3.MotivationMy motivation as a researcher stems from a desireto address some of the deficiencies in the currentstate of our interactions with machines, as detailedabove. But there is a personal motivation as well.My family used to take trips to national parks. These were some of my favorite vacations becauseI liked to walk inside landscapes that were muchlarger than I was. I liked to be able to see thingsdistantly and then gradually to approach them andfind them to be even more richly detailed than Ihad imagined them. I was a computer child too, soI often thought about this in terms of resolutionand quantization—how the strongest flavors ofthe real world were due to its infinite resolution.Every pinecone had something interesting to sayunder each one of its scales if you took the time toexamine it with eyes and fingers. No simulation Ihad ever experienced had that power. They reachedonly as far as the attention of their creators. ButI dreamed of making that simulation. My fantasywas to be able to take flight from where I stood andzoom in any direction to close in at high speed onanything that caught my interest. I would be able toexperience it in all of its detail. The fantasy has faded, but what hasn’t left me isa love of the real. What I understand better noware the limits of computation. I no longer dreamabout producing such a system inside the machine.Instead I have turned my attention to an idea thatI think holds more promise: the integration of thereal and computed. Rather than try to simulatethe qualities of the world I love, why not let theworld stand and be present in all its complexity. Ihave been trying to make systems that engage thephysical world rather than deny it.Figure 3.1. I vividly remember BryceCanyon in Utah. [http://globetr.bei.tonline.de]Of course, thanks to the house, a greatmany of our memories are housed, andif the house is a bit elaborate, if it has acellar and a garret, nooks and corridors, our memories have refuges that areall the more clearly delineated. Allour lives we come back to them in ourdaydreams.—Gaston Bachelard[Bachelard, 1964; 8]32
