Don’t forgetall your acid loving plants, suchas Azaleas, Camellias, Pieris andRhododendrons, a similar layer ofericaceous compost is needed.in recent years, one of the plantsthat has suffered most with our hardwinters has been Cordylines and ifyou have any, or indeed for any othernon-native exotics, i would recommenda mulch and then a couple oflayers of bubble wrap or horticulturalfleece secured around the wholeof the plant. For roses, a well rottedmanure mulch will keep them snug.Garden Doctor services, Tel:01767 627 581 or 07796 328 855Email: lawnDocGardens@aol.comGuidedtoursTalksat 5.00pm,6.00pm and7.00pmOver 28differentA-LevelsubjectsA-Level Open EveningWednesday 25th January4.30pm-8.00pm Cauldwell Street CampusMorechoice thanany otherlocal sixthform schoolor collegePre-register to avoid the queues:www.bedford.ac.ukd.ac.uk01234 291000Bedford CollegeCauldwell StreetBedford MK42 9AH

8 BULLETIN JANUARY 2012 TEL: 01234 834700 EDITORIAL: editorial@biggleswadebulletin.co.ukKings Arms Angling Club – raising money for St John’sTHE Kings Arms Angling Club insandy is undoubtedly one of the moreunusual piscatorial associations inthe district. it was originally foundedby the Butler family, father Trevorand his two sons ian and Chris, andhas now been in existence for morethan eleven years.unlike most angling clubs it is notinto serious match fishing but it isvery much about ‘angling for fun’and it organises a wide-range ofsocial and outdoor activities. Over thepast year there have been monthlyoutings to local lakes and rivers aswell as special events at shuttleworthpark the Elinor trout fishery inNorthants, sea fishing on Walton pierWhy gum disease affects more than just your mouthiN the olden days, if you went to thedentist you would more than likelycome out minus a tooth. But in moderndentistry we are more concernedwith trying to prevent problems thanhaving to fix them.We all want a beautiful smile andsparkling white teeth, but the sad factis that at some time during their life, nine out of ten people reading thiscolumn will have developed gumdisease which is a serious health riskcaused by poor dental hygiene. Thisgum inflammation is calledGingivitis and the first signs are usuallybleeding during brushing, swollen or tender gums and yourgums changing from a healthy pinkto a darkish red colour.if you experience these symptomsthen seek help from your dentalhygienist because left untreated, your gum disease could lead to amore serious condition calledPeriodontitis, which can lead to damageof the bone and ligaments whichhold your teeth in place. if thishappens then your teeth may becomeloose and eventually fall out.But gum disease can lead to evenmore serious conditions. Becausethe gums are damaged, the bacteriain the plaque can enter the bloodstream, increasing the risk of heartattack and strokes. Gum disease canalso affect pregnancy and mayincrease the risk of having low birthweightor pre-term babies. The secret of fighting gumdisease is good oral hygiene.set up an oral health programmeat home and get the whole familyinvolved in brushing their teethregularly morning and night for twominutes each timeBrush your teeth before breakfast.Acidic foods such as orangejuice soften the enamel on your teeth;so if you brush after breakfast youmay wear the enamel away whichwill eventually lead to tooth loss.Change your toothbrush at leastevery three months; a worn outtoothbrush harbours millions ofgerms.use dental floss to remove fooddebris before it becomes plaque.Kill gum bacteria by rinsing yourmouth with an antibacterial mouthwashafter brushing.Arrange regular visits to yourdental hygienist who will not onlyremove hard plaque, but can detectthe early signs of gum disease andtreat it before it becomes serious.Remember, having healthy teethand gums isn’t just about lookinggood and feeling good, it’s abouthelping you to improve your healthand wellbeing. For more information about oralhygiene and dental care visitwww.ballardandtucker.co.uk or toarrange an appointment call Ballardand Tucker on 0844 576 9888.Your local cleaningcompanyHOMEBRIGHTFully vetted andinsured cleaners ataffordable ratesand the annual predator match on theforty foot drain near Ramsey. Wilkinsonhas retired from test rugby after 91England caps but his influence on thegame will be carried on by the thousandsof youngsters that turned torugby after the 2003 world cup.Wilkinson was the perfect professional, calm, a ferocious tackler andtotally committed. stories aboundthat his dedication to training wassuch that the Newcastle ground staffhad to coax Jonny to go home after atraining session by tuning off thefloodlights. Wilkinson was still practicinglong after the rest of the squadhad gone for their supper. At a recentevening book signing atTwickenham, the crowd was hugebut Jonny insisted that everyone whobought a book would have it signed. He did not leave until 2.30am the followingmorning! But for a series ofbad injuries (knee, shoulder and kidneys)he would have gone on tobreak more point’s records. Off thepitch his shyness is apparent, seemingalmost embarrassed by the attentionthat he was given. irrationallyobsessive (his words) a follower ofBuddhism and with a keen businesseye he has already laid the foundationsto a career after rugby when hisclub contract with Toulon finishesnext season Wilkinson’s legacies arethe many players in the sport whowere encouraged to take up rugby bywatching his international performances.Goodbye Jonny and thanksfor the memories.New man for theSix NationsEngland welcomes stuartlancaster to head the national sidefor the six Nations Championshipstarting in February. lancaster hasbeen in the England set up for a fewyears and has taken charge of theelite squad until after the sixNations.A reminder that the six Nationschampionship starts on February 4thwith France vs italy at 2.30pm followedby scotland vs England at5pm.
