Lester a petition.“The department chairs came to me and asked me in writing toappoint Gerald Pepe as the permanent dean,” Lester recalls.This was the spring of 2005, a time when the school, founded toimprove health care in Hampton Roads, was confronting its ownchallenges related to financing and accreditation.“I said, ‘Hallelujah! I’ll do it today,’” Lester recalls. “The facultygave me advice that made me look good.”With that appointment, “interim” was removed from Pepe’s titleas dean, and he also became the provost — free to exert leadership onmatters of curriculum, faculty staffing and student admissions. Andthe school was set solidly on course to follow the vision of a facultyveteran who draws on his passion for the medical school and hisexperiences as a highly respected researcher.WWW.EVMS.EDU WINTER 200925
