Dear brothers and sisters,
On June 1, we began the observance of A Month of Prayer for
Religious Freedom in the Archdiocese of San Antonio under
the leadership of Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller. The
Month is actually 34 days of prayer, study, catechesis, and action, climaxed by the 14-day
“Fortnight for Freedom” which the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has encouraged
dioceses and Catholic institutions to observe from the 22 nd of June through the 4 th of
July.
This past April 12, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) issued a document
titled Our First, Most Cherished Liberty in which they detail concerns over serious threats to our religious
freedom and freedom of conscience. In addition to various threats to our way of life over
the past several years, our freedom of religion and freedom of conscience are currently threatened
by the “H.H.S. Mandate” which –unless it is rescinded by the government or declared void by the Supreme
Court– will have serious consequences to our life as Catholics and Americans. The immediate
challenge we face as the Body of Christ is that of defending our first, most cherished liberty, that
freedom of religion and of conscience which are at the heart of the founding of this great nation
and at the heart of what we celebrate every 4 th of July.
As the people of God, we must pray! And we must learn what is being sought and fought. Let us
pray to be made one in heart and mind, bishops and people, together defending our right to exercise
the religious liberty guaranteed by the First Amendment which states: “Congress shall make no
law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.”
The Archbishop is inviting each of us to do the following:
1. Pray and fast! You will find the suggested prayer on a new web page we have developed.
Print it and pray it! Pray daily –alone, with your family, with your community, and in your parishes
and schools for the next 34 days– especially during the Novena of Prayer for Religious Freedom
(June 22-30), leading up to our Let Religious Freedom Ring prayer event on Sunday, July 1. We
are also urged to consider fasting for the success of our efforts and the protection of our liberties.
2. Visit our new freedom of religion web page! Click on this link (Freedom of Religion Website)
and you will be able to pray in Spanish and English for the protection of religious freedom; view
the calendar of events for A Month of Prayer for Religious Freedom; visit the official website for the
movie For Greater Glory; read a letter from Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller and Bishop Oscar
Cantú; go to the USCCB link for Our First, Most Cherished Liberty: A Statement on Religious Liberty of

highly recommend you read; study papal and other church documents; learn about The Participation

find additional resources for prayer, study, catechesis, and public action.

3. Share this Freedom of Religion Calendar! Click on that calendar link and share it with your
contacts, family, friends, fellow parishioners, and neighbors via email, Facebook, Twitter,
blogs, newsletters, and in good old-fashioned face-to-face encounters. The calendar has over a
dozen events in the Archdiocese of San Antonio to raise awareness of the need to defend and
protect our liberties: several Masses, veneration of saints’ relics, a Flag Day celebration, an interfaith
service, TV shows, newspaper columns, and the ringing of bells in churches on Sunday,
July 1.
4. Watch Prepare the Way on Catholic Television of San Antonio (CTSA-15) where host Martha
Fernández-Sardina and her guest Bishop Oscar Cantú the topics of the defense of religious
freedom and freedom of conscience in our own nation and the persecution of the Church in
Mexico in the 1920s - the story of the priests and lay men and women martyred by the Mexican
government during the religious persecution of the early 20 th century which highlights the
price paid by many in defense of religious freedom around the world across the centuries, and
invites us to reflect on erosions to religious freedom in our own nation. Prepare The Way airs
Mondays (11:30 am), Wednesdays (10:30 am), and Fridays (9:30 pm). The two shows can also

5. Go to the movies! We encourage you to view in local theaters the movie For Greater Glory
(Cristiada) featuring Andy Garcia, Peter O’Toole, Eva Longoria, and Eduardo Verástegui,
praised by numerous archbishops and bishops, including Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller,
Bishop Oscar Cantú, Archbishop José H. Gómez, Bishop Plácido Rodríguez, Archbishop William
E. Lori, and many more. For Greater Glory (Cristiada) accurately details the fierce struggle
for religious freedom of the Catholic Church in Mexico during the government’s enforcement
of anti-Catholic laws in the 1920s which forced hundreds of bishops, priests, and laymen to
flee the country (including the grandparents of many in our own area), while thousands more
were tortured, shot, stabbed or hung from church ceilings, trees, and telegram posts alongside
railroad tracks and roads for all to see in terror. For Greater Glory’s retelling of the story of the
Mexican Martyrs - many of whom were beatified and canonized by Blessed Pope John Paul II
and Pope Benedict XVI - includes the moving story of courage and sacrifice of a 14 year-old
boy, Blessed José Sánchez, who was willing to die rather than deny his faith in Christ the King;
the story of the love of a man for his wife, his children, and his freedom, a non-practicing
Catholic general who has a change of heart; the story of the love of an elderly priest for a
youngster and his spiritual development; the story of the love of thousands of Catholics of
every social rank for Cristo the King and for His Church. The movie illustrates the moral dilemmas
faced by those wrestling with the decision to take up arms or engage in a concerted
yet peaceful resistance; the role of wives, mothers, and sisters; the earnest determination of
young and old; the friendship of two teenage boys; the sacrificial love of children and parents
alike; the cruelty of those who fear neither God nor man; and why words can make all the difference
in the world. This is an important piece of history that has been long suppressed from
history books and is now being told in this new film released in US theaters this past June 1.

6. Read about the lives of saints, blessed, and martyrs who paid the ultimate price for freedom!
The relics of six of the Mexican Martyrs canonized by Blessed Pope John Paul II in 2000
were venerated after all Masses at San Fernando Cathedral on the first weekend of June, and
there are many more saintly men and women –including the courageous 14 year-old Blessed José
Sánchez del Río– whose lives are worth reading about and whose intercession we are encouraged

and Andrew Walther, the Knights of Columbus’ Vice-President for Media, Research and Development

Freedom, the Mexican Martyrs of the 1920s, and the role of the Knights of Columbus

9. Read the June 15 issue of Today’s Catholic, the newspaper of the Archdiocese of San Antonio,
to learn more about our first, most cherished liberty and what we can each do, even beyond
the 4 th of July, to protect and defend our freedom of religion and freedom of conscience, and
respond to the call “for an engaged, articulate and well-formed Catholic laity endowed with a strong
critical sense vis-à-vis the dominant culture and with the courage to counter a reductive secularism
which would delegitimize the Church’s participation in public debate about the issues which are determining

all angels and saints, pray for us and with us! May Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the
Americas and Star of the New Evangelization, intercede for us, as together we say with joy, both

victims of war, oppression, and natural disasters and others in
need of emergency assistance. Pope Benedict XVI has said: “It is necessary
