engageYour <strong>Community</strong>, Your Plan<strong>July</strong> <strong>2011</strong>LOCAL COMMUNITY PLANNING DIVISIONThe Courier, Dundee, Copyright DC Thomson & Co Ltd.Councillor Jim Millar, Convener of Neighbourhood Services is joined by community representatives to launch the plans.Plans for Your <strong>Community</strong>The 24th June was an exciting landmark for the Local <strong>Community</strong><strong>Planning</strong> Division as it saw the launch of new local communityplans for each of the multi member ward areas in <strong>Angus</strong>.The Scottish Government defines <strong>Community</strong> <strong>Planning</strong> as‘…a process which helps public agencies work together with thecommunity to plan and deliver better services which make a realdifference to people’s lives’.The plans were developed in consultation with local communities,<strong>Angus</strong> Council and its community planning partners. They bringtogether a profile for each of the areas, an action plan detailingwhat is happing over the coming months as well as improvementslocal communities would like to see in their area.Launching the plans at The Canmore Room in Forfar, CouncillorJim Millar, Convener of Neighbourhood Services said:“I am delighted to launch the local community plans, whichrepresent much hard work on behalf of the partners, inconsultation with the communities. Arbroath West & Lethamand Arbroath East & LunanYear of the Light <strong>2011</strong>Brechin & Edzell andMontrose & DistrictBrechin Fairtrade Steering GroupFairtrade is about getting a fairer deal for producers in theworld’s poorest countries.<strong>2011</strong> is Year of the Light - celebrating one of the world'sgreatest feats of engineering, the Bell Rock Lighthouse.A year long calendar of events is being held in Arbroath tocommemorate the bicentenary of one of the Seven Wondersof the Industrial World. The Local <strong>Community</strong> <strong>Planning</strong> Teamhas supported community groups to mark the occasion.Please visit Year of the Light webpagewww.angusahead.com/bellrocklighthouseArbroath Town CentreRegeneration GroupThe High Street is at the heart of any town and an excitingredevelopment is underway to transform Arbroath High Streetinto a more attractive, vibrant and visitor friendly space.The Local <strong>Community</strong> <strong>Planning</strong> Team has supported theBrechin Fairtrade Steering Group.The Steering Group have demonstrated enough localcommitment to justify being called a Fairtrade City in time forFairtrade Fortnight <strong>2011</strong>. This has involved publicising issuesthrough events, leaflets, businesses, churches and schools,thereby allowing local businesses and the community to buildon the reputational benefits of Fairtrade.Montrose Adopt a StationRailway stations are often perceived to be dour and drabaffairs. Not the case in Montrose.The Local <strong>Community</strong> <strong>Planning</strong> Team are supporting a groupof Montrose residents, on a project as part of Scotrail’s‘Adopt a Station’ Scheme.‘Adopt a Station’ is a programme that allows communities toimprove this important gateway to their town, reflecting localideas and innovation. In Montrose the focus will be on enhancingthe general environment and appearance of the station.The Local <strong>Community</strong> <strong>Planning</strong> Team, Arbroath and AreaPartnership and local elected members are working hard todeliver an innovative package of redevelopment to attract morevisitors, help existing traders to flourish, encourage newbusiness to the area and invigorate the town centre for thebenefit of the local community.


Carnoustie & Districtand Monifieth & SidlawMonifieth <strong>Community</strong>Centre Steering GroupThe Monifieth <strong>Community</strong> Centre Steering Group recentlybecame the proud tenants of new premises to kick start theirdream of opening a community centre in the area.Kirriemuir & Deanand Forfar & DistrictViewmount Voices, ForfarThe facility is open to the public to hold classes, groups,meetings or any kind of event, for more information contactthe Local <strong>Community</strong> <strong>Planning</strong> Team.This is just a taster for the group who plan to put in a bid tothe Big Lottery to build a new community facility.Carnoustie EconomicDevelopment & TourismCarnoustie Golf Links is one of the jewels in the <strong>Angus</strong> crown.Local people are working together to modernise the High Streetso that the Carnoustie brand retains its global reputation.Viewmount residents are taking action to improve their area.Through the support of the Local <strong>Community</strong> <strong>Planning</strong> Teamthey have formed Viewmount Voices. This follows a<strong>Community</strong> Appraisal, involving residents and a number ofpublic services, which has identified priorities for Viewmount;lllenvironmental enhancements;improvements to the housing stock;tackling issues of crime and anti-social behaviour.Davidson Park, KirriemuirConcerned with the condition of the play equipment in theirlocal park, residents in Southmuir, Kirriemuir formed theDavidson Park Action Group (DPAG) to work towardsimprovements.DPAG are supported by the Local <strong>Community</strong> <strong>Planning</strong> Team,and other <strong>Angus</strong> Council services and will be seeking furthersupport from other local groups and businesses.<strong>Angus</strong> Council will contribute part of the funding, with theremainder being sought from external sources.Local community groups are being supported by the Local<strong>Community</strong> <strong>Planning</strong> Team to develop a plan to improveCarnoustie town centre for businesses and tourism.This work is at an early stage and wider community input willbe sought and is central to this development.
