Letter From the Executive DirectorA time for thanks – as we move rapidly into the Holiday Season, it isonly appropriate that I take the time to thank all of you, Cheyenne AnimalShelter supporters, for the extreme kindness and generosity you show theorphaned animals here in southeastern Wyoming.Over the nearly four years that I havebeen in Cheyenne I have personally observedtime and time again the generosity that thiscommunity has for its fellow citizens, both twoleggedand four-legged. I cannot possibly mentionall of the individuals and businesses thathave donated their time and/or money to theshelter in the limited space I have here. Still,I could not resist bragging about a few recentones (others will be mentioned as always inthis newsletter). You may have seen in the local mediaover the last month or so that the Shelter hasbeen blessed with several different types of donations. Thanks to somevery generous people taking a few seconds each day to vote online for theCheyenne Animal Shelter, the C.A.S. has won three straight statewide competitionstotaling $3,000.00 to be used to care for our orphaned animals. This competition is international in scope and titled the Shelter Challenge;if you would like to join in on the voting just go to http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com/clickToGive/shelterchallenge.faces?siteId=3and follow thedirections. You can also email me at rick@cheyenneanimalshelter.org and Iwill put you on my email reminder list. This competition is sponsored by theAnimal Rescue Site and Petfinder and runs quarterly throughout the year. The Shelter was also fortunate to again be selected to receive the proceeds($300.00) from Alpine Dental’s “Candy to Military, Money to Shelter Drive”.Thank you to Dr. Gallagher and her employees for their on-going generosity. What is so exciting about all of the above mentioned gifts is that theycome from such diverse sources!Whether it be a child who is having a birthday party and asking theinvitees to give presents to the animals at the shelter in lieu of gifts to himor her, or a person picking up an injured kitten on the side of the road andbringing that kitten to the shelter – it just shows how very concerned theresidents of Laramie County are about their community and the animalsthat share it with them.I know I speak from all of us here at the shelter, including the thousandsof needy animals that pass through our doors each year, when I saythank you…Have a happy and safe holiday season.Rick CollordBoard of DirectorsJerry EggePresidentMax MaxfieldVice PresidentHeather FrauendienstTreasurerLynn BoakAssistant TreasurerJanet MarschnerSecretaryWard AndersonBrad CaveMichele HankinsHolly HansonChloe IllowayPhil KinerKathy MajerusBo ShortDusty TheinDeb WalkerShelter ManagementRick CollordExecutive DirectorRob ShankShelter ManagerBaylie EvansCommunity RelationsTori MenardBookkeeperStarr MezaHuman ResourcesBrock C. If you remember “Fat Sam,” hewas a senior Border Collie mix, severely overweight and sufferingfrom advanced hip disease. He was brought to the Park CountyAnimal Shelter in Cody as a part of the transfer of animals to relievethe pressure that seizure placed on your shelter. During 3 monthsin our shelter, in spite of lots of care and attention, his conditionsteadily deteriorated and he became totally immobile due to theextreme pain and arthritis. To try and get him moving again, I becamehis foster mom and began working on improving his mobility. Our middle school student council took on Sam as their first serviceproject of the school year in 2010 and raised money for the first oftwo hip surgeries (femoral head ostectomy), which took place inSeptember and December respectively. He went from 80 pounds toa healthy and lean 50 pounds, and the surgeries were very successful. After months of nursing him through recovery and dailyphysical therapy, he and I had bonded so strongly that it was clearthat this was his forever home, and I adopted him this spring. Henow runs, plays, jumps on the sofa, and is a completely differentdog with a new lease on life.I have attached some photos of Sam through the last year and ahalf: one showing him on his first night in foster care after havinga shave down due to the terrible condition of his coat (it is shiny, beautiful, and soft now!), one of him and his little chiweinnie friendon his first night home after his first surgery, a couple taken duringthe of months following his first surgery running (yes, running!)around on the ranch and in the fall leaves, his hip x ray showing thecondition of his hips prior to surgery, and one of him just this summeron a hike in the mountains.I volunteer for our shelter, and I know how frustrating and dishearteningit can get sometimes. So often we only hear the bad, the sad,and the negative. Know that for Sam, as for so many others younever hear about after they leave you, you have made a huge differencein his life. (By the way, his name is now just plain “Sam” ashe is a svelte, muscular boy!)Keep up the good work!Sincerely,Mary KefferCody, Wyoming

Holiday and ColdWeather Tips for PetsThe Winter Season often brings lotsof activity and excitement, and thereare some things to remember to helpkeep your pets safe this season. It’s best to keep your pet’s diet assimilar as possible throughout theholidays. It can be tempting to give yourpets a holiday feast like your own, butdisrupting their diet can cause stomachupset or even injury. For example, turkey bones are brittle and sharp andshouldn’t be given to dogs to chew on.Desserts like chocolate can be especiallydangerous for dogs.Dogs and cats aren’t always as socialas we think. Sometimes a lot ofnew faces, like those at a party, can bestressful to pets. Consider giving petstheir own, quiet room during get-togethers.This will also keep them safe fromguests feeding them table scraps andfrom escaping through the front door aspeople come and go.Many holiday decorations look likegreat toys, especially to cats. Tinsel,if eaten, can wreck havoc on a cat’sinsides, sometimes requiring surgeryto remove. Christmas trees can fall andinjure curious cats and dogs. Flickeringcandles look like fun toys to some cats.Remember that just because your pethas a fur coat, they are not immuneto the cold weather. The best place forpets is indoors with their owners. If theymust stay outside, ensure they haveadequate shelter from the weather andplenty of food and fresh water. In the News ...Rabies is still hereThe threat of rabies still existsin Laramie County. Beginning lastJanuary, the area has reported severalcases of the disease. It’s the firsttime since before 1984 that LaramieCounty has seen rabies among its wildanimals. So far, the disease has onlybeen discovered in skunks and bats, but it is highly contagious and couldeasily spread to other wild animals, livestock and pets.Rabies is transmitted throughsaliva and mucus. Any contact with arabid animal’s saliva in an open woundor cut or through being bitten cantransmit the disease. It is extremelydeadly to humans and other animals.Animals already vaccinated are saferfrom the disease. It is extremely important thatresidents remain diligent about vaccinatingpets and livestock and keep aneye out for any animals acting sick.Rabid animals can appear disoriented, confused, scared or aggressive.Anyone that comes into contactwith any animal that is behavingstrangely or appears sick should notapproach it and should call CheyenneAnimal Control at 635-1453 immediately.Cheyenne Animal Control officersare patroling neighborhoods, informingresidents about the rabies riskand writing tickets for non-compliancewith the law requiring rabies vaccinations.Cheyenne Animal Shelter Volunteer ProgramDo you have the time, heart and passion for animals? Our volunteer program may be for you!For more information, call us at: 307-632-6655Page 9
