Bosch Case Study“The reason we need such highperformance is that we need toanticipate that an operator may addHD cameras to the device. The goal isto support four HD cameras withoutlosing framesand provide fluid video in allideo windows.”Konrad SimonProduct ManagerBosch Security SystemsAdvantages ofIntel ® Architecture• Decoding Performance todisplay high definition andstandard definition video fromcameras and encoders usingH.264 or MPEG-4 encoding atup to 30 images per second• Compatibility with WindowsbasedBosch decoder softwaresuite and ease of futuresoftware updates• Fast development frominception to finished productin 7 months• Intel ® processor road mapenables Bosch to target evenhigher levels of decoderperformanceThe decoder is part of a total management system created by Bosch thatenables remote control without direct user interaction. “Video managementsoftware running on the decoder ensures that each video stream gets sufficientperformance to maintain smooth as possible video performance on eachwindow of the display,” says Simon.“A prerequisite was that we wanted to use our existing PC-based video softwarefor decoding and rendering, in addition to software that provides connectioncontrol and distribution of video over selected screen layouts.”The two software components include Bosch VideoSDK 5* software, capable ofhandling simultaneous rendering and decoding of up to 256 video streams, inaddition to Bosch Monitor Wall* software to provide connection control anddistribution of video over selected screen layouts.”“The reason we need such high performance is that we need to anticipate thatan operator may add HD cameras to the device. The goal is to support four HDcameras without losing frames and provide fluid video in all video windows,“says Simon.Video Decoding Workload Analysis ToolBosch collaborated on the design project with Adtech Global. To evaluateprocessor solutions, Adtech Global used the Video Decoding Workload AnalysisTool, a benchmarking software tool co-developed by Bosch and Adtech Global. This tool is used at Adtech Global to evaluate processor performance, measuredecoder performance and tune the decoder system to meet customer requirements. The PC-based test system provides high performance video streams to stressthe system under extreme workload scenarios, such as fast-switching videos thatchallenge a decoder. The tool represents a realistic workload, including decodingand CPU-based decryption algorithms in addition to processing incomingEthernet traffic on a GbE controller.Performance AnalysisAdtech Global conducted a trial that compared multiple CPU options, ultimatelyleading to the selection of a platform based on the 2nd generation Intel corei3 processor. Table 1 summarizes the results of the workload analysis.Encoding Streams Resolution Max. bit rate/streamH.264 HD 2 1080p/30 10 MbpsH.264 HD 4 720p/30 10 MbpsH.264 HD 6 4CIF/480p 6 MbpsH.264 HD 12 4CIF/480p 2.5 MbpsTable 1.
