Bericht des Präsidenten
Den Namen Anton, Anton, Anton hörte man immer
wieder in unseren Klub in Erwartung auf die
Veranstaltung mit Anton im Schwabeklub.
Am 2. April veranstaltete er mit Edith Prock, Rudi
Ecker und den Fichtler Buam eine Show, die uns lange
in Erinnerung bleiben wird.
Wir hatten ein volles Haus und es war ein wirklich
schöner Abend. Anton und die ganze Gruppe haben
unsere Erwartungen übertroffen, einfach super!
Das Trachtenfest 2009 wurde am 18. April im Rhine
Donau Club in Leamington abgehalten und ich
möchte dem Präsidenten, Hans Leipold, und allen
seinen Mitarbeitern für die gute Zeit, die sie allen
Anwesenden bescherten, gratulieren.
Unser Klub war mit den Schwaben- und Donautänzern
gut vertreten. Deren Vorführungen waren großartig und
ich bedanke mich bei ihnen.
Enttäuscht war ich, sowie der Klub, dass nur zwei
unserer Mitglieder sich Zeit nahmen und mit den
Tanzgruppen im Bus mitgefahren sind.
Nächstes Jahr, wird das Trachtenfest 2010 hier in unserem
Klub in Kitchener veranstaltet und ich hoffe auf eine
positive Teilnahme der anderen Klubs. Wir brauchen
mehr Unterstützung von unseren Mitgliedern.
Zum Abschluss wünsche ich allen Müttern alles Liebe und
Gute zum Muttertag und freue mich schon darauf Sie alle
beim „Mother’s Day Luncheon“ begrüßen zu dürfen.

President’s Report
Anton, Anton, Anton, this is the name that was repeated
around our club in anticipation of the performer that
was coming to visit us at the Schwaben Club.
On April 2nd, he and Edith Prock, Rudi Ecker and the
Fichtler Buam, gave us a show that will long be remembered.
We had a full house and an absolutely wonderful evening.
Anton and the entire group lived up to our expectations
and more; simply super.

Trachtenfest 2009 was held in Leamington,
Rhine Donau Club, on April 18th and I congratulate
President, Hans Leipold, and his entire
staff for providing an enjoyable time for all who
attended.
Our Club was well represented by our Schwaben
and Donau Dancers and they were great in their
performances, I thank them all.
A disappointment for me and also to our Club,
was that only two members gave of their time
and came on the bus with our dance groups.
Next year, 2010 Trachtenfest, will be held in our
Club here in Kitchener and I hope other clubs
will look at us more favorably; we need more effort
from our members.
In closing, I wish all Mothers a very Happy and
Pleasant Mother’s Day and I look forward to
greeting you all at our Mother’s Day Luncheon.

We are now nicely into Spring and waiting for
Summer – and guess what? “OKTOBERFEST”
tickets are now on sale.
This will be an exciting Oktoberfest this year, as
we look forward to seeing, again, the fabulous
“Golden Keys” and WELCOME the exciting
news that in the Schwaben Hall we will feature
all the way from Germany, the “SCHWABEN 6”.
Get you tickets early and be sure you get to enjoy
our two bands at Oktoberfest 2009.

Strategische Planung
Am 23. April fand in unserem Klub unser erstes
Treffen hinsichtlich einer strategischen
Planung statt. In der zweistündigen Sitzung
wurde ausführliche Information weitergegeben
und zum Abschluss fand eine offene Diskussion
statt. Das nächste Treffen ist für den 21. Mai
von 18:30 Uhr bis 20:30 Uhr vorgesehen. Zur
1. Warum besteht der Schwabenklub?
2. Sind unsere Räumlichkeiten ausreichend genutzt?
Wie groß sollten wir sein und warum?
3. Wie können wir weitere Mitglieder, jüngere und ältere
Mitglieder, für den Klub gewinnen?
4. Wie können wir mehr freiwillige Helfer (Volunteers)
dazu bringen, im Klub auszuhelfen?
5. Wie würden Sie den Klub in 1 bis 5 Jahre gerne sehen,
und wie in 5 bis 10 Jahren?
6. Wie bewahren wir unsere Werte, kulturelle Identität,
unser Kulturerbe and wie geben wir dies alles weiter?
7. Was denken Sie, sind die Probleme, die auf den
Schwabenklub zukommen?
8. Ist die Bedienungsqualität im Klub zufriedenstellend?
Was können wir besser machen?
9. Wie sind Sie bereit dem Klub auszuhelfen?
10. Welche Geschäftsmöglichkeiten sind vorhanden?
11. Sind wir, oder sollten wir, zu Zusammenarbeit

