Jaime Cobb: Bringing Education
and Outreach into the Community
Westways | Spring 2012
Dear Friends,
Happy New Year and welcome to Westways!
This issue is dedicated to you—our friends
and neighbors who have given your precious
time and resources this year, to help north
Texans who suffer from dementia disorders,
and their families. We are truly blessed by
your generosity.
Our long-time friends will notice that
Westways has a new look. Our fresh look
comes at a time when we are taking a fresh
approach to mission and outreach. We know that the need for West
Center care in our community is great, and this issue highlights our
efforts to share our skills with a wider group of people than ever
before. As our nation’s resources shrink and the numbers of persons
with dementia grow, caregivers are looking to organizations like ours,
to provide support. This issue highlights two such programs:
Thanks to a generous grant from the Sid Richardson Foundation, we
are now offering Comprehensive Caregiver Training, an in-depth, handson
training series designed for family members caring for a loved one
at home. A second offering, “Taking Action on Alzheimer’s” is a singlesession
program designed to provide community groups a better
understanding of the disease. Gifts to this program will ensure that this
growing need in our community can be met for years to come.
Your gifts to the Senior Adult Day Program allow participants a full day
of fun and socialization, while their caregivers are given a welcome
break from the stresses of caregiving, at home. In this issue, you will
meet volunteer Lisa Wilson Waldron and her dog, Halle Berry. Lisa
received a national award this year, for her long-time dedication to the
elders who attend our day program. Some of you have been dedicated
to our day program for many years, too, and we give thanks for you.
We consider ourselves extremely fortunate to be in Fort Worth, where
warm and enthusiastic benefactors help so many local organizations
flourish. Together, we are creating world-class living in a very special
hometown, and each citizen owes a debt of gratitude to the behind-thescenes
groups that make it all possible. We highlight just a few of our
community partners in our publication this year.
Our work is never complete so we are thankful beyond measure that
you have chosen to be a part of our family. Whether you are a first-time
donor or a long-time supporter, I can assure you that your gifts are
prudently used and greatly appreciated.
Best Wishes for a Healthy and Happy 2012!
In Memoriam
It started as a labor of love…for
one month. Twenty five years
later, it is a lasting love affair.
Nearly every Monday, Lisa Wilson Waldron and Halle
Berry arrive at the James L. West Center to entertain
and engage the clients of the Senior Adult Day
Program. A 20-minute show, some Bible study, some
singing and lots of discussions.
Well, not “The” Halle Berry. This Halle is a long-haired
dachshund and she is a born trickster. Before Halle,
there were Gretchen and Hannah, both dachshunds,
two parrots and a cockatoo. All have been taught by
Lisa. “I read books on how to do it. They do a lot of
tricks -- roll over, play dead, jump through a hoop,
open and shut doors, take a bow.”
Lisa, took a bow of her own last year when she was
recognized with the National Adult Day Services
Association’s Volunteer Award at the association’s
annual conference.
“That was a surprise. All this stuff kind of just
happened,” she says. “I got started because the church
needed someone when the Adult Day Program opened
in the First Presbyterian Church gym. They asked me if I
could come by, bring my dog and entertain.
I never stopped coming.”
Starring
Halle Berry
Lisa Waldron A Dogged Volunteer
Halle performs at homeless shelters, elementary
schools and at the prison in Gatesville, Texas, all places
where Lisa volunteers. It was at Gatesville where one of
the prisoners tagged Halle with her name.
Lisa’s last professional venture was in real estate. She
accumulated and sold 21 properties, which enables
her to spend much of her time volunteering. “God has
been so good to me.”
At the James L. West Center, Lisa says she continually
is overjoyed by how much the Adult Day Program
clients want to talk. And talk. “They interact well,”
she says. “They have so much knowledge and history.
Once I get there, I’m so happy; it’s a magical place.
Every time I leave, I hate
it. I’m thinking about how
lucky I am to know them;
they have so much to give to
other people. Mostly love.
Meet
Jaime Cobb:
Bringing education
& outreach into the
community
Jaime Cobb needed to find
work after she had moved
to California. Though her
degree was in public relations
and marketing from Abilene
Christian University, she took
a job working with adults stricken by
Alzheimer’s at a day care center.
Years later, back in Texas working as the tour
manager for Stockyards Station, Jaime could not let
go of her yearning to help people. “I had loved the
work in California,” she said. “So I applied to work
at James L. West even though there was no opening.
Then this grant became available, I got a call and I
knew it was where I wanted to be.”
This grant is a gift from the Sid W. Richardson
Foundation to develop caregiver and community
educational programs. The programs go outside
the James L. West Alzheimer Center to assist and
educate caregivers and the community. Jaime
was hired as the Director of Community Education
September 1 and she explains two important facets
of the programs:
Comprehensive Caregiver Training is an in-depth, multiseries
training for caregivers. The program’s main
focus: “We want to reach caregivers where they are,”
Jaime said. “Our goal is to keep loved ones at home as
long as possible. We know it can be exhausting caring
for a loved one so we will offer hands-on education,
a reference binder and be available for their phone
calls.” The program will perform outreach talks and
seminars at workplaces, in senior centers, churches
and synagogues, and more. It will cover areas such
as helping with feeding and dressing, understanding
changed behavior, communications, home safety, how
to find proper equipment and caregiver burnout.
