However, it should also be noted that a significantnumber of people with <strong>mental</strong> illness who live alone, still have the daily involvementof ageing parent carers while not living with them.5.2. Population Characteristics – Number of CarersAustralian Bureau of Statistics data and analysis of the 2006 Census ofPopulation and HousingThe 2006 Census collected data on the numbers and characteristics of people whowere providing unpaid care, help or assistance to family or others because thatperson had disability, long term illness or problems relating to old age, in the twoweek period prior to Census day (August 2006). This data can be segmented bycarer age, thus giving an indication of the number of carers in the target age groupsfor the MHRP. It needs to be remembered that this is broad data only, which doesnot either:differentiate the type of disability of the person being assisted; norindicate the length of time a carer has been helping.Tables 7, 8 and 9 below give details of the numbers of carers who are aged 5564,65 or over, and in the case of Indigenous carers, 45 years of age and over for therelevant statistical divisions in the Northern Sydney region. Amongst the generalpopulation, there are more carers aged 5564 than aged 65 and over (16,385compared to 12,651). However, the male/female split is similar between both groups,with, as expected more females than males in a caring role (63% and 58%respectively). Amongst the Indigenous group there is an even higher incidence offemale carers 68%, but it must be borne in mind that the overall numbers in thisgroup are very small at 69.
