Vantage away from accidents. In addition toABS and Traction Control, Dynamic StabilityControl (DSC) prevents wheel slippage or loss oftraction, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD)achieves optimal braking balance and EmergencyBrake Assist (EBA) automatically applies fullbraking power in an emergency situation. PositiveTorque Control (PTC) also acts to help prevent therear wheels from locking under engine braking.Front LED indicators and side lamps are joined byrear lamps employing 360 LEDs for lights, brakesand indicators, while optional xenon dipped beamheadlights are also available. The ultra-quickillumination of the LEDs provides crucial additionalreaction time for the car behind in the event of anemergency stop. In a potential roll-over situation, sensors in the V8 Vantage Roadster instantlydeploy two roll-hoops from the rear tonneau cover. The V8 Vantage underwent an extensive testingand development programme, during which 50prototypes were vigorously tested over more thanhalf a million miles. Over 12,000 miles of desertdriving, including maximum speed runs, werecarried out in Dubai, where the ambienttemperature regularly hit 48 degrees C and thebodywork of the cars reached 87 degrees C.Some 37,000 miles of high-speed testing wereconducted at the Nardo test track in Italy, as wellas on the Nürburgring Nordschleife in Germany, the world’s most daunting motor-racing circuit.Cold-weather endurance testing was undertakenin Sweden, in temperatures as low as minus30 degrees C.Monumental braking power is provided bysizeable disc brakes – 355 mm diameter atthe front, 330 mm at the rear – which are bothventilated and grooved.

70CRAFTSMANSHIPStarting an Aston Martin is a moment to savour.Sit behind the three-spoke steering wheel andset the multi-position, electrically adjustableseats. Feel the quality of the hand-stitchedleather rim and sense the intuitive layout of theprimary controls. The driver’s first interaction with the powerfulV8 engine is a blend of tradition and hightechnology, with a touch of theatre. The ignitionis controlled by a stainless steel and glassEmotion Control Unit (ECU), designed to be astactile and refined as a fine timepiece. The ECUis inserted into a special docking station setwithin the traditional clear glass starter button.Pressing the ECU fully into the starter buttonfires the engine. After pressing once again tostop the engine, the ECU rises slowly out of itsslot within the button so that it can be removed. The use of hand-crafted processes andfinishing not only means painstaking attentionto detail, inside and out, but also givesAston Martin’s designers freedom to producethe perfect form, avoiding the unsightlysolutions generated by the inflexibility of massproduction. Mass-produced cars frequentlyneed plastic finishers to hide awkwardproduction line joins, but such cosmeticmake-up is unnecessary at Aston Martin. For instance, the shut lines on the bonnet ofthe V8 Vantage run all the way to the front ofthe car without the need for a separate nosecone, creating a cleaner, crisper design.Hand-finished metal mesh grilles and trims areused instead of plastic alternatives, while thesingle aperture cuts for the headlamps in thefront wings of the V8 Vantage could not bematched by any machine. The instrument pack is carefully crafted fromaluminium and has a three-dimensional profilefor easy reading. To maintain a clear, simpledesign, the warning lights are hidden behindaluminium mesh faces, becoming visible onlywhen illuminated. The central message displaysuse Organic Electroluminescence (OEL) – aprocess pioneered by Aston Martin – makingthem easier to read than conventional LCDs.The V8 Vantage is hand-assembled and handfinished.Only craftsmen can deliver the designdetails and level of finish that Aston Martinengineers and designers demand, creating aquality that is simply not possible in high-volumemanufacture. Machines can stitch leather, forexample, but they cannot do it with the samedegree of care as experienced craftsmen. There is no rush with hand assembly; theover-riding concern is always quality. That iswhy all Aston Martins are built by hand, andit is why all the world’s finest luxury goods, from suits to watches, are still hand-made.When low volumes are desirable, and exclusivityis demanded, it is quite simply the only wayto achieve the best finish. Integrity is a keycornerstone of Aston Martin and we believethat everything has to be right.
