� It must be clean and convenient to handle and carry out from the store<br />
easily.<br />
� It must be identifiable and attract consumers.<br />
� It must resist spoiling.<br />
� It must be informative about wheat i.e. name and address <strong>of</strong> the packer,<br />
pack size, quality / grade, quantity, variety and date <strong>of</strong> packing etc.<br />
Method <strong>of</strong> Packing<br />
� The graded wheat should be packed in new, clean, sound and dry jute<br />
bags, cloth bags, poly woven bag, polypropylene high molecular, high<br />
density polyethylene or food grade packaging materials.<br />
� The packages should be free from insect infestation, fungus<br />
contamination and obnoxious smell.<br />
� Each package should be securely closed.<br />
� Each package should contain wheat <strong>of</strong> one grade only.<br />
� The wheat should be packed in standard pack size as specified under<br />
the provisions <strong>of</strong> Standards <strong>of</strong> Weights and Measures (packages<br />
commodities) Rules, 1977 as amended from time to time.<br />
Packaging Material<br />
Recently, a policy decision has been taken by the Government <strong>of</strong> India to increase the<br />
obligatory minimum use <strong>of</strong> jute bags from 60 per cent for food grains, under the provision <strong>of</strong> Jute<br />
Packaging Materials (compulsory use in Packing Commodities) Act, 1987. Now, Govt. <strong>of</strong> India<br />
has made it obligatory to pack entire food grains in jute bags only. The consumer packing <strong>of</strong><br />
cleaned wheat in 15 kgs. by retailers and super markets has also been made mandatory in jute<br />

The following packaging material is used :<br />
� Jute bags<br />
� HDPE / pp bags<br />
� Polythene impregnated jute bags<br />
� Cloth bags.<br />
3.6 Transportation :<br />
In the distribution <strong>of</strong> wheat, the means and cost <strong>of</strong> transport play an important role. The<br />
cost <strong>of</strong> transport is the major factor responsible for the wide differences, which exist between<br />
prices in surplus and deficit areas.<br />
