Every year, this generates large quantities of asphalt residue.With proper treatment, these can be reused in the construction of new,cost-effective roads.Innovative technology for usewith Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement(RAP) in high-quality layersThe first priority when using RAP in upper,high-quality layers is the parity of asphaltpavement performance with and withoutRAP. In particular, this means that the criteriafor resistance against deformation and coldtemperature flexibility are equally fulfilledin both cases.In the late 1990s, <strong>Shell</strong> had alreadyidentified the potential of reclaimed asphaltand started to develop a new bindertechnology for the application and usageof RAP in high quality surfacing materials.<strong>Shell</strong> <strong>Cariphalte</strong> <strong>RC</strong> is designed for theapplication and usage of RAP in highperformance road applications. By modifyingthe performance of the bitumen, RAP cannot only be used in base layers but also inupper, high-quality layers and therefore canhelp users meet applicable recycling andwaste management criteria.<strong>Shell</strong> <strong>Cariphalte</strong> <strong>RC</strong> – a newgeneration of binderDue to the method of application of RAP tothe asphalt mixture and the fact that it doesnot normally contain modified bitumen,the concentration of polymer in the addedpolymer modified bitumen (PMB) canbecome diluted and therefore parity withasphalt pavement performance withoutRAP cannot always be readily achieved.In order to mitigate this effect, <strong>Shell</strong><strong>Cariphalte</strong> <strong>RC</strong> is formulated to delivera higher concentration of polymer tocompensate for this dilution, comparedto standard polymer-modified bitumen.
