The following is the result of those discussions:The overall mission is to celebrate diversity... of people, values, ideas and activities. This mission is made up of three key elements:THE ROUNDHOUSE AS PROJECTAll of us who work or play or socialize at the Roundhouse will be active participants in an evolvingproject to find new and creative ways to integrate the arts, community, culture and sports.THE ROUNDHOUSE AS OASISThe Roundhouse is located in the centre of one of the largest urban experiments in history, transforminga few hundred acres of mostly vacant lots into one of North America’s densest and mostdiverse urban sites. The Roundhouse will be an oasis in the centre of this dynamic mix, enablingpeople to use their creativity and energy (at whatever level) to rejuvenate themselves and to bebetter equipped to face a blizzard of challenges and opportunities around them.THE ROUNDHOUSE AS CONNECTIONThe Roundhouse exists to identify and serve the needs of widely divergent communities. To dothis the Roundhouse must reach out to the places and situations where those communities feelcomfortable. These relationships will grow into Roundhouse programs through sponsorships, partnerships, and our own productions.Where we areThe Roundhouse is located at the corner of Davie & Pacific • The Yaletown-Roundhouse Canada LineStation is 100 feet from us, and Buses C21 & C23 stop within feet of the Roundhouse. •Getting to the RoundhouseWalking from Granville Street, head east five blocks down Davie • Underground pay parking is available(access off Drake) for $2/hour; $12 max/7am-6pm weekends and holidays and $3/6-11pmeveryday. WElcomePresident's messageHaving assumed the position of President of the Roundhouse Community Arts and RecreationSociety, I would like to acknowledge all the hard work and professionalism ofpast president, Dr.V.Setty Pendakur. He has dedicated many years to leading the Associationand has contributed significantly to the growth and development of this centre.Dr. Pendakur has played a major role in consulting and advising staff and volunteers inthe progress of this unique Arts and Recreation Community Centre, which has led it tobe named, for the third year running, the best community centre in Vancouver. Dr. V.Setty Pendakur is a hard act to follow. There are many programs and activities that should appeal to all age groups, backgroundsand interests. Programs that, we hope, will help and improve, not only physicalhealth but mental stimulation and well-being.We are working on expanding our children’s art programs as well as offering a varietyof different afterschool and weekend programming for the coming seasons. Our artsprogrammers are working with artists in three underutilized park field houses (HaddenPark, Slocan Park and Burrard Marina) as part of the Park Board initiative to engagecommunity members in creative community building as part of our everyday lives.Major events occurred at the Roundhouse during the summer period. We finallycompleted the renovation of the outdoor Turntable Plaza and are looking forward toexciting and innovative programming that could take place on this site, which shouldappeal to all members of the community. Our new Community Recreation Supervisor,Daisy Chin, with her many years of experience, has taken up the challenge of leading anextremely efficient and capable staff in providing a fulfilling and enjoyable environmentat the Roundhouse. In addition, under the capable and friendly coordination of MicheleMateus, a host of enthusiastic volunteers help to enhance the centre and its programs.Over the coming season, we hope to continue to seek your advice and suggestionsas we proceed to improve our services and facilities for you. The Roundhouse is yourCommunity Arts and Recreation Centre, and it is a privilege to be part of the team thatmakes it happen.Michael NoonPresident, Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation AssociationBest Community Centre — three years in a row!For the third year in a row (2010 -2012), the Roundhouse Community Arts & RecreationCentre was voted Best Community Centre in the Georgia Straight's annual Best ofVancouver issue. This mix has proven tobe a good fit for this neighborhood. The Roundhouse believes in providing a child- andyouth-friendly community environment. Many of our youth programs are subsidized, free or low-cost. These programs are primarily staffed by qualified youth workers andcommunity artists. Youth work differs from other leisure-time opportunities because ofits specific intention to create a setting in which young people can learn and develop. The aim of youth work is to encourage young people to understand and act on thepersonal, social, intellectual, political, moral, emotional and physical issues which affecttheir lives, the lives of others, and the community of which they are a part. Our youth programs range from recreation-based free drop-ins/open gym (Thursday,Friday) to arts programs (Hip Hop culture program) to programs targeting marginalizedyouth (Street Youth Arts Drop-in, sports activities for youth with concurrent disorders—partnershipprogram with VCH etc.). We also offer low-cost programs suchas skateboarding and skimboarding and special events for youth. Youth have input intothe program design, as do our partners and other community stakeholders. Our programschange to reflect the interest of youth. New ideas are always welcome. Art inStanley ParkWild New TerritoriesJanuary – AprilCoal Harbour seawall into Stanley Parkwww.vancouver.caWild New Territories is an extraordinary public art exhibition that explores the relationshipbetween the urban and the wild. Between January and April, work by internationallyrenowned artists will be exhibited outdoors along the Coal Harbour seawalland into Stanley Park. The exhibition looks at the complex interconnectedness of livingthings, linking cultural and environmental ecologies and questioning our assumptionsabout wild spaces in urban environments. Locating art in some of the world’s mostcreative urban natural habitats, this exhibition enters “wild new territories,” bothphysically and metaphorically, generating new ideas about culture and nature.Curated by Vancouver artists Kathy Kenny and Ron den Daas, the exhibition will occupygallery spaces as well as outdoor spaces in restored or protected wild lands in London,Berlin and Vancouver. Artwork will be exhibited outdoors all along the seawall and inthe park, and in addition Coal Harbour Community Centre is pleased to host work byCanadian First Nations artist Dana Claxton on the outside of their building, and a videowork by Vancouver artist Glenn Lewis in their lobby.
