Obituary - Delia Doyle (Merici College’s first Head Girl 1959)It is with sadness that we write about the passing of Merici College’s first Head Girl(School Captain), Delia Duke (nee Doyle) on 26 July,2013. Delia was born inGoulburn on 7 July, 1941 and had 2 sisters and a brother and she was Captainin 1959.The family moved to Canberra and they lived in Turner. Delia initially attendedSt Christopher’s school at Manuka and then Merici College (then known asCatholic Girls High). She loved to play basketball and tennis.In 2009, Merici College celebrated its Jubilee and Delia was thrilled to be asked tojoin in the celebrations, including giving a speech in one of the assemblies.Delia worked in the Department of Defence, where she met her husband who was in the Navy. Shewent on to study nursing and became a midwife. She worked at the Canberra Hospital for 6 years.She married and had 4 sons and the family settled in Chifley and Torrens. Delia’s sons attended MaristCollege and Delia was the President of the Mothers Committee for some years.Delia was a passionate voice and advocate for families with children with a disability. At Delia’sfuneral service one of the Prayers of the Faithful read ‘thank you for enabling Delia to work with driveand determination to develop faith community and establish support services for people with adisability here in Canberra.’Delia went on the study a Bachelor Degree in Fine Arts – in History at the ANU.She spent her retirement years living on the south coast. She had 7 grandchildren and 1 greatgrandson. She loved her Irish heritage, gardening, art galleries, meditation in the Benedictinetradition, her family and friends. She had an outgoing personality and she actively kept in contact witha wide circle of friends.She battled breast cancer over a number of years and she died in the Hospice in Canberra attended bythe sisters from the Little Company of Mary.The College was represented at Delia’s funeral by College Captain Elyse Dahl and Ningil CaptainHannah Solly.Lisa Melis and Gerard RyanFollow us on@MericiiC , @MericiSport, @MericiCanberra.
