Thisrating has classified Paringa Estate as an “outstanding wineryregularly producing exemplary wines”In fact, it was awarded by James the honour of being named Winery of the Year. But James Halliday is not alone when handing out accolades for Lindsay and his wines. Most other scribes are full of praise for the range of wines which cover riesling, chardonnay, pinot noir, and in a testament to Lindsay's skill, he is one of the only winemakerswho can consistently produce top grade shiraz from this cool climate region. In fact, the Paringa Estate Shiraz 2004 amassed a staggering 6 Trophies across 6 classesat the 2006 Sydney Royal Wine Show. Paringa continuedfrom frontLindsay produces wines in three distinctgrades. The entry level Peninsula Series arefruit driven with genuine varietalcharacteristics made for current drinking orshort term cellaring. The Estate Series usesfruit from their low-yielding 15 to 20 year oldestate vines with between 30% and 50% newFrench oak being used to produce the uniqueParinga style as Lindsay's “flagship wine”.Cellar for up to 6 years. Finally, are miniscule quantities ofthe best wine they canproduce – but only in vintages when thefruit has reached a required level ofexcellence. These are the Paringa ReserveSeries which have been produced in 2000,2003 and 2004 only, and these wines willreward careful cellaring for 6-10 years. We are able to offer the following wines, but aword of caution. Till2012STONIER INTERNATIONALPINOT NOIR TASTING(THE BIG SURPRISE WAS THE BARGAINS)On Monday July 31st, I ventured along with Phil Smith to the Sofitel Hotel in Melbourne, where the seventh Annual SIPNOT was being conducted. Along with about 200 other“pinot-philes” and a distinguished panel of experts and a visiting high-profile UK winewriter, Matthew Jukes, we gazed at, sniffed and slurped our way through a diversecollection of Californian, New Zealand, Oregon, Australian and French examples of thismost beguiling and temperamental grape variety. Needless, to say, the wines were servedmasked, and there were a number of surprises revealed. The distinguished panel comprised -Brian Croser AO, founder of Petaluma Vineyard in 1976, veteran Chairman ofwine judging panels in Adelaide, Canberra and Sydney.Len Evans, AO OBE, journalist, vineyard owner, wine judge and industry luminary.James Halliday, lawyer, founder of Coldstream Hills winery, senior wine judgeand Australia's most influential wine writer.Geraldine McFaul, Stonier winemaker, and a veteran of over 10 vintages inAustralia and Burgundy. The wines were tasted in 2 brackets of 6 with a panel reviewat after each flight. The wines, in order of tasting with approximate retail value were:Kupe by Escarpment 03 Martinborough, NZ $80Paringa Estate Reserve 04 Mornington Peninsula $90Dom Frederic Mugnier Musigny Grand Cru 03 Burgundy $608Curly Flat 04 Macedon $44Siduri Wines Amber Ridge 04 Sonoma, USA $68Bouchard Pere & Fils Le Corton Grand Cru 03 Burgundy $195Argyle Spirithouse 04 Oregon, USA $72Pisa Range Estate Black Poplar Block O4 Central Otago, NZ $58Bannockburn Vineyards 04 Bellarine Peninsula $50Dom du Clos des Epenaux 1er Cru 03 Burgundy $173Stonier KBS Vineyard 04 Mornington Peninsula $55Dom Armand Rousseau Clos be Beze Grand Cru 03 Burgundy $396Members of the panel went to great lengths to explain that comparing an 04 New World pinot toan 03 Grand Cru Burgundy would generally be classed as a mismatch, because the Burgundywill normally be sleeping in a cellar for 15-20 years before drinking at close to its optimum level. However, the exercise here was to consider the texture, balance and structure of each winebefore making a decision. Mind you, the 2003 vintage in Burgundy was extremely hot, andchallenged even the finest winemakers. In the first flight, the panel chose Paringa, followed by Curly Flat and Kupe although there wasstrong support from the floor for a slightly sulphidic Siduri. One member of theaudience had the audacity to challenge the findings of the paneland the Chairman, Len Evans “put him away” in quite brutal fashion by suggestingthat he needed to “taste a few wines”.There was a marked lift in quality overall in the second flight, and