“Burnout is a huge problem,” she said. “More often
than not, caregivers get sick because they aren’t
taking care of themselves. They have unbelievably
high stress levels, a higher rate of health issues and
their socialization skills decline. We want them to
know the signs and symptoms of burnout and where
to go and how to ask for help.”
Taking Action on Alzheimer’s is designed to provide the
community at large a better understanding of the disease,
how it affects all those touched by the disease and how to
provide support. This outreach will be directed toward any
group such as elder care attorneys, religious leaders and
civic groups, among others. The goal, according to Jaime,
is to reach those that have a tangential relationship with
families affected by Alzheimer’s.
Jaime is available to speak to interested groups,
employers and clubs about the multi-series
Comprehensive Caregiver Training or the Taking Action
on Alzheimer’s presentation. She can be reached at
(817) 877-1199 x 199 or jcobb@jameslwest.org.
The Sid W. Richardson Foundation provides grants to
nonprofit organizations in Texas to help them fulfill
their missions. Grants are made primarily in education,
healthcare, human services and the arts.
From left, J.T. Aughinbaugh, Chairman of the Board of the James L.
West Center, Pete Geren, President of the Sid Richardson Foundation,
Susan Farris, Executive Director of the James L. West Center and former
Fort Worth Mayor Bob Bolen.
The Man Behind
the Foundation
Oil, cattle, and land formed the
basis of Sid W. Richardson’s
life’s work. His fortune
paralleled the boom and
bust nature of the petroleum
industry in its early years.
In 1947, he established the Sid W.
Richardson Foundation, providing in
the foundation’s charter that all grants
be awarded to recipients within the
state of Texas.
Mr. Richardson attended Baylor
University and Simmons College (now
Hardin-Simmons) from 1910-1912.
Later, with borrowed money and with
his friend and partner, Clint Murchison,
he hit oil and amassed a million dollars
in 1919 and 1920. In 1933, with a small
investment and a friend with drilling
know-how, he turned his oil business into
a booming enterprise. His hard work,
perseverance and ability to get along
with people of all walks of life turned
almost every venture into a success.
He served as chairman of Sid
Richardson Gasoline Co. in Kermit,
Sid Richardson Carbon Company in
Odessa, and Sid W. Richardson, Inc.,
in Fort Worth. He was a partner in
Richardson and Bass, Oil Producers, in
Fort Worth.
An admirer of the paintings and
sculptures of Frederic Remington and
Charles M. Russell, he built one of the
largest private collections of these
two great artists, starting with the
purchase of his first Russell painting
in 1942. He thought they captured,
better than any other artists, the
vitality, the color and the motion he
had always associated with the West.
Today, Pete Geren is the President of
the foundation, which provides grants
to nonprofit organizations primarily in
education, healthcare, human services
and the arts.
Thanks to
the Scott
Foundation,
there’s no
place like
home
William Edrington Scott, known to
friends as Billy, was a Fort Worth
native who never married; his true
loves and passions were the visual and
performing arts. Scott’s successes
and those of his family, in banking, real
estate and insurance, enabled him to
start the William E. Scott Foundation in
1960, three years before his death.
The foundation was chartered to support non-profits
with a focus on the arts in Fort Worth or Tarrant
County. The Scott Theater in the Cultural District was
built by the foundation. Much of the Scott estate’s
artwork belongs to The Modern Art Museum. The list
of contributions is long.
A late-1980s gas find on some of his ranching
properties in south Texas and the market boom of the
’90s enabled the foundation to maintain its directed
giving to the arts and expand support into healthcare,
education and social nonprofit services.
Today, Raymond (Rob) Kelly, an attorney/shareholder
with the Decker Jones law firm, is President of the
foundation. He joined the board in 1979 as trustee/
director. The Scott Foundation has made two gifts
totaling $400,000 to the James L. West Center, the
first for the construction of the West Center, which
was completed in 1993, and the second for planned
reconstruction.
“The West Center was something really needed in Fort
Worth. The foundation got involved because there was
nothing like it at the time,” Kelly said. “Personally,
It’s not just going to be painting
and new furniture. It’s a change in
living atmosphere that will be more
environmentally pleasurable for
the patient and the visiting family.
I was interested because my mother suffered with
dementia for years before passing away.
“We are particularly interested in the planned
reconstruction. The focus on best care of Alzheimer’s
and dementia has changed and you must offer care
and care facilities that are different now than 20
years ago.