Strategic Planning Update
We had our first Strategic Panning Session
Meeting on April 23rd, 2009 in the Club. The
two hour meeting was full of information and
a great open discussion period to close off the
meeting. We are planning the next Strategic
Planning Session meeting for May 21st from
1. What is the Schwaben Club’s purpose
for existing?
2. Are we the correct size of facility for our needs?
How big do we need to be and why?
3. How can we get more members both young and
old attracted to the Club?
4. How do we get more volunteers and people involved
in donating time to the Club?
5. What would you like to see the Club look like in
1 to 5 years, and 5 to 10 years
6. How do we maintain our values, cultural identity,
and heritage and pass them on?
7. What do you think are the issues facing The
Schwaben Club?
8. Is the level of service satisfactory at our Club?
What can we do better?
9. What are you willing to do to help the Club?
10. What business opportunities are available?
11. Are or should we be looking at collaboration
scenarios? Note we are not talking amalgemation
but to share location.

Fleeing from a brutal Soviet Red Army
onslaught, the Wilhelm Gustloff is ready
to leave port jammed with over 10,000
German refugees, naval personnel and
wounded soldiers. The vessel is designed
to hold a maximum of 1,880 passengers
and crew. Of the refugees, a staggering
four thousand are infants, children
and youths on their way to promising
safety in the West. Minus 18° Celsius (0°
Fahrenheit) weather grips the Oxhöft
Pier in Gotenhafen (Gdynia) on Tuesday
the 30th day of January 1945.
For the first time in four years, the former
flagship of Nazi pleasure cruising has
started its engines. It‛s setting course
for Kiel on mainland Germany - far away
from the continued disintegration of the
Eastern Front.

Spring Clean-Up
It was a lovely Saturday morning, perfect for
cleaning up the Club and surrounding property.
Luckily, a dozen people shared that idea.
I would like to personally thank the 11 people
that came out on the morning of April 25th to
help clean up the Club property, and work on
the windows of the Club itself. And although a
valiant effort was put forward to attack the graffiti
on the wall, there wasn’t any serious progress
made until VP George tackled it the next
morning. And it’s really looking better now!
So thank you once again to everyone that came
out to help. I hope the sausage and sauerkraut
schmeckt. And I hope that more people will be
inclined to join us at the next clean-up.

The Schwaben Dancers
This month the Schwaben Dancers
went to Leimington on April 18th, for
Landestrachtenfest. We had a great time watching
all of the dance groups perform, and meeting
people from other clubs. We also enjoyed
seeing all of the different traditional tracht. It
was a great night, that was filled with fun.
On Sunday April 26th, the Schwaben Dancers
held a Social Fundraiser and Bake Sale at the
Schwaben Club. The Schwaben dancers and the
Kindergruppe performed for all of the guests.
Many people came out to support us, and it
was a wonderful afternoon of socializing and
Landestrachtenfest
eating some delicious baked goods. The Bake
Sale was a great success! Thank you to everyone
that came out to support the dancers and to everyone
that baked such wonderful treats for the
group and to everyone that donated raffle prizes.
The event raised over $1100 for the two dance
groups!! This is a great start for the Schwaben
Dancers to save for our trip to Ulm, Germany
next year.
We have a busy month of May ahead, with many
performances! The Schwaben Dancers are still
collecting Zehrs Tapes that can be dropped off in
the office. Thank you for your continued support.

Kindergruppe and
Jugendgruppe
April was another eventful month for our dancers.
We celebrated the beginning of April with
a Spring Party. There were lots of crafts and
snacks for everyone to enjoy.
Our group also participated in the Schwaben
Dancers Social held on April 26, 2009 from 2-
5pm at the Schwaben Club. Thank you to all
our parents for the donations of raffle prizes and
baked goods. It was a complete success and also
a great way to have our family and friends see
our group in action!Another big welcome to
more new dancers!
Our Kindergruppe is now up to 28 dancers!
Congratulations to those who had their first performance
this month. Fantastic dancing! Practice for
Kindergruppe/Jugendgruppe is Thursday’s at 6:
30pm. If you are interested in our group please feel
free to contact me for more information. Thank
you to our members for their continued support!