the panel overwhelminglyselected Bannockburn with Armand Rousseau and Argyle showing well also. This reflected the views of the audience, and as far as the Wine of the Night went, in ashow of hands, the Bannockburn edged out Armand Rousseau for top wine. All in all, a great night and the obvious conclusion to be drawn was that the gap betweenthe best of Burgundy and the New World (Victoria in particular) is narrowing.Following the surprise result at the Sydney SIPNOT in 2005 where Stonier Reserve 03“scooped the pool”, the Stonier KBS Vineyard again made a strong showing and attracteda great deal of support. I suppose thegreatest thrill for a pinot lover was to findthat two of the most acclaimed wines of thenight were also two of the least expensive. The Curly Flat at around $44 andBannockburn around $50 were both greatexamples of well-made and enjoyablepinot noir.Eddie KiddQUOTABLE“Wine is the mostcivilized thing in theworld.”ERNESTHEMINGWAYEd

LOVELY STUFF!Georg Breuer Rudesheim riesling 05The Georg Breuer Estate cultivates 30ha of vines in the Rheingauregion of Germany. 23ha of this is from the Rudesheim village. Thehigh slate content of the soil is reflected in this wine which offers a lotof minerallity along with peaches and apricot. The palate is dry andpowerful but also has finesse. The acidity is high but balanced. Willlook great with age and really needs to be paired with food.importsChateau Coupe Roses Minervois 04Minervois is a sub-region of the Languedoc in Southern France; it isnot a well known region but has a reputation for good reds. We havetwo great wines from one of the more quirky producers.“La Bastide” is a blend of old vine grenache and carignan it'scharacters are marked by strong floral and herbal (but not green) aromasand underneath we have dark cherries, spice and a palate that has a firmgrip and densely packed fruit.“Les Plots” is a blend of syrah and grenache with a littlecarignan. This wine has less (but still shows some) of the floralcharacters, but shows a strong savoury, earthy bent. This is astep up in complexity and structure, more reminiscent of aSouthern Rhone blend.Michel Gonet ChampagneThese wines are 100% estate grown and vinified. They have40ha of vineyards including parcels in Grand Cru Villages Avize,Mesnil and Oger. The majority of the production useschardonnay including three Grand Cru Blanc de Blanc wines. The entire range is good, and includes a well priced, complexReserve NV and Blanc de Blanc NV, but the standouts are theirBlanc de Blanc Grand Cru 2001 and their Blanc de Blanc CuveePrestige Grand Cru 1996.The former is lean, tight and mid-weight with very crispminerally acidity. The characters show youthful fruit of lemonand melon, with a high minerality and chalkiness, lanolin andsavoury lees. A very refreshing style that will fill out and becomemore complex with time in bottle. The latter is very pure andfocused, with a light to mid-weight palate and with noticeableacidity but less piercing than the ’01. This wine showscharacters of grapefruit, gun flint, nutty autolytic notes andmuch more but does not show any signs of over-development.This is a very good example of the fantastic 96 vintage.Alain Graillot Crozes-Hermitage Rouge 04Crozes is a large appellation in Northern Rhone, this leads to agreat diversity in soils, climate, wines styles and personalities.Alain Graillot is one of the few producers who are 100% qualityfocused and consistently good.In this issue we are featuring his awe inspiring Rouge. The wineis whole bunch fermented in concrete vats following a coldmaceration, using natural yeasts and no added sulphur. A threeweek vinification with pumping over twice a day after which thewine spends around a year in large oak, only 5-10% of which isnew. There is good depth with blackberry, smoke and mineralnotes, nice flesh and a long, spicy finish. Racy, and refusing tobe spat out, it will benefit from a year or two in the cellar.Roda, Roda 1 & CirsionWe are happy to announce the arrival of the new vintages of thesensational Roda Riojas. To see the full offer please visit ourwebsite www.rathdownecellars.com.au and check out ourPremium wines page.phil’spack6RedoakClarence