The Sisters of Mercy and the manypeople who continue to work along side them have much to beproud of and much to be grateful for also. ReflectionsMercy’s Junior class was “officially” welcomed as upperclasswomen at the Junior Pin Ceremony in October.Gabrielle Coors ‘10 spoke eloquently about her thoughts on being part of the Mercy community. When asked to describe how I feel about being a junior, I findit hard to describe the emotions I have. I’m caught between thesorrow of soon leaving Mercy and the excitement of what liesbeyond. When I sat down to write this reflection, I wasn’t surewhat I was going to write. Then I looked over at my little sister,Catie. She turned to me and said, “Whatcha gonna write, Gabby?Do you know what letters to use? I can help you.” This comesfrom a child of four. As I look at her, I realize that she will one daybe in this same position. Most definitely here at Mercy, becausethere is no way that I, knowing what I know about Mercy, wouldlet my sister go anywhere else. I know she will be here, contemplatingher past and what has brought her here, as well as apprehensiveof the future. This is how I feel today.Looking back, grade school is a blur with the occasional highpoints or memories. And it feels like it was just the other day thatwe all walked through Mercy’s welcoming doors to join thestudents here and those who have gone before. As the years havepassed, and man, did they fly by, I have come to more fullyunderstand the legacy that Mother of Mercy has. We have a strongbackground in exceptional test scores compared to the nationalaverages; this should make us feel good as we prepare to take thePSAT, SAT, ACT. Mercy has a long legacy of women rooted in faith.I don’t know if you have ever noticed it, but there is a board nextto the doors on the first floor that lists all of the women of Mercywho have gone on to the religious life. Not only are Mercy alumsin religious life, but they are making their way through all areas ofour world today. From moms to engineers, they permeate everyarea of society, and know what it means to be part of a greaterpicture of family, like the one here at Mercy – the circle of Mercy. We are a very service-based school. Though it may not seem like itnow, the opportunities that we are given to do service in our daysat Mercy will be fond and invaluable assets to how we live our livesin the future. Today we are given the knowledge andtools we will need later in life to make decisions andbecome developed and well-informed young womenAs upperclasswomen, we are expected to utilizethese things and carry on the Mercy legacy by beingleaders and examples to those who look up to us. Weare held accountable by the underclasswomen. Wedemonstrate what “school pride” really is and what itmeans to show respect to ourselves and others. This is agreat responsibility, and we understand this. We canalso feel the rise of even greater responsibility as senioryear draws ever closer. We eagerly await the day we candon our caps and gowns and walk down one aisle andup another into a whole new world. But this eagernessis tinged with sorrow as we realize what we will beleaving behind. I know that I have often found myselfcaught up in looking forward and up to that vision thatis college life. What we sometimes forget is that weneed to relax and soak in our present experience. Howmany times have we heard, “these are the memoriesthat last a lifetime?”Though we may have heard talk that junior year is the hardestacademically, don’t let these be the times that try a girl’s soul; letthese be the times that enrich them. Don’t look back on anindifferent part of your life. Make these the best, greatest and lastmoments of our adolescence before we step forward to take on therole of young women in the fast-paced world of tomorrow. This isthe grand finale of our childhood, but only the overture of ouradult lives. So make it worthwhile, girls, it’s a ride that ends soon. Therollercoaster is now just a blur; as it draws to a close, the last criticalturns are made before we pull back into the station. Just to pileout and board yet another wild ride. So enjoy the last loop-deeloop,set an example, behave yourself, and don’t make me comeback there, juniors!2

Mercy FoundationsConnected to Our Irish HeritageA community lives, works, prays and plays together. It alsorecognizes its roots, the basics of what brought it together as acommunity in the first place. Mother of Mercy recognizes andembraces our rich Irish heritage in the history of Catherine McAuleyand the Sisters of Mercy. In order to tangibly connect the Mercycommunity to these Irish roots, Mercy Student Council used thefoundations that Catherine McAuley established to identify eachgroup within our Mercy community. The Circle of Mercy began with Catherine McAuley’s firstfoundation on Baggot Street in Dublin. The entire Mercy communityis represented by the Baggot Street Banner, with its symbol ofthe Mercy Cross. It connects us all, all of us who make up Mercy, showing that it starts with us, living out the spirit of Mercy andcontinuing to spread that spirit throughout the world. The Kingstown Foundation represents Mercy alumnae, with itssymbol of the teacup; it shows the alumnae carryingthe light and spirit of Mercy beyond Mercy’s walls.Alumnae offer their gifts and talents to the greatercommunity and give back to the community thatshaped and formed them.Mercy’s administration is identified by the Kinsale Foundationand its symbol