The Beach Bums
A Tribute to the ‘Beach Boys’
“5 guys from Quebec with strong French accents doing
California music for an Ontario audience…”
That is exactly what happened on Saturday,
March 28 in the Schwaben Hall of the Schwaben
Club. And the show was fantastic!
With Clement singing lead, Rick on lead guitar,
Pierre on rhythm guitar, Sebastian on keyboards,
Serge on bass guitar and Steve on drums, the
Beach Bums belted out songs in 5-part harmony
that truly did the Beach Boys justice.
From love songs to car songs to beach songs,
the Beach Bums did them all…..and did them
extremely well. They thrilled the audience
with Help Me Rhonda, Surfin’ USA, Surfin’ Safari,
409 and crooned In My Room. Sebastian, the
keyboardist, covered most of the falsetto and
Clement carried most of the lead vocals. At one
point in the second half, Pierre caused the ladies
in the crowd to swoon with his mellow bass
voice as he sang lead vocals. The first set ended
with an astounding rendition of Good Vibrations.

Clement gave the stage over to the musicians for
2 sets of Beach Boy instrumentals. The guitarists
were amazing as they strummed through
songs such as Wipe Out. The drummer, Steve,
carried the many drum solos as if he were an
old hand at it, yet he is only in his early 20’s and
wasn’t even born when the Beach Boys were at
the height of their career.
Pierre, the oldest in the group, was described
as a ladies’ man. Clement said, “When Pierre
talks to the sound technicians, he says ‘Hello,
I’m Peter’. But, when he speaks to the ladies, he
says, ‘Hello-o-o-o, my name is Pierre’.
The audience gave the Beach Bums a standing
ovation at the end of the show. In reply, the
band did an encore of the Mamas and Papas’
tune California Dreamin’. Perfect!!
Although attendance was at an all-time low,
I truly hope that the Schwaben Club does not
give up on these tribute evenings. Every one has
been wonderful….and our night at the beach
was the best of all.

It was such a pleasure to attend another Germanlanguage
show at the Schwaben Club. The meal was
first-class and the entertainment was a joy. Thank
you, Schwaben Club, for hosting these memorable
evenings.
The Spring Show on March 28, 2009 played to a
packed house and contained some excellent performances,
as usual. It started off with the Fichtler
Buam. This group was not of the same high quality
as the previous bands brought over for our
shows. They played Slavko Avsenik and German
folkmusic quite competently. The “zackig” was,
however, missing from such songs as Zillertaler
Hochzeitsmarsch, Kufstein, Trompeten Echo and
Slowenischer Bauerntanz.
Rudy Ecker was a different story. His bassy, mellow
voice, a combination of Freddy Quinn, Roger
Whitaker, and Heino, did justice to Freddy’s Unter
Fremden Sterne and, in the second half, a potpourri
of seemanslieder such as Wir Lagen Vor Madegaskar
and Auf der Reeperbahn Nachts um Halbeins. I could
see that he thoroughly enjoyed singing these songs
of the sea and the audience joined him happily in
a singalong. His Junge Komm Bald Wieder brought
tears to my eyes; it was lovely.
Then came Anton aus Tirol. What can I say about
this excellent showman? The audience laughed,
sang, and joined in the action. He had us rais-

ing our Hände zum Himmel. He made us laugh
out loud to his Du Heißt Marie und I’ Bumsdi. He
touched our souls with his new hit Ave Maria der
Berge. Anton also sang about Mein Kleiner Freund
(yes, that is what he was talking about!). He told
Tony Sertic that Tony never sees his own anymore.
Later, Anton asked Katie Kretschmann if she was
married; she replied “Yes”. Anton looked at Henry
Kretschmann and asked her, “Ist das dein Mann?”;
she said “Yes”. Anton then asked, “Hast du kein
Schöneren g’funden?”. I think he was the hit of the
evening.
The headliner was Edith Prock, winner of a 1989
Volksmusik competition with her song Glocken von
Stella Maria. Her voice was very light but she could
belt out the jodelling with strength. She performed
the Koenigsjodler and sounded just like Lolita when
she sang Sag Beim Abschied Leise Servus. Edith lead
a polonaise around the hall to singalong hits like Ja,
Wir San Mi’m Radl Da and O Katharina.
The show ended, as usual, with the complete troupe
onstage, singing Sierra Madre del Sur; the audience
sang along with enthusiasm. It was a wonderful
show. I and everyone who has attended any of these
shows certainly hope that the Schwaben Club will
continue to host these heartwarming evenings.

Passed away peacefully after a lengthy
illness in her home at Lanark Heights.
Anna was born in Alexanderhausen,
Romania, came to Canada in 1957. She
will be sadly missed by her children,