Street Sydney doesn’t sound like aplace to find some of the best Australian beers. But the people at Redoak are making a rangeof sophisticated 'speciality' beers, at least ascomplex as some of the wines we sell.We are now selling two of their beers.First, we have the Vienna Lager, a styleunsurprisingly, originating around Vienna, andoffering a deeper, almost mahogany, colourthan your average lager. The flavours robust, showing lots of rich malt, and in the mouth it’squite full and round, but not as weighty as anale, with a lovely clean bitterness. This beer willmatch gourmet sausages or grilled veal. The second one is the Belgium Chocolate Stout. This is quite an experience; they take theirstandard Oatmeal Stout and infuse apercentage of real Belgium chocolate. Theoutcome is rich, thick and velvety and offersflavours of bitter and sweet chocolate, burntgrains and a lot more. Naturally this beer willmatch chocolate or chocolate based dishes, but it's very drinkable on its own.Vienna Lager $25 – six pack.Beglium Chocolate Stout $30 – six pack.Phil SmithVALE JOHN MIDDLETONOn Tuesday 26th July, Dr John Middletonpassed away following an illness. In the 1960's, John and a group of YarraValley medicos became interested in wine.John began his Mount Mary Vineyard in 1971at Coldstream. His passion was to replicate,as much as possible, the wines of Bordeauxand Burgundy. He subsequently became anicon in the Australian wine industry, anddespite his aversion to most retailers and asometimes prickly disposition, he encouragedme to appreciate and then sell his wonderfulwines. One of the joys during this time wasthe annual pilgrimage to Mount Mary in earlyDecember to sample the new releases. His wines were not the “full on” 16% style ofwhich he was very critical. His were the moresubtle, seductive French food-friendly styles.Judging by the demand for his product in hereand overseas, he succeeded admirably. We have lost a wonderful friend and the worldis certainly the poorer for his passing.

Leconfield cabernet sauvignon 04After quite a few years in the wildernessLeconfield have come back into form and havemade a beautifully crafted, elegantCoonawarra cab. Showing classic charactersof cassis, tart red berries, mint and a bit ofleafiness. The well defined fruit is surroundedby firm tannins and propped up by goodacidity. This is a wine with a good future.Ageing – give it 5+Pondalowie shiraz viognier 04Ok, so we did mention this wine inthe last newsletter but its really, really good! You don't have to takeour word for it though, JamesHalliday scored it 95points, and ithas won a Gold medal at the LondonInternational Wine Challenge. Thewine itself is dense, brooding andcomplex. Great value too!Ageing – It is looking great now, butI'd love to see it in 10 years too.TOPPICKTorbreck Struie shiraz 04A blend of Barossa and Eden Valley fruit, theStruie is basket pressed and aged in a mixtureof new and old oak. The idea is to makeexpressive wines not over-ripe, over-extractedmonsters. The team at Torbreck got it all right. It’s complex with cassis, violets, white pepperand savoury almost truffle note and hints ofsmoke and game. The palate is long and silkywith good tannin that keeps everything neat.Ageing – Will repay 5-8 years of patiences.Curly Flat chardonnay 04The Macedon wine region certainly offerssome tricky conditions for people trying togrow good quality wine grapes, but places likeCurly Flat do it well on a consistent basis. Ingreat years, like 2004, they can produce worldclass wines. The chardonnay possessesChablis like characters of high acid, light butpowerful, long and complex palate and a veryclean, fresh and vibrant nose. They also offer agreat 2003 vintage pinot. Both wines will beon tasting on 7th October.Ageing – Give it 5-10 for best resultsRockford New ReleasesOur favourite Barossa producer has released afew new wines, which will either are or shortlywill be available. Eden Valley Riesling 2004– a super release of this exceptional Rieslingthat consistently over-delivers at the price.Alicante Bouchet 2006 (stelvin) – Springmeans the release of our biggest selling roseand easily the best qualified "cult rose"around. Moppa