of the Mercy Shield. The originalKinsale Foundation led to the founding of theCincinnati Sisters of Mercy in 1858. The administrationat Mercy today continues to be leaders, committed to education of young women. The Tullamore Foundation was the second one that Catherineestablished, providing education for children and care for the pooramong extreme poverty and desolate conditions in Tullamore.Mercy’s faculty, using the Celtic symbol of the Trinity, are representedby the Tullamore Foundation, as they are the basis forproviding Mercy students a safe place to learn. In Charleville, Catherine and the Sisters found terrible conditionsbut remained strong and dedicated to the children and theneedy, determined to show that God does provide. We are all poorin some way and the Charleville banner with its symbol of the CelticCross, represents the Mercy support staff belief that God neversabandons us.The Class of 2009, the seniors, proudly display the LimerickFoundation and its symbol of the leprechaun’s hat, reminding themto be models of friendship and encouragement. The junior class, Class of 2010, enjoys their symbol of a pot of4

Catherine McAuley began her work in Birr at theinvitation of a parish priest, to bring peace to a divided community. The Class of 2011 is call to spread the spirit of peace throughoutour Mercy family. The sisters in Catherine’s Carlow foundation were not afraid togo out into the world and make things different. The Class of 2012is represented by the Carlow Foundation and symbol of the clover, being beacons of energy and school spirit as they begin theirjourney as part of the Mercy community. Finally, Mercy’s benefactors, parents, friends and members ofthe Sisters of Mercy are represented by the Cork Foundation and itssymbol of the Claddagh. This symbol models loyalty and steadfastness. All of us in the Circle of Mercy remain connected to the past, while we make the most of the present and hope for the future. The Suscipe of Catherine McAuleyMy God, I am yours for time and eternity.Teach me to cast myself entirely into the arms of your loving providence, with the most lively, unlimted confidence in your compassionate, tender pity.Grant me, O most merciful Redeemer, that whatever you ordain or permit may be acceptable to me.Take from my heart all painful axiety;suffer nothing to sadden me but sin, nothing to delight me but the hope of coming to the possession of you,my God and my all, in your everlasting kingdom.Mother of Mercy High SchoolAlumnaeAlumnae are represented by the Kingstown Foundation with itssymbol of the teacup. The Circle of MercyThe Circle of Mercy embraces the whole world and all walks of life.See how close to “home” and how far flung that Circle can be!7 milesMother of Mercy High School congratulates the following Mercyalumnae who were officially admitted to the University ofCincinnati College of Pharmacy recently: (l-r) Sarah Sagers ’02,Sarah Schaefer ’06, Jackie Helmes ’06, Emma Chermely ’06, AnnieAlexander ’06, Mindy Stanton ’06 and Jessica Gottman ’04. Out ofthe 1000 students who applied and the 96 who were admitted,Mercy is proud that over 7% of them are Mercy alums!I think the strength and empowerment in women that Mercyprovided has served me well. For example, I am the first and onlyfemale coach in the children’s soccer league - Pilka Nozna. It is aleague sponsored by the American School and British School withover 400 kids ages 4-11. Girls do not play many sports in Europe, and although I did not make Mercy’s soccer team, I continued toenjoy playing recreationally through St Catharine’s Parish and withthe Cincinnati Recreation Commission. When I said I would helpcoach, I was asked about what type of experience I had. Now Iknow they do not ask this question of the men, but I was notintimidated, I smiled and was able to prove with my actions I wasqualified.Mercy encouraged leadership and individuality. I am comfortablein both roles. The Drama program gave me the strength tospeak before a group, and speak my voice. We are the only American family in my husband’s office. Thechildren attend the American School of Warsaw, yet less than 20%of the population is American. Often, people ask us questions,“How could the US do this; why did YOU do that?” We are oftencalled upon to defend or comment on issues made by our leaders. Iam confident in my ability to articulate my positions. I believe thisis due to the various debates and perhaps controversial topics thatwere discussed in an open environment at Mercy.”64718 milesPatricia Dagenbach Halsey ‘87 is living in Warsaw, Poland, on athree -year assignment with her husband’s company. When askedif her Mercy education prepared her for their current Europeanadventure, Pat tells us: “First of all, I strongly believe in Catholiceducation, and think a strong moral foundation is very importantfor whatever life path you choose. History has not been kind to thePolish people, yet they retain a strong identity and purpose, andthe Catholic church, especially the late Pope John Paul II, hasplayed a major role.6642 milesFollowing her graduation from the University of Cincinnati (BA-Anthropology), Katie Laupola ‘04 departed for one year of service inAmerican Samoa as a WorldTeach volunteer this summer. WorldTeachis a non-profit, non-governmental organization that provides opportunitiesfor individuals to make a meaningful contribution tointernational education by living and working as volunteer teachersin developing countries.
