AVAILABLEWORKSHOPS

4 WEEKFILMMAKINGWORKSHOPThe Four Week Workshop provides students with a thorough introductionto the foundations of film craft. Many students find the one-month lengthfits conveniently into their yearly schedules. The workshop is a full-timeprogram. Students must be prepared to make a serious commitment toits completion.FORMATThe program is structured around the production of three short films ofincreasing complexity. Classes and hands-on workshops are heldthroughout the week and some weekends are reserved for additionalclasses or shooting. Evenings are spent on writing, locations, casting, andediting. The final week is devoted to shooting and editing the final film, culminating in the final screening. As with all <strong>Del</strong>-<strong>York</strong>/New <strong>York</strong>?FilmAcademy workshops, each student writes, directs, shoots and edits aseries of short film projects of his or her own using Arriflex 16mmcameras, Lowel lighting packages, and Apple Final Cut Pro digital editingsystems. Classes in directing, writing, editing, cinematography, andproduction cover the creative and technical demands of telling a storywith moving images. Each week all the students' films are screened andcritiqued in class with the instructor.CLASSESThe following classes are designed to be of immediate and practical usein an integrated curriculum. Each week students are able to immediatelyapply the lessons learned in their classes to the films they are producing.DIRECTOR'S CRAFTDirector's Craft serves as the spine of the workshop, introducing studentsto the language and practice of filmmaking. Through a combination ofhands-on exercises, screenings, and demonstrations, students learn thefundamental directing skills needed to create a succinct and moving film. This class prepares students for each of their film projects and is thevenue for screening and critiquing their work throughout the course.WRITINGThe writing course adheres to the philosophy that -good directing cannotoccur without a well-written script. The course is designed to build afundamental understanding of dramatic structure which is essential towriting an engaging film. Arc, theme, character, tension, and conflict arethoroughly explored.EDITINGThis class teaches the language of editing and the organization of filmand sound material. Films are shot on 16mm film and edited digitally withFinal Cut Pro on Apple computers. While students learn how to use thenonlinear editing software, the emphasis is on the craft of editing, whichchallenges students to create cogent sequences that best serve the story.HANDS-ON CAMERA/LIGHTINGBeginning on day one, this no-nonsense cameraclass allows students to learn the fundamental skillsof the art of cinematography with the Arriflex 16-S,the Lowel VIP Lighting Kit and its accessories. Inthe first week, students shoot and screen tests forfocus, exposure, lens perspective, film latitude,slow/fast motion, contrast, and lighting. Studentsare also introduced to the fundamentals of digitalcinematography using 24p digital cameras.THE CAMERA PACKAGEStudents will use the Arriflex 16-S 16 mm cameras. This camera has filmed and served as the camerafor countless documentaries, music videos and lowbudget films. Our cameras have variable speedmotors, which allow you to create images whosespeed varies from ultra fast to very slow.It has been proven time and again that filmmakersarmed with our equipment can produce outstandingfilms. The <strong>Del</strong>-<strong>York</strong>/New <strong>York</strong> Film Academychallenges the filmmaker to use the camera, lights, and lenses to best tell their stories.

4 WEEKFILMMAKINGWORKSHOPPRODUCTION WORKSHOPThis class is designed to demystify the craft of filmmaking through in-classexercises shot on film under the supervision of the instructor. Through thisin-class practice, students learn to articulate the objective of a given scene, which allows the necessary craft and techniques to follow. The Production Workshop gives students the opportunity to learn whichtechniques will help them express their ideas most effectively. The following subjects will be covered and practiced in the Hands-OnCamera, Lighting, and Production Workshop:1. Film StocksProperties of black and white, color reversal, and negative emulsions.2. Exposure MetersPractical and creative ways of measuring and evaluating light through incidentlight readings.3. Basic LightingThree point lighting, hard and soft light, bounced light and available light, andlighting continuity.4. LensesPractical tests on how different focal lengths and f-stops affect the mood of thescene and the attention of the viewer.5. CoverageThe long shot, establishing shot, matching shot, sight lines and screen direction.6. FiltersStudents learn to use black and white contrast filters and red, green, and yellowfilters to get the effects they desire for their films.THE LIGHTING PACKAGEAll crews will be given a lighting package that has been tailored by theFilm Academy to meet the needs of workshop productions. The kitcombines portability with lighting needs: it is small enough to fit into acar, yet provides enough power to create a well-lit interior scene withina reasonable amount of time.To cite some examples of films that were lit with simple, portablepackages, often less sophisticated than the kits we employ at NYFA:Steven Spielberg, DirectorFilm—AmblinNo dolly shots and used only reflectors.Nick Gomez, DirectorFilm—Laws of GravityShot in only ten days; a feat allowed through the use of portable lightingkits, bounce boards, and practical light bulbs.CREWWhile every student in the program writes anddirects his or her own films, it is important thatstudents realize that filmmaking is a collaborativeart. Students form three or four person crews andgain invaluable experience rotating in the principalproduction positions:Writer/ Director/ Editor/ProducerDirector of PhotographyAssistant CameraGaffer/GripBy getting behind the camera as a cinematographer, students train their eyes for composition and learnto respect the difficulties of setting up a shot.Similarly, by working as a gaffer and takingresponsibility for the lights, they practice how lightand shadow affects the film. By working in thevarious crew positions students gain empathy andrespect for their crews, this is essential forsuccessful work as a director. These crews function as working groups for eachfilm exercise and the final film. Thus, each studentnot only directs a series of projects, but also worksin crew positions on his or her colleagues' films.Crews are required to meet each week with thedirecting instructor to review their scripts andshooting plans.ASSIGNMENTSThe Film Academy faculty designed a series of filmexercises as building blocks for the final film project. They are intended to instill in each student a degreeof confidence in visual storytelling and to provide afoundation in basic film craft. Those new to filmmaking begin to understand howthe disciplines of writing, cinematography, sound, and editing work together, while those withexperience can practice and refine specific craftskills. All students should seize this opportunity toexperiment freely in order to develop their ability toengage and entertain an audience. Films are shoton 16mm black and white reversal film stock andedited digitally. For their final films, students havethe option of shooting in colour. You graduate with:Certificate, DVD Film ReelEric Rohmer, DirectorFilm—Pauline at the BeachUsed a Lowel soft light kit and a crew of four in only 14 days.

4 WEEKACTINGWORKSHOPFORMATThe Workshop provides students with a thoroughfoundation of acting skills with a specific focus onacting for film. Many students find the one-monthlength fits conveniently into their yearly schedules. The workshop is a full-time program. Students mustbe prepared to make a serious commitment to itscompletion.Unlike other acting workshops, our program isintegrated with our film school. This has manyadvantages for the acting student interested inworking in front of the camera. No matter how beautiful the cinematography or impressive the specialeffects in a film, audiences are drawn in by the struggles of thecharacters on screen. On set, dozens of crew members whirl about, twelve kilowatt lights bore into the eyes, focus tape is pulled to theactor's cheek, and the actor is still expected to give a believable andmoving performance. The Acting for Film Workshop allows students to participate in a trainingprogram that demands full immersion into learning the craft, intensifyingtheir studies and gaining more experience in front of the camera.CLASSESActing for FilmActing TechniqueBusiness of Acting and Audition SkillsFilm CraftVoice and MovementScene StudyMonologuesYou Graduate With:Certificate, DVD Film ReelClasses emphasize the basic elements of the craft ofacting using Stanislavsky's System, scene study, andmonologue work as starting points. In conjunctionwith these classes, students participate in coursesaimed specifically at training the actor for thetechnical requirements of acting on a film set.The Acting for Film Workshops have a full-timeschedule. Students should be prepared to devotedaytime hours to workshops and exercises, andadditional hours in the evenings and on weekendsfor rehearsal. Every student shares the samecurriculum. Much time is spent focusing on scenestudy, voice, and movement. Classes encouragestudents to break down physical and internalinhibitions, and help each student find the mosteffective personal sources for the creation oftruthful characters.Students should be prepared to work in nontraditionalacting classes emphasizing theconstruction and control of character under theunique pressures of a film or television shoot. Filmor video cameras may be used during particularclasses.Another advantage to being housed within a filmschool is that the acting program takes fulladvantage of the numerous films being shot by ourfilm students. Though not required, many actingstudents get invaluable experience in front of thecamera by being cast in student productions.Students are able to compile reels of filmed scenesto use for future casting purposes.

4 WEEKACTINGWORKSHOPCLASSESActing for FilmThe basic tenets of acting translate from stage to screen, but there areskills and knowledge that are specific to the craft of acting for the camera. While the Film Academy explores with students the necessary actingtechniques and elements that must be practiced and understood to givea good performance in general, each student is introduced to acting forthe camera in the very first week of the program. Students learn thebasics of film acting: calibrating performances based upon shot size andangle, hitting marks, emotional and physical continuity, and strength andimagination in acting choices. Over the course of the year, classes devotea majority of time applying skills taught in other classes to acting on afilm set specifically.Acting TechniqueActing teachers throughout the ages have developed many differenttechniques for teaching the craft to aspiring actors. Since actorsoftentimes are required to draw from their many facets of their training tomeet the demands of a role or a director, this acting class teaches a rangeof techniques so that actors can be best prepared for any role they aregiven to play.Audition TechniqueThis class prepares actors for handling the often nerve-wrackingexperience of the audition. These classes focus on such topics as feelingcomfortable at cold readings, preparing a resume, choosing a head-shotphotographer, and developing a career strategy. While theater actors alsoseek to deliver realistic and moving performances, the demands of film onabsolute authenticity are so great that most theater actors find itnecessary to hone their craft specifically for the demands of modernfilmmaking to deliver good performances in this medium. The <strong>Del</strong>-<strong>York</strong>/New <strong>York</strong> Film Academy seeks to give acting students a thoroughfoundation in traditional acting techniques, yet allow them to have a trueunderstanding of the differences between acting on the stage andperforming for the camera. The class directs the actor's attention towards thebody as an instrument of expression. Students trainin uncovering and developing natural movement, and learn how to overcome inhibitions.Scene StudyStudents use the techniques they learn in the firstweek Acting Technique class to break downscenes into "beats" (i.e. moments of emotionaltransition) and then assign specific psychologicalactions, physical actions, and obstacles to each beat. They incorporate various acting techniques includingStanislavsky's System and Strasberg's Method, aswell as the skills learned in the Meisner Techniqueclass. Additionally, students learn how to build acomprehensive scored script that includes: a lengthycharacter biography, description of the dramatic arc,as well as how environment impacts the character'soverall objective. Scene Study class culminates witha showcase presentation for classmates, faculty, andan invited audience at the end of the program.MonologuesIn Monologues, students learn the skills necessaryto hone and focus their acting skills when theycannot rely on a scene partner to carry themthrough. Students work on monologues fromtheatre and film sources that help them learn howto command attention with their acting.Film CraftThis class introduces acting students to the language and grammar offilmmaking. This includes an understanding of shot language, eye lines, screen direction, camera movement, and lighting. Film Craft aims to helpthe actor communicate more effectively with directors and increase theirunderstanding of the film medium.Voice and MovementIn this class, students are taught a repertoire of exercises that increasemental and physical awareness, improve body alignment, and stimulatenatural, reflexive breathing. Students study how to open channels in thebody that controls the vibrations, resonance, and range of the humanvoice.