Springs 2002 – a GrenacheMataro Shiraz blend showing delicious juicyGrenache fruit with soft mellow earthy notes. And finally the unsung hero of the Rockfordwhite range – Frontignac 2006 (stelvin). Thiswine is the undisputed king when it comes toAsian food, and believe it or not, it agesremarkably well too.O'Leary Walker rieslings 06This time every year we rave about Polish Hilland Watervale rieslings are. This year I’d saythe 2006 wines, and the Watervale especially, are the best new release rieslings I've seenfrom Australia. The Watervale is tight with lean, taut acidity that promises long life. It has highminerality, candied citrus, some sweet spiceand a chalky/phenolic backbone. An absolutebaby. The Polish Hill is more lifted aromatically, with a note of fresh white flowers to go withcitrus fruits and lemon blossom. The palate is abit more giving too, with more fruit weight butstill showing lovely acidity.Ageing – Drink now and/or wait for 10+Longview Vineyard range. The recent Longview releases have reallyimpressed us for the quality and drinkability. We’re stocking the 'Whippet' sauvignon blanc05, 'Iron Knob' riesling and 'Black Crow'nebbiolo. The Whippet shows a dry, lean palate, zesty citrus & tropical fruit, plus hints of herbsstraw and hay. A stunning example of coolclimateEuropean style sauv. The riesling, madeby the O'Leary Walker team, offers charactersof lime, grapefruit and mandarin with a gun flintnote. The palate is fuller and more texturedthen the classic Clare Valley style but the winesis still bone dry and offers great acidity. The nebbiolo is savoury with charcuterie-likenotes with black cherry, earth, leather, tar, roses, and more. The palate has classic velvetyfruit with firm, powerful tannins and high acid.Ageing – Sauv blanc, drink now. Riesling, nowto 5 years. Nebbiolo, leave for 5-10 years.new wines and vintagesHeartland shiraz 05Made by Ben Glaetzer of Glaetzer Wines fame. This shiraz from the Langhorne Creek andLimestone coast is the epitome of “glugable”.It has lively aromas of roses, cherries, raspberries and a whole lot more. Rich andjuicy palate with ripe red berries, spice. Perfectto match “the before the weather gets too hot”roasts and casseroles of the yearAgeing – You won't keep your hands off it.Lashmar sister blend 03The sisters blend consists of cabernet, shirazand merlot, that has been aged in oak for 20months. When we tried the wine with thewinemaker Colin Cooter (from Lengs & Cooter)it was sensational and could sell for around$30 mark. When we heard we could do it for$22 we ordered some on the spot. The blendoffers juicy red berries, dried spices, subtlewith integrated oak and a lovely long palate.Great for all sorts of meat based dishes.Ageing – Ready now, but will go a few years.Trevor Jones Wild Witch shiraz 02For many years Trevor Jones has beenreleasing some stunning, good value winesunder his own name, and we really had to takenote when James Halliday gave the Wild Witch97 points. His notes read “similar to thestandard release (intense, elegant, focusedand very long in the mouth), except that theintensity is even more pronounced, the lengthlikewise; an inherent elegance despite all thepower; oak and tannins where they should be”Ageing – 5 would be good but 10+ better.Balgownie Estate wines 04One of our most successful tastings ever washeld in mid-August when Tobias Ansted, theBalgownie wine-maker released his 04 wines. The Estate was established in 1969 and wineswere first made by the legendary StuartAnderson. Tobias now has the brand firmly backon track after changes in the late ‘90’s. Theseare dark brooding wines and at the priceoffered, cannot be ignored by wine enthusiasts.Ageing- The shiraz for around 10 years, but thecabernet sauvignon will go much longer.Trentham Estate nebbiolo 03Following on from the last newsletter where weraved about Italian nebbiolo we decided to givesome Aussie examples a go. Trentham Estate’sis definitely one of merit. The varietal charactersare all there, cherries, tar, tobacco, roses, andmyriad dry spices. The palate, while showingsome of the neb tannin, is far softer and juicierthan the Italian styles.Ageing – Not necessary.