“When I toured the Center a couple of months ago,
I was particularly interested in the planned upgrade
and the changes in the living formats. It’s not just
going to be painting and new furniture. It’s a change
in living atmosphere that will be more environmentally
pleasurable for the patient and the visiting family. I
was particularly struck that you can avoid the feeling
of being in institutional care and closer to what a
home environment might be.”
Because of the Scott Foundation’s size and
philosophy, it tends to support capital projects
more than operating programs. Kelly said that if an
operating request is received, the foundation tends to
look at one-time grants.
“It’s really not that easy to give money,” Kelly said.
“There are far more worthwhile requests than you
could possibly fund. We helped The West Center
originally, so it was natural to help again.”
“Mr. Kelly understands that the West Center has
an individualized care system designed around the
resident’s initial evaluation and life experiences and
not based on what is economically practical for the
nursing facility,” said Duncan Manning, vice president
of development for the West Center. “He understands
what it is like to be a caregiver and the importance
of having facilities such as the West Center for
those individuals that do not have a family caregiver
support system or for individuals for whom the
disease has become too challenging for them to be
able to remain in their homes.”
The Board, staff and families of the James L. West Center
would like to thank Kendra Belfi, M.D., for 18 years of
cheerful and dedicated service to the Center’s residents,
and for her tireless dedication to our nation’s elders
throughout her career. Happy retirement, Dr. Belfi!
Senior Adult Day Program
Every day ...
… with love
Helen and Cloyd James (C.J.) Dowling were
married more than 59 years. He worked as an
aeronautical engineer for General Dynamics
and Lockheed 38-plus years after four years
in the Air Force. She worked at raising a
family that now includes four children, nine
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Theirs was a life of love.
Before she passed, Helen was afflicted with
Alzheimer’s, a slow, debilitating disease. C.J. had
retired by then and took on most, if not all, of the
household and caregiver responsibilities. C.J. lovingly
assisted Helen, but the disease persisted to the point
that “Dr. (Kendra) Belfi recommended I look into the
West Center’s Senior Adult Day Program. She said
it would give me time as caregiver to do errands,
housekeeping and time for myself,” C.J. said.
“It was a difficult transition; Helen did not want to be
there at all. But with the patience and incredible skill
and caring from people like Irma Jones and her staff,
Helen became more comfortable, then very attached.
She looked forward to seeing the staff.
“They became an extended part of our family. I’d say,
‘Let’s go see Irma’ and Helen was ready to roll.”
C.J. said Helen was involved in many activities—
music, arts and crafts, games—and the variety of
daily stimulation was much better for her than being
at home.
“I learned much about caring from Irma and the
staff,” C.J. said. “The staff is incredibly graceful
and gifted in interacting and caring with people with
dementia-like problems. Those are precious, herotype
people.”
There is a plaque on the door leading into the area
for the Senior Adult Day Program that recognizes
Lockheed for its contributions. “It means a lot to
me,” C.J. said, “that I worked there and that the
community helps take care of our loved ones.”
Helen and C.J. Dowling
Financial aid budgeted for the
current fiscal year is $346,238. It
is provided to qualified Senior Adult
Day Program (SADP) participants as
well as to full-time residents. Adult
Day participants also may qualify for
assistance from agencies such as
the Alzheimer’s Association or the
Area Agency on Aging.
According to Chief Financial Officer
Kathy Schroeder, all participants
in the day program receive some
financial aid as the rates charged
are lower than actual costs; the day
program is subsidized by the Center
and the Center’s Foundation.
During the last five years, the
amount needed for aid has
increased 100%. Funds for financial
aid are provided by the James L.
West Presbyterian Special Care
Center Foundation. These funds
are available because of generous
donations from the public. Donors
may designate a gift to be used for
financial aid by specifying their gift
go to the Rabbi Robert and Rolly
Donor Spotlight:
The Thomas M., Helen McKee &
John P. Ryan Foundation, Inc.
The Ryan Foundation was founded by
Helen McKee Ryan and her son, John
P. Ryan, in 1983. Helen Ryan was the
widow of Thomas M. Ryan, a prominent
businessman in Fort Worth. The Ryan
family owned several businesses,
including Waples Platter Company,
Ranch Style, Inc., White Swan Foods,
Ryan Mortgage Company and First
Life Insurance Company. John P. Ryan
served as President and CEO for most
of these companies.
The Foundation received its initial
funding from the Estate of Helen Ryan
upon her death in 1983. The Foundation
received additional funding from John
Ryan during his lifetime and from his
Estate upon his death in 2003. The name
of the Foundation was changed to The
Thomas M., Helen McKee & John P. Ryan
Foundation, Inc. to adequately reflect the
names of the significant donors.
The mission of the Foundation is to
support a wide variety of public charities
with an emphasis on Tarrant County
and Fort Worth. Areas of interest include
health care, human and social services,
education, children services and the arts.
“The Ryan Foundation was among
the first contributors and has been a
consistent, very generous partner,” said
J.T. Aughinbaugh, chairman of the board
of the James L. West Center. “We’re very
appreciative of its long-time commitment